Christchurch earthquake - 154 now confirmed dead

1 March, 2011 - 05:42

The death toll in the Christchurch earthquake has now risen to 154 and is expected to increase further.

A four-strong DVI team from Queensland has now arrived in New Zealand to further bolster the numbers of people working to help identify those who have died. There are now more than 170 people involved in this phase of the operation.

Meanwhile police from New Zealand and Australia continue to patrol the Christchurch area and overnight have made 10 arrests. None of the arrests were earthquake related and it is pleasing to note that there have been no breaches of the cordon.

Police are receiving increasing reports of people entering buildings which have been declared unsafe and bear a red sticker.

"These buildings have a red sticker because they are dangerous and could collapse at any time," said Supt Russell Gibson. "Under the Civil Defence Act, Police people have the power to remove people by force if necessary but we would prefer common sense to prevail.

"We are also very aware of a growing frustration by people who have cars within the CBD they want to retrieve, and businesses that they want to check on. We understand these frustrations but the CBD is still fraught with danger and any access has to be controlled. At this stage our focus has to remain on the rescue operation."

Glad to hear JC Roehl is safe :applause: though I hope he can find shelter with power and water soon.

Some unusual news was reported by the NZ Herald about a time capsule being found today by rescue workers in Christchurch. The earthquake unearthed the capsule when a statue of one of the city's pioneers was toppled. It may date back to 1867.

Number of confirmed dead remains unchanged

1 March, 2011 - 11:51

Three bodies were recovered from the PGC building overnight while the number of confirmed dead remains unchanged at 154.

Police expect the number of confirmed dead to increase in the days ahead.

A controlled felling took place this morning at the top of the PGC building due to safety concerns around the stability of the structure.

Canterbury District Commander, Superintendent Dave Cliff, said there were no earthquake-related arrests overnight and Police appreciate the cooperation of local residents.

Following the partial evacuation of Sumner yesterday, all but 20 of 200 properties were able to be reoccupied overnight.

Geological experts have advised there has been no movement of the ground in the Clifton Hill area since Thursday.

Police cordons were lifted in Sumner about 7.30pm with the exception of the Main Rd cordon which was lifted around 9pm.

Today at least 80 officers from both Australia and New Zealand are patrolling the suburbs in and around Christchurch and Lyttelton.

Superintendent Cliff said Police want people to feel safe as they start putting their lives back together.

NZ marks 2 minutes silence for quake victims

Tue, 01 Mar 2011 1:06p.m.

Search and rescue workers in quake-torn Christchurch downed their tools and joined the rest of New Zealand in standing in silence for two minutes as a mark of respect for those who died in the earthquake.

Prime Minister John Key, who had called for the national period of silence, marked it at the Christchurch Arts Centre.

The silence began at 12.51pm, one week after the 6.3 magnitude quake struck. In Australia the Parliament also observed silence for the quake victims.

Church bells in many centres throughout the country tolled before fading away before the silent tribute.

The death toll stands at 154, with police expecting to reach about 240.

Urban search and rescue (USAR) teams from New Zealand and abroad gathered at the Arts Centre to stand with Mr Key, his wife Bronagh, and Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker.

For 10 minutes after the silence, the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul near Parliament rang its bells in a half-muffled peal to acknowledge those who lost their lives.

Another quake shakes New Zealand

Wellington, March 1 (PL) An earthquake measuring 4.6 degrees on the Richter scale shook the area of the city of Christchurch, where the confirmed death toll from an earlier quake reached 155.

The shock, the greater of the continuing aftershocks from last week, was located five kilometers deep and 10 from the city, the second biggest with about 400 000 inhabitants.

The authorities reported no damage or casualties this time but stated that the total should exceed the 240 to the number of missing persons and the lack of signs of survivors despite intensive search efforts.

According to recent reports, the task of rescue and reconstruction is very difficult not only by repeated aftershocks of 6.3 magnitude earthquake last Tuesday but because of the destruction to buildings.

Downtown Christchurch is destroyed and many buildings are in danger of collapse while the brigades of national and of China, the United States and Britain continue their work.

Shortly before the new earthquake, Prime Minister John Key presided over a memorial to the victims, and announced a program to help the nearly 50 000 homeless.

So far the number of losses in official media and insurance companies is estimated at between 15 and 20 billion dollars, something unprecedented in the history of New Zealand.

This country, formed by a group of islands, is annually affected by some 14 000 small magnitude earthquakes and is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, the world's most vulnerable region in earthquakes.

Levy and Ingela, both from Rehovot, were 22 years and came to New Zealand in December to work in a vineyard located near where the quake struck. The quake also killed Ofer Mizrahi, 23, of Kibbutz Magal.

An Israeli forensics team had arrived a few days ago to New Zealand to help identify victims. (Aurora)

* We appreciate you if you will kindly forward this letter to the persons who helped the researchers who visited New Zealand on behalf of the Japanese Federation of the Deaf in January 2011.

February 24, 2011
We express our deepest sympathy to the persons and their families who were involved in the earthquake in Christchurch and its neighboring area, and we pay our greatest respect to the people taking a prompt action for the disaster relief- the personnel of the government of New Zealand, relief parties sent from the government of other countries and non-government organizations.
We are also being seriously concerned about the situation of the deaf people and sign language interpreters who were affected by the earthquake and/or currently taking shelter away from their residence.
Japan experienced the 1995 South Hyogo Prefectural Earthquake, which struck the entire nation by its devastating damage and the loss of 6,434 lives. Another big earthquake hit the offshore of Noto Peninsula in March, 2007, and left tremendous damages in the area. We recognize the suffering of your country as our own affair, through our experience of the frequent earthquake and natural disasters.
We keep gathering the information on the ongoing situation and affects of the earthquake, and we wish to be your help to relieve the concern and anxiety of the deaf people in New Zealand. We will be ready to set up the supports they need.

Emotional family visit to CBD

2 March, 2011 - 17:19

Around 400 family members of the people missing in the Christchurch earthquake were taken into the city's CBD by Police today.

A convoy of 10 buses transported the families through the inner city, giving them an opportunity to see firsthand the damage caused by last Tuesday's magnitude 6.3 quake. About 250 foreign nationals and 150 New Zealanders were on board the buses.

Inspector Wendy Robilliard from the Police Family Liaison Team says the trip was emotional, especially as the buses travelled past the CTV and PGC buildings.

"There were large outpourings of grief near those affected buildings," she says.

Police believed it was important to take the families to the CBD so they could see for themselves the magnitude of the devastation.

"I certainly believe it gave them a far better understanding of the conditions USAR staff are dealing with and why the rescue effort is taking time.

"They were very grateful to be taken through and several people came up to me afterwards to say how appreciative they were of the opportunity."

The windy, dusty and dangerous conditions meant the families did not get off the buses or lay flowers.

"It wasn't an option given the conditions and once they saw what it was like, they completely understood," Wendy says.

A Christchurch-based police officer was on board each bus to provide the families with a commentary as they travelled through the CBD.

Also on board were two or three Police Family Liaison Officers and staff from Victim Support...

Rescue operation disrupted by high winds

2 March, 2011 - 18:13

The death toll rose to 160 today, as rescuers struggled to work against strong winds.

Superintendent Dave Cliff said high winds created a dust hazard, decreased visibility and also made some sites unstable.

"Some teams have had to be withdrawn from sites until conditions improve. They will be reinstated as soon as it is safe for them to continue," he said.

"The central city remains a highly unstable environment, the wind is not improving matters and we continue to stringently enforce the cordons."

A small number of residents had to be re-evacuated in Redcliffs after they moved back into their homes despite a cordon being in place.

Mr Cliff said plans were under way for staged access for people who needed to get inside the cordon in the city and to get people back into their homes, but people still needed to be patient.

He said people also still needed to keep travel to minimum to keep traffic down.

"We are doing all that we can to get things to a point where people can get access to their homes and businesses - please continue to bear with us."

Ofer Levy, 22, and his 23-year-old friend Gabi Ingel, both from Israel, were killed in last Tuesday's quake, police said this morning.

Seven further victims have been identified but their names will not be released until all families have been notified.
