Lufkin doctor hospitalized with H1N1 while daughter takes care of family
While a Lufkin doctor, diagnosed with H1N1, remains in a medically induced coma at Methodist Hospital in Houston, his 19-year-old daughter is furiously working to spread word of the family?s needs and to encourage the public to get a flu vaccination.
Rebecca Gill, whose father is Dr. Christopher Gill, a cardiologist at the Heart Institute of East Texas, said the experience for her family which included her mother, Mariela, also being hospitalized with the flu and subsequently suffering a heart attack, began the day after Christmas.
?He was making his rounds and became nauseous,? Gill said. ?He went to the emergency room and they told him they thought he had an upper respiratory infection and sent him home with an antibiotic. My mom began to get sick the next day after caring for him.?
News story.

Robert Suder 49, died in his home on Jan. 11, one week after returning from a holiday visit to see his wife and kids in Arizona.
Suder, who was an optometrist at Visions Optical in Soldotna, returned to work for one day after the trip before calling in sick, said his mother Barbara Gunsolus.
According to an autopsy performed by the Alaska State Medical Examiners Office, released to the family, Suder tested positive for H1N1 influenza, which progressed to pneumonia. Gunsolus said Suder had complained of a sore throat and congestion and went to go see his doctor, who diagnosed him with bronchitis.
Three days later his mother found him dead at home in his bathroom.
?He was such a healthy person this all happened so fast,? she said.

Wayne Kodama, a beloved longtime Fresno dentist and founder of Healthy Smiles Mobile Dental Foundation, died last week from flu complications. He was 52.Dr. Kodama didn't get a flu shot, said his wife, Susan Kodama, who is now urging everyone to get one -- even those who consider themselves healthy, like her husband did."He never had a cold, he never had a flu, he was never sick," Susan said. "He never missed a day of work, never."Dr. Kodama had the flu for about three days before it turned into a bad cough, Susan said. He got treatment about a week later and was hospitalized for two weeks before he died Jan. 24. Doctors suspect his death was related to H3N5, a relatively new flu strain, Susan said.

No mention made of H3N5 previously? Let's hope the treating physicians have the courage to either directly correct the reporting error or provide their testing protocol.
