Riverside County health professionals have reported the county’s first probable Monkeypox case.
As of right now, the unidentified man under the age of 60 is somewhere in the eastern area of Riverside County. He was seen as an outpatient and did not require hospitalization.

More testing will take place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) laboratory to confirm whether it is Monkeypox, according to Dr. Geoffrey Leung, public health officer for Riverside County.

“We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the case to determine the best course of action moving forward,” said Leung. “Given that there have been other probable cases in the region it is not surprising that we would have one in Riverside County...

        MONKEYPOX
        ...

The current monkeypox situation is rapidly evolving and the information below will be updated as new information emerges. CDPH is closely monitoring monkeypox transmission in the U.S. and California to ensure rapid identification of cases. The risk of monkeypox to the public is currently very low based on the information available.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a health advisory on May 20, 2022 and June 14, 2022 regarding a confirmed case of monkeypox virus infection in Massachusetts as well as multiple clusters of monkeypox virus infections in other countries that do not usually have monkeypox cases. While monkeypox can infect anyone, many of the recent cases in 2022 have occurred among persons self-identifying as men who have sex with men (MSM).

Additionally, CDPH issued an updated advisory on May 27 and also issued an advisory on May 20 to health care providers to immediately notify their local health jurisdiction (LHJ) of any potential cases.

LA County confirms local transmission of monkeypox
          By Georgina Taylor
          June 25, 2022

Los Angeles County has confirmed local transmission of monkeypox, health officials said Friday, June 24, with some recently identified patients having no history of recent travel that might account for their infections — and some having attended large events that may have spread the illness.

There were 22 cases of monkeypox in the county, as of Friday, and health officials said some recent infections have occurred “among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men who attended large events where the exposure to monkeypox may have occurred.”

LA County health officials said they are working with organizers of the unspecified events to notify people of possible exposures...

            June 24, 2022

Public Health Confirms Community Transmission of Monkeypox in LA County; Details Vaccination Efforts

Public Health has confirmed local transmission of monkeypox in LA County, as some of the more recent of the 22 cases of monkeypox in LA County thus far have no history of international or out-of-state travel. There have been no hospitalizations or deaths.

Anyone can get and spread monkeypox, but some of the recent cases identified have been among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men who attended large events where the exposure to monkeypox may have occurred. Public Health is working with event organizers to notify attendees of potential exposure.

While supplies of monkeypox vaccine are limited, Public Health is offering the JYNNEOS vaccine in a targeted manner to reach individuals at higher risk of monkeypox. This includes people who are known close contacts to someone diagnosed with monkeypox and individuals who attended an event where they may have had skin-to-skin contact with someone who later tested positive for monkeypox virus. The vaccine is being used in these cases to reduce the risk of developing monkeypox.

As vaccine supply increases, Public Health will focus on making the monkeypox vaccine available for other high-risk groups in efforts to prevent widespread community transmission.

Monkeypox does not spread easily between people. The spread of monkeypox from person to person can occur through contact with body fluids, monkeypox sores, items that have been contaminated with fluids or sores (like clothing or linens), or through prolonged exposure to respiratory droplets. Because of this, transmission may also occur during sex through skin-to-skin and other intimate contact.

LA County encourages persons who experience symptoms consistent with monkeypox (such as characteristic rashes or lesions), persons who traveled to countries where monkeypox cases have been reported or persons who have had close contact, including sexual contact, with someone who has a similar rash or received a diagnosis of suspected or confirmed monkeypox, to contact their health care provider for a risk assessment. Those who do not have a regular provider should call 2-1-1 for assistance.

Monkeypox spreading locally at large LA County events, health officials say
              By Patrick Reilly
              June 25, 2022 9:20pm Updated

The number of confirmed monkeypox cases in Los Angeles County has jumped to 22, which health officials said has largely been spread among men who have sex with other men who have recently attended large events.

Most of the recent cases involve individuals who have not traveled out of the country or out of the state, as was the situation in most of the first identified cases in the US.

No hospitalizations or deaths have been reported, officials said.

“Anyone can get and spread monkeypox, but some of the recent cases identified have been among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men who attended large events where the exposure to monkeypox may have occurred,” the Los Angeles Department of Public Health said in a statement on Friday. “Public Health is working with event organizers to notify attendees of potential exposure.”...

Officials at a Palm Springs STI clinic says Riverside County public health is underprepared for a rise in Monkeypox cases after a patient there reported possible exposure to the virus.

Dr. Phyllis Ritchie, CEO and Founder of PS Test in Palm Springs, said a patient last Thursday reported receiving a notification from Los Angeles County health department that they had been possibly exposed to Monkeypox after attending an LA Pride event...

Over the July Fourth holiday weekend, one group that threw a party over San Francisco's Pride weekend attended primarily by gay men sent out an alert to party attendees about a plausible case of monkeypox among them. The Burning Man camp known as Comfort & Joy throws the annual Afterglow party on Pride weekend, and Afterglow attendees were informed Monday about the case.

Following that alert, another large party that occurred Friday of Pride weekend, Electroluxx, put out a message Tuesday on its social media informing attendees that one attendee has "self-reported having monkeypox."

As an outbreak of monkeypox infections grips the gay communities of Germany and the UK, there are increasing reports of cases here in the U.S. and in the Bay Area — also primarily among gay and bisexual men.

The Riverside County Department of Public Health has announced two more "probable" cases of monkeypox in the county.

The probable cases are both men, under the age of 60, who live in eastern Riverside County, according to department spokesperson Jose Arballo Jr.

On Tuesday, the county and the CDC confirmed its first case of monkeypox. The patient was also a man, under the age of 60, located in eastern Riverside County.

The first patient was treated at an Eisenhower facility, according to Lee Rice, Eisenhower Health spokesperson.

The county has a limited amount of monkeypox vaccines. It can only give the vaccine for the recommended use after exposure. The county is expecting a bigger supply but it doesn't know when it'll arrive. For now, county officials are working on creating a monkeypox dashboard similar to their COVID one that would be updated regularly...

Local health officials have detected two more probable cases of monkeypox in Sacramento County, the ninth and 10th infections since the county’s outbreak began in late May.

No additional information was immediately available regarding the two most recent cases. A data tracker from the county health on Monday showed the total increase from eight to 10.

The county health office announced the discovery of the first California monkeypox case May 24, in a resident who recently returned from international travel. Local officials sent the specimen to a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lab, which confirmed the sample as monkeypox.

Seven additional cases were then detected within a month: four identified via contact tracing linked to the first case, followed by three that were unrelated to the first five and whose cases were linked to domestic travel...

Monkeypox, a rare, viral disease that occurs mostly in central and western Africa but is gaining ground in the United States and elsewhere, has finally reached Sonoma County.

Three cases have been detected locally, said Dr. Kismet Baldwin, the county’s deputy health officer in charge of the local monkeypox response.

Baldwin said the county has confirmed three cases of the orthopox genus, which includes monkeypox. Local public health officials are to assume that detected cases of orthopox are in fact monkeypox until further testing is done...
