A disaster or tragedy is unexpected and often brings out strong emotions. The Disaster Distress Helpline 1-800-985-5990 can provide immediate counseling to anyone who needs help in dealing with the tragedy that occurred at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado.

The Helpline is a 24 hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week resource that responds to people who need crisis counseling after experiencing a natural or man-made disaster or tragedy.

Sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Helpline immediately connects callers to trained and caring professionals from the closest crisis counseling center in the nationwide network of centers. The Helpline staff will provide confidential counseling, referrals and other needed support services.

“When disaster strikes, people react with increased anxiety, worry and anger. With community and family support, most of us bounce back. Some may need extra assistance to cope with unfolding events and uncertainties,” said SAMHSA Administrator Pamela S. Hyde. “People seeking emotional help in the aftermath of a disaster can now call 1-800-985-5990 or text TalkWithUs to 66746 and begin the process of recovery.”

The Disaster Distress Helpline is the nation’s first permanent hotline dedicated to providing disaster crisis counseling. The toll-free Helpline is confidential and multilingual and available for those who are experiencing psychological distress as a result of natural or man-made disasters, incidents of mass violence or any other tragedy affecting America's communities. The Helpline complements the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other disaster response capacities, and is available immediately anywhere within the United States.

The helpline can also be accessed at http://disasterdistress.samhsa.gov/. <hr> SAMHSA is a public health agency within the Department of Health and Human Services. Its mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s communities.

Kindness and Compassion is not gone in these tough times.

In the Aurora Theater the Men Protected the Women. What Does that Mean?
By Hanna Rosin | Posted Monday, July 23, 2012, at 10:57 AM ET

A woman listens as the names of the 12 shooting victims at the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colo., are read aloud during a prayer vigil on Sunday.

In the movies the Dark Knight does not always save his lady, but in the Aurora theater the story unfolded differently. The male instinct to rescue and protect kicked in the way it does in less complicated superhero tales.

At least three of the 12 victims of the shooting died because they were physically protecting the women they came to the movie with.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Police responded to a 911 call at a Sikh Temple at around 10:30. Police officer shot multiple times, (in surgery should be ok), returned fire and shooter shot dead. Up to 100 people trapped inside with possible multiple shooters. Witnesses are reporting a coordinated attack by multiple shooters. Police have swept the building and have found 6 other bodies, but no other gunmen. 3 are in hospital including police officer, all in critical condition.
Police do not at this stage believe that there is a second shooter, but searching is continuing.

Re: A Very Sad Day in the United States

Apparently the leader of the temple lost his life protecting others.

In this carnage we are seeing the best in humanity. The sacrifice of one's own life for others.

It appears the shooter may have mental problems.

(AP) MONTREAL — A masked gunman opened fire during a midnight victory rally for Quebec's new premier, killing one person and wounding another. The new premier, Pauline Marois, of the separatist Parti Quebecois, was whisked off the stage by guards while giving her speech, and was uninjured.

The gunman then fled outside, where he set a small fire before he was captured, police said.

Police said they didn't know the gunman's motive. As the suspect was being dragged toward the police cruiser, he was heard shouting in French, "The English are waking up!"

The suspect, a heavyset, bespectacled man, wore a balaclava, shorts and what appeared to be a bathrobe.

In each of these tragedies people exhibited extreme bravery.

In the Colorado theater shooting, the men protected women with their bodies and were hit by the bullets. In the Sihk temple shooting the leader was killed protecting others.

And now in Montreal 2 men stopped a heavily armed man from entering the main hall where the newly elected premier of Quebec was speaking. Can you imagine confronting a man who has a machine gun? What kind of people do this? Selfless humanitarians. A heroes.

In these heroes lies the hope for all of us.
