Re: 6.3 and 5.6 Earthquakes Hit ChristChurch New Zealand February 21 2011 - Heavy Damage - Deaths

According to GNS Science, four factors caused the intense shaking from the Port Hills fault earthquake; the energy released in the fault's rupture, the direction it was released, the "trampoline effect" between layers of sediment and the proximity of the fault to the city. More here

In trying to understand this "trampoline" effect, this Wikipedia information on wave types was helpful - but I haven't quite figured out the trampoline yet. There are body & surface waves, further divided into "P" wave, "S" waves, Raleigh waves and Love waves! Given that "P" waves velocity is slowed by about 2/3 in water, but the "S" wave (always slower) maintains its speed in water, I can see how the "S" would catch up with the "P" - but I'm not sure if that's the trampoline.

Earthquakes ruptures aren't always what we'd expect, i.e., equidistant from epicenter. The Nov. 3, 2002 Denali fault 7.9 quake was preceeded by a nearby 6.7 quake and the resultant large quake ruptured only in a direction away from the first quake - all 200 miles of the rupture. Had it been equidistant there would have been considerable damage to a large resort area. That quake rupture crossed a pipeline carrying 17% of domestic US oil supply, but because it was sitting on "sliding" supports, there was no damage.

more

Seismologist Dr Bill Fry said a recently discovered physical phenomenon called "slapdown" caused the trampoline-like effect felt by residents as violent upward jolting.

Layers of sediments under the city had separated during the quake, with weak top layers bouncing higher than stronger ones below them. When the top layer fell back and hit the next layer, they slapped and caused the high impacts felt, he said.

Dr Fry says the trampoline effect is evident when loosely connected layers of rock are subjected to lots of vertical movement.
He says it is similar to what happens when a person bouncing up and down on a trampoline gets out of rhythm, with their joints receiving an impact if they land as the trampoline is moving upwards.

Re: 6.3 and 5.6 Earthquakes Hit ChristChurch New Zealand February 21 2011 - Heavy Damage - Deaths

I'm trying to imagine something like a lemon meringue pie or pudding with whip cream on top. I could try hitting it and see if the lighter layers separate and "slap" the lower layer.

Now I have an excuse to make pudding with whip cream on top!!!

Maybe a better example would be cake with jello on top.

The Port Hills/Lyttleton/Banks Peninsular are the remains of ancient volcanoes. The cone extends down and out towards the mountains in the West. Gravel is from the mountains. The gravels now lie in a big plain (Canterbury Plains) and cover the lower part on the volcanoes sides. Creating hard volcanic rock with deep gravel over it.

"As the waves are travelling, they come up and they come down, and they were coming down faster than gravity can come down. And so the loose soil on the top doesn't have any coherency, [it] can't come down with the rock, and so the rock comes again and punctures it and causes very, very severe shaking," said Caroline Ashton from GNS Science.

Christchurch residents warned of exploding toilets

.... With sewerage and drainage systems clogged with silt, City Care staff have been using high pressure water hoses to clear the drains, but sometimes that can cause a blow back.

?It?s a pocket of air that is trapped in the lateral lines and when they?re jetting the high pressure unit is actually travelling up the main sewer and the lateral gets pressurized, and if threes an air pocket there?s potential that it might just blow through the toilet,? says Peter Harper, City Care manager.

Mr Harper says he knows of 25 toilet blowbacks but he says residents can take precautions.

?Basically keeping the toilet seat down and where possible we are notifying that we are in the area undertaking these type of operations,? he says.....

Our sewerage system is broken. As a precaution we have put plastic wrap over the toilet, put the seat and lid down, put a brick on it and turned off the water to the cistern.

We have fresh water but have to boil it or add bleach.

Grey water is going into the back garden.

It is estimated it will take 3-4 months to clear the silt from the sewers. That does not include repairing the sewers.

Water has been restored to most households. The water network map (pdf 149 kB) shows (in green) which areas have had water restored.

Electricity: Almost all properties outside the CBD are now connected.

Important messages for consumers
:

? We request customers outside the CBD (outside the four avenues) who remain
without power to call us on 03 363 9898 to ensure that we have you in our system. If
your power is off and your neighbour?s is on, please call us.
? If your power has been disconnected because your house is damaged, please talk to
your electrician to see what your options are.

Conserve Power
? Customers in the southern and eastern suburbs ? this includes Sydenham,
St Martins, Waltham, Opawa, Huntsbury, Beckenham, Somerfield, Cashmere,
Hoon Hay, Bexley, Bromley, Aranui, Avonside, Burwood, Shirley, New Brighton and
from Mt Pleasant to Sumner:
o Please use as little electricity as you can.
The capacity of the power network is extremely limited in the southern and eastern suburbs.
o Turn off unnecessary appliances such as heaters, air conditioning units, clothes
dryers and heated towel rails, and keep lights to a minimum.
o Use appliances like ovens, stove tops, jugs and toasters sparingly.

? If you do not have the power back on yet, turn the power off at the main switch,
unplug all appliances at the wall and make sure the stove is turned off and nothing is
on the stove top. This reduces the risk of fire when the power is restored.
? If you have any concerns about the state of your house or building leave the power
off at the mains until it has been inspected by an electrician.

Re: 6.3 and 5.6 Earthquakes Hit ChristChurch New Zealand February 21 2011 - Heavy Damage - Deaths

It seems like this earthquake was much more recent than one month to me. There is an overview of the situation here.

http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/christchurch-still-reeling-one-month-4076207

It says a state of national emergency remains in place.

Still it's very impressive that so many homes have power. Sounds like a much longer wait for the sewer systems. That and the water boiling sound tough.

I wish there were just a short warning so people could get out of or away from certain hazards and get to high ground if there is a tsunami danger.

There are some Greek scientists doing research on prediction who were interested in your earthquakes.

http://arxiv.org/abs/1102.4778v3

There's a link to their website and they have an announcement inviting others in the science community to launch similar projects.

Orion: Please conserve power.

The network in the Eastern and Southern suburbs is fragile and capacity to supply power is limited at this time.

Your efforts to use less power in these areas will help keep the power on.

Where possible, avoid turning on more than one or two appliances at once - eg use your toaster then your stove element, not both at once.

OK to use sparingly

Fridge/freezer (open only when necessary)

Jug to boil water

Microwave

Lighting: Turn off when not in room

If you have an electric hot water heating, save power by having short showers and using cold washes on your washing machine.

TV/radio for news updates and relaxation (one TV only - avoid home theatre systems)

Computer

Toaster

Slow cooker

Use if absolutely necessary

Stove elements (if you can, use these outside the 5 to 7 dinnertime period)

Air conditioning/heat pump for heating

Electric heaters

Oven

Hair dryers

Clothes dryer

Do NOT Use - or TURN OFF

Air conditioning for cooling

Beer fridge

Dishwasher: hand wash dishes instead of using a dishwasher.

Hot wash on washing machine

Heated towel rail

Spa pool

Water blaster

Re: 6.3 and 5.6 Earthquakes Hit Christchurch New Zealand February 21 2011 - Heavy Damage - Deaths

Following the February 22, Christchurch earthquake hundreds of cats and dogs ran in fright and while many have returned home, some are still missing.

According to the Canterbury SPCA over 80 percent of animals that are micro chipped are successfully returned to their owners.

?It?s a no brainer. If you want to maximise your chances of being reunited with your pet during or after a disaster or at any time, you must get your pet micro chipped,? says Canterbury SPCA chairman and veterinarian Dr Ross Blanks.

?Every animal chipped is a potential animal welfare issue averted.?

It is with this in mind that Canterbury SPCA has formed a partnership with The New Zealand Companion Animal Council (NZCAR), and the New Zealand Veterinary Association to offer free micro chipping for pets in Christchurch for a limited time.

?We?ve teamed up with a number of Christchurch veterinary clinics to offer Christchurch pet owners our Chip your Pet for Free campaign starting on Monday, March 21 and running until the 25 April or when stocks run out,? says Mr Blanks.
