Col among 11 killed by dengue
17 September, 2011

LAHORE: The dengue virus on Friday claimed at least 11 more lives ? seven in the Punjab, including Lahore, three in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and one in Sindh ? while reports pouring in from Balochistan revealed the dangerous virus had reached that province also.

However, Punjab Parliamentary Secretary Dr Saeed Elahi claimed on Friday that only nine dengue patients had died in the Punjab. In the Punjab, the victims included Prof Lt-Col Tariq Mahmood, who was teaching at the Military College of Engineering, Risalpur. Five more dengue patients died in Lahore and 834 new patients were detected with dengue virus during the past 24 hours.

According to unofficial reports, so far the virus has claimed 39 lives in Lahore with over 10,000 cases of dengue positive since January 2011. Around 20 inmates of Kot Lakhpat and Camp jails have also been tested positive for the virus. The provincial government looks helpless in controlling the ever-growing virus as almost all public and private hospitals and laboratories have been receiving an overwhelming number of dengue suspects and confirmed cases on a daily basis.

Sri Lankan team disapproves media coverage of dengue
18 September, 2011

LAHORE: Members of the Sri Lankan medical team have praised the steps taken by the Punjab government to control the dengue virus but expressed surprise over the wide media coverage to the virus saying that it would create more of a scare among the people.

During a visit to Model Town here on Saturday, members of the Sri Lankan team said that dengue virus attack was more serious in Sri Lanka but their media did not give it so much coverage.

The members of the team said that 90% of the disease could be controlled with the cooperation of the people. Unless the people cooperate in the campaign, it would be difficult to overcome the problem. They said that people should take Paracetamol tablets and adopt preventive measures to ward off the disease. They said most of the deaths in Pakistan attributed to dengue fever were thoroughly checked by them and they took place due to heart attack or other diseases.

The medical team members advised the people to keep their localities clean and clear stagnant water to control the dengue mosquitoes.

End.

Three out of seven deaths in Lahore - Usman Qureshi alias Moon, 19, Bashir Masih, 42, and Roshan, 65 - occurred in Mayo Hospital, while two patients including Khalida, 35, and Rasheeda, 80, expired at the Services Hospital. Govt asks NIH not to compile dengue cases
ASMA KUNDI 5 hours ago |

ISLAMABAD - Instead of taking concrete steps to control dengue virus, the government has asked the National Institute of Health (NIH) to stop compiling dengue-related cases as more and more patients are visiting hospitals in panic, increasing pressure on them manifold.
NIH spokesperson Mazhar Nisar told Pakistan Today that after a policy decision, the NIH had stopped compiling dengue-related figures to avoid a panic-like situation.
He said people having normal fever rushed to hospitals, creating pressure on major hospitals.
An NIH official, wising not to be named, said how people would know if they were suffering from dengue fever, malaria or some other type of fever. Instead of creating awareness, the NIH has stopped compiling the figures, which will result in a disaster as sometimes people coming to hospitals with the complaints of normal fever are confirmed dengue-positive cases. However, if they do not rush to hospitals, it can be dangerous and casualties can increase.
