DHEC reports 22 more flu deaths, bringing total this season to 46 in South Carolina

The state health department reported Wednesday that another 22 South Carolinians have died from the flu this season and that hundreds more were recently hospitalized.
Numbers included in the new report offer clear evidence that flu activity has been widespread and rampant across the state this month. And it doesn't seem to be slowing down.
Seventeen of the latest flu-related deaths occurred between Jan. 14 and Jan. 20, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported. Five of those deaths were attributed to prior weeks. Since October, 46 people have died from the flu in this state.

Twenty-two new flu-related deaths were reported in South Carolina in the last week, the Department of Health and Environmental Control reports, showing a decline in deaths compared to previous weeks.
DHEC's latest reporting period runs from Jan. 28 to Feb. 3. Six of the 22 new cases the agency reported Wednesday occurred in weeks prior. Influenza's has killed 106 South Carolinians all-told this season.

A total of 128 South Carolinians have now died from flu this season, state health officials said Wednesday.
The virus continued to be widespread in the state for the ninth consecutive week, according to the state Department of Health and Environmental Protection.
Of the deaths, 46 were in the Upstate, and 41 were in the Midlands, 20 in the PeeDee and 21 in the Lowcountry, DHEC reports.

This flu season continues to inflict severe damage in South Carolina.
In the past week, the number of reported flu-related deaths has continued to rise, as 23 more deaths have been reported by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.
This flu season, a total of 151 influenza-associated deaths reported by DHEC, which said that South Carolina reported widespread activity this week. This is the 10th consecutive week at widespread activity.

Flu activity continued to decline in the last week, but experts at both the federal and state health agencies said influenza is still considered widespread.
There were 6,332 influenza cases reported in the state in all, less than half that of the previous week, according to a report from the Department of Health and Environmental Control.

A total of 70 influenza-associated hospitalizations were reported
by 45 hospitals. The cumulative hospitalization rate is 81.8 per
100,000. There were 34 laboratory-confirmed influenzaassociated
deaths reported; however, 26 deaths occurred in
previous weeks. The cumulative mortality rate is 4.1 per 100,000.
Compared to the previous week, the number of reported
hospitalizations decreased by 121 (63.4%) and number of
reported deaths decreased by 9 (52.9%). In the current flu
season, there have been 4,059 influenza-associated
hospitalizations and 201 influenza-associated deaths reported.

Compared to the previous week, the number of reported
hospitalizations decreased by 9 (11.0%) and number of
reported deaths decreased by 6 (60.0%). In the current flu
season, there have been 4,144 influenza-associated
hospitalizations and 221 influenza-associated deaths reported.

100,000. There were 7 laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated
deaths reported; however, 5 deaths occurred in previous weeks.
The cumulative mortality rate is 4.9 per 100,000. Compared to
the previous week, the number of reported hospitalizations
decreased by 9 (13.8%) and number of reported deaths
remained the same. In the current flu season, there have been
4,265 influenza-associated hospitalizations and 242 influenza associated
deaths reported.
