Two young Albertans are in hospital after being pulled from the rubble from a building demolished by an earthquake earlier this week in New Zealand.

Chris Benoit confirmed Thursday that his daughter Jenna, 21, and her boyfriend, Patrick Lee from Kitscoty, were in Christchurch this week and had checked into lodgings a couple of hours before the quake hit.
...

?She's got several fractures and a broken foot and can't see out of her left eye,? he added. ?I'm not getting this from the doctors and such but she's in pretty rough shape.?

New Zealand authorities estimate that there are victims from some 20 countries[/B
]02.25.2011 / 11:20 h
Sydney (Australia) .- New Zealand officials estimated today that there are victims of a dozen different nationalities among the 113 corpses have been recovered and more than 200 people missing after the earthquake that struck the city of Christchurch, on Tuesday .

The Police Chief, Dave Cliff, said his department kept in touch with diplomats and embassy staff had reported that they did not know the whereabouts of their citizens, who supposedly were in the city.

"I believe that this tragedy could include people from twenty nationalities," said police official at the state broadcaster Television New Zealand, without specifying the countries of origin.

For his part, Foreign Minister, Murray McCully, said he was confident that within two days the authorities have enough information to confirm the identity of some of the presumed victims are foreigners.

"I made phone calls to other ministers and ambassadors to prepare for bad news," said the head of Foreign Affairs.

So far, authorities have revealed the identities of six of the fatalities caused by the earthquake, all of New Zealand citizenship and including two babies, one of five months and another nine months.

In the official list of 228 missing persons are at least 46 students and teachers in a center for the teaching of English is located on the third floor of the building that housed the headquarters of Canterbury television channel, known for CTV and collapsed because of shaking.

In that school, called King's Education College Ingl?s, students were studying in Japan, Thailand, Philippines, South Korea, China and other nations that neither management nor the authorities have confirmed.

The experts ruled out that there are people alive under the rubble of the CTV building, which firefighters have been taken since last Tuesday, at least 47 bodies, while authorities believe another 120 remain buried.

The Chief of Urban Search and Rescue, Jim Stuart, said Thursday night the teams drew five other fatalities in the wrecked buildings, most located in central Christchurch, which is in effect a curfew .

Stuart said that during the past two days, the teams have not detected any signs of life during the checks, but said the search will continue.

"We have checked and about 90 percent of downtown," he told reporters coordinator of operations involving about 750 specialists, including about 350 sent from Japan, China, Singapore, Australia, United States and the United Kingdom.

In search tasks, which are now focusing on the ruins of Sumer and Leyttelton buildings, firefighters used a score of trained dogs, acoustic sensors and precision machinery.

Government declared a state of emergency Wednesday after the prime minister said in a televised address that the quake had caused "death and destruction on an unimaginable scale."

Last September, an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude hit Christchurch and caused dozens of injuries and extensive damage to public infrastructure and buildings in the south.

New Zealand records about 14,000 earthquakes each year, from 20 percent meet or exceed 5 degrees on the Richter scale.

In 1968, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake killed three people on the west coast of South Island, but the most serious was the incident in 1931 in the city of Napier on the North Island, where 256 people lost their lives. EFE aus / mfr / wm

A New Zealand-based geologist believes the strength of the earthquake, which left much of Christchurch in rubble on Tuesday, may have been magnified as it reflected off hard volcanic rock below its epicentre.

Murray McCully

25 February, 2011
Media update: International assistance received

Minister of Foreign Affairs Murray McCully today welcomed specialist personnel from China who arrived in New Zealand this morning to strengthen the rescue and recovery operation following the devastating earthquake.

"We are very grateful for the contribution provided by our friends from China, the US, and the UK who have arrived in the past 12 hours. Each will provide a valuable boost to the efforts by New Zealand and international rescue workers in Christchurch," says Mr McCully.

This will bring the total international search and rescue personnel in New Zealand to over 350 from seven international contributors.

"The Government continues to receive generous offers of specialist assistance from our international partners. These offers are under constant assessment based on the needs on the ground," says Mr McCully.

Arrived late yesterday:
  • From Australia: A 75-bed medical field hospital arrived in Christchurch at 3:20pm on 24 February on a RAAF C17 and is established at Cowles Stadium in the southeast of the city. This is an in-patient facility and will draw on New Zealand and Australian medical personnel already on the ground.
323 Australian police have been requested by NZ police to help with security cordon work. At midnight 24 February an advance party of three Australian police arrived in Wellington and were assigned NZ Police liaison officers then transferred to Christchurch today.
  • From Singapore: A urban search and rescue team of 55 personnel including four dogs arrived in Christchurch on 24 February and has begun work.
Arrived this morning:
  • From USA: An urban search and rescue team of 80 personnel plus 40 tonnes of equipment arrived at 2:20am in Christchurch and has set up base in Latimer Square.
  • From the UK: The first party of a 55-strong urban search and rescue team has arrived and the remainder is due to arrive at 12:20pm today. This team will establish its base in Latimer Square.

More help available in Christchurch

As at 10am, 4,000 people affected by the Christchurch earthquake have received financial assistance says Social Development Minister Paula Bennett.

In the last three days around $700,000 has been paid out in Civil Defence payments for essential items such as food, clothing and bedding.

?Christchurch people in genuine need, regardless of income, should call the Government helpline to access these payments? says Ms Bennett.

Civil Defence payments can also be made at the five Work and Income sites open at Ashburton, Hornby, Rangioa, Kaiapoi and Riccarton.
With the addition of the Rolleston Community Centre (94 Rolleston Drive) there are now five welfare centres open to help people in and around Christchurch.

The other four have been operating at Burnside High School, Cowles Stadium, Pioneer Stadium and Rangiora Baptist Church.

?Of the five welfare centres Rolleston has the best facilities and is able to provide people with a warm shower and a hot meal,? says Ms Bennett.

?We have heard reports of people, especially elderly, playing down their own need in the belief that this is helping the community,? says Ms Bennett.

?Kiwis are a tough bunch, but this isn?t the time to be staunch. Plenty of help is available, so if you need a hand please don?t hesitate to ask,? says Ms Bennett.

All residents in Canterbury who need assistance are encouraged to either contact a Welfare Centre or call the Government Help Line on 0800 779 997.

Turkish citizen missing after New Zealand earthquake

25.02.2011 17:10

In the wake of Tuesday?s 6.3-magnitude earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, 266 people remain missing, including a Turkish citizen. Didem Yaman, a representative of Turkish think tank International Strategic Research Center, or USAK, has not yet been found, daily H?rriyet reported.

Yaman had been studying for a Ph.D. in New Zealand for five years.
The death count was recently raised to 113 in New Zealand?s second biggest city, Christchurch. New Zealand quake: The epicentre town

By Nick Bryant BBC News, Lyttelton, Christchurch

A huge boulder smashed through this bungalow in Lyttelton

The port of Lyttelton sits in a landscape of staggering beauty and from a distance looks deceptively tranquil.

But the town was the closest to the epicentre of Tuesday's quake.
Normally the port is reached from Christchurch by a tunnel that goes beneath the mountain range, but it has been closed to traffic all week because of damage from rockfalls.

Instead, we reached Lyttelton along the road that snakes through the valleys and follows the coastline of this beautiful natural harbour.

Cultural needs of victims being addressed

26 February, 2011 - 11:05

In the aftermath of the Christchurch Earthquake, Police and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade are working together to address the cultural needs of victims' families.

Police Maori, Pacific and Ethnic Services (MPES) have 10 staff liaising with families from several countries who have arrived in Christchurch to be with their loved ones who have died or gone missing in the earthquake.

MPES head Superintendent General Manager Wally Haumaha says his staff have connected with key foreign embassies and are working very closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) to provide support to the families.

Part of this support includes repatriation of the deceased back to the families and involves working with the different ethnic communities and religions.

"This ensures that cultural sensitivity is managed in terms of giving respect and dignity to the deceased as they are brought to the mortuary and then given back to the families."

As part of this process a blessing ceremony was held at the Burnham Military Camp mortuary yesterday, which involved DVI (Disaster Victim Identification) staff, and medical staff.

Mr Haumaha says the ceremony was a deeply moving experience for all those involved. These are people experienced in disaster management and felt supported in terms of their own spiritual well-being.

He says the reason for the ceremony was to show respect to the deceased and accord them the cultural respect before the mortuary procedures began.

As part of this process two padres will be staying at the mortuary with the deceased.

MPES and MFAT staff will also be speaking with different religious denominations to ensure the correct customs are adhered to in preparation for release of the deceased back to the families.

Death toll of 123 expected to climb

26 February, 2011 - 12:26

The official death toll from the Christchurch earthquake stands at 123 this morning and is expected to climb, says Canterbury District Commander, Superintendent Dave Cliff.

Disaster victim identification (DVI) teams from New Zealand and around the world continue to work through the rubble in earnest. Team members are working as fast as they can and to a world class standard, he says.

Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) teams are resuming work in the Cathedral today, after progress was halted yesterday due to falling masonry. Work is also continuing at the PGC and CTV buildings. Teams will also check other buildings in the CBD, including lifts.

Family Liaision Teams will hold two meetings today, one with local families and one with families from overseas. Families specifically asked Police to remind media that their privacy should be respected, said Mr Cliff.

Survivors recount scene at cafeteria

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand-- Japanese students who were rescued from the collapsed CTV Building housing the King's Education language school have recounted the scene at the cafeteria when the powerful earthquake hit Christchurch at lunchtime Tuesday....

....Shortly after some small tremors, the devastating earthquake struck the city at 12:51 p.m., smashing windows. The CTV Building went black and then collapsed.

Minami said he saw a wall falling in front of him and blocking his vision. And then, Okuda asked him: "I can't feel anything on my right leg. What about you?" according to Minami.
Kuroda, a 19-year-old resident of Oyabe, Toyama Prefecture, heard people around her breathing with difficulty. She said to Kakizawa who was complaining of pain, "Just try to breathe."......

Families say abandonment of search for survivors in quake-ravaged building too early

Efforts to rescue people from underneath the rubble of the quake-ravaged CTV building in Christchurch, New Zealand have been overtaken by work to clear the site and recover bodies, in spite of families' hope that survivors might still be found......

.......Officials' comments have sparked anger from anxious onlookers. One Chinese man whose friend was buried in the rubble said he wanted to believe the rescuers were doing their best but the decision to use heavy machinery came too quickly. He said he wanted heavy machinery workers to wait until the 72 hours had passed, even if there were no signs of survival.

A tearful woman standing nearby said it was heart-wrenching each time a crane created loud noises as it pulled away a piece of rubble.....

A Chinese recovery team works with members of the New Zealand Urban Search and Rescue to carry a body from the Canterbury TV site.

LATEST: The death toll from the Christchurch earthquake has risen to 145 and will continue to rise, police say.

District Commander Superintendent Dave Cliff said the number of people missing remained at over 200.

Each family of a dead person had been assigned a police officer to liaise with them, he said.

There had been two meetings with families today - one for international families and one for local families.

Cliff said people had been "very badly hurt" and visual identification by family members would consequently not work.

Wayne Mapp

26 February, 2011

Canterbury loading up with relief supplies

The Navy multi-role vessel HMNZS Canterbury will sail to Wellington from Lyttelton tomorrow to load up with disaster relief supplies for its namesake province.

Defence Minister Wayne Mapp said that Canterbury will arrive in Wellington at approximately 6pm on Sunday and after refuelling will embark a wide range of supplies and equipment for the earthquake recovery effort. The cargo list is expected to include:

a 28,000 litre fuel truck
29 4 x 4 vehicles
six 20? containers (including four refrigerated)
eight pallets of water and Telecom equipment
a front end loader.
an Army Bailey bridge.

Further items are expected before sailing time at 4am on Monday.

?Canterbury was in Lyttelton when the earthquake struck. Her crew have done a tremendous job there,? Dr Mapp said. ?In particular they have provided hundreds of meals to the community. I visited Lyttelton on Thursday and people spoke very highly of the support the ship has provided.

?The same can be said of all Defence Force personnel deployed to help in Canterbury. From the soldiers on the cordon, to the Army engineers who set up a desalination system yesterday, to the round the clock air support that the RNZAF has maintained, the services have done a first-class job.

?There is a long way to go for Canterbury but the Defence Force will be there, doing whatever it can to help,? he said.

HMNZS Otago and HMNZS Pukaki will continue the naval support role in Lyttelton while Canterbury is away.
