A Very Sad Day in North America

Re: A Very Sad Day in North America

Dec. 14, 15:12 ET: Robert Licata told the AP his son aged just 6 was in class when the gunman burst in and shot the teacher. "That's when my son grabbed a bunch of his friends and ran out the door," he said. The shooter didn't say a word, Licata added.
Dec. 14, 15:09 ET: Flags on Capitol Hill have been ordered to be flown at half staff through sunset on December 18.
Dec. 14, 15:00 ET: SIG and Glock pistols were found at Sandy Hook Elementary School, while a Bushmaster rifle was found in the suspect's vehicle, law enforcement officials tell WCBS-TV.

The report Treyfish was referring to above:

http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/12/14/shooting-reported-at-connecticut-elementary-school/?hpt=hp_t1

Updated at 3:22 p.m. ET It appears that another member of the alleged shooter's family is dead. A senior law enforcement official familiar with the investigation says a brother of the alleged shooter was found dead in a home searched in Hoboken, New Jersey. We already knew Ryan Lanza's mother was found dead in the elementary school.

Re: A Very Sad Day in North America

this story is changing rapidly

This is, unfortunately, the "fog of war". Information is not always reported accurately. We've seen that with H5N1 and coronavirus cases here at FT.

Journalists need to take care not to report people who are alive as dead, nor to report innocent people as suspect. I have personally deleted one of my posts in this thread because I felt the information in it was not accurate or reliable. Huffington Post has incorrectly posted what it believes as the Facebook profile of Ryan Lanza, and had to retract it because it was the wrong person.

CNN television is holding a news conference reporting a deceased adult at a secondary crime scene in Newtown, CT (which could or could not be the same reports as coming out of NJ).

And all of the sources are "major" media outlets.

As posted earlier we suggest people use many sources for news so that the reports can be compared.

Twenty children and six adults pronounced dead at school, area, Connecticut police say

Re: A Very Sad Day in North America

The man identified in media reports Friday as the shooter in the deadliest school shooting in American history has told friends that he thinks his developmentally disabled brother may have committed the crime, Patch has learned.

A close friend of Ryan Lanza who would not be identified told Patch that he spoke to Lanza as Lanza made his way home from work to Hoboken. Lanza also took to his Facebook page to rail against CNN naming him as the suspect in the shooting in Newtown, Conn.

?I?m on the bus home now, it wasn?t me,? Lanza wrote.

Lanza?s mother, Nancy, a school teacher, is believed to be among the dead. More than 30 individuals, including 18 students, are believed to have died in the mass shooting.

Patch was among the media outlets to highlight and link to reports naming Lanza as the alleged shooter. Police haven't yet officially confirmed the identity of the gunman.

27 Killed in Connecticut Shooting, Including 20 Children</NYT_HEADLINE>

A gunman killed 26 people, 20 of them children between the ages of 5 and 10, in a shooting on Friday morning at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., about 65 miles northeast of New York City, the authorities said.

The gunman, who was believed to be in his 20s, walked into a classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School where his mother was a teacher. He shot and killed her and then shot 20 students, most in the same classroom. He also shot five other adults, and then killed himself inside the school.
...
?The majority of those who died today were children, beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old,? a visibly distraught President Obama said during a nationally televised address.

After pausing to compose himself for perhaps five long seconds, Mr. Obama said, ?They had their entire lives ahead of them: birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own.'?
