Sacramento monkeypox outbreak swells to 14 after county reports 6 cases in two days
By Michael McGough July 13, 2022 3:03 PM

Sacramento County has detected four new probable cases of monkeypox, officials said Wednesday, marking the 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th infections discovered since the outbreak began at the local level in late May.

Six of the 14 probable or confirmed cases have been disclosed in the past two days, with the county reporting two infections Tuesday.

The latest four cases are related to travel to other states within the U.S. and are not linked to other cases within the county, according to a Wednesday news release from the Sacramento County public health office.

“Contact tracing is on-going, risk to the general public remains low,” county health officials wrote...

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (FOX26 NEWS) — Monkeypox has reached Fresno County, the Fresno County Department of Public Health announced Monday.

The CDC and California Department of Public Health say they’ve seen an increase in reported cases recently.

Fresno County’s Interim Public Health Officer, Rais Vohra, says the risk of transmission is still considered low, but that he advises people to educate themselves on how the disease spreads so they can assess their own risk...

San Francisco monkeypox cases rise to 141, lines for vaccines reportedly hit 9 hours

                July 20, 2022

A monkeypox vaccine clinic at San Francisco General Hospital opened to long lines Wednesday morning and turned away many people, ABC7 reported.

The San Francisco Department of Public Health has requested 35,000 vaccines but only received 3,580 in an initial shipment and another 4,163 this week — “which will be used within days,” Mayor London Breed said in a letter she wrote to federal health officials and posted on Twitter on Wednesday morning.

Monkeypox cases are climbing in San Francisco, prompting state and local leaders to ask federal health officials for more vaccines to meet the growing demand from residents who want shots but are being turned away at clinics.

The number of monkeypox cases in the city has risen to 141, up from 86 cases just a few days ago. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 2,322 cases of the painful, but rarely fatal, viral disease, which most notably causes a rash. California has reported 356 cases since July 19, more than a third in San Francisco. In total, California has the second highest number of known cases in any state, after New York, the CDC said...

SAN FRANCISCO - As monkeypox cases continue to rise, San Francisco's Department of Public Health has noticed rates increasing at an alarming rate among the city's Latino population. The health department is working with community groups to warn Latinos and help them protect themselves.

The city is closely monitoring the spread of monkeypox. According to the latest data, from Friday, there are 197 confirmed cases. That data also shows a disturbing trend, that although Latino's make up just 15% of San Francisco's population, 30% of the city's monkeypox cases are among Latinos.

"We're building out efforts on our previous successes learned from diseases like COVID, and other STDs like syphilis, HIV," said Oscar Macias from San Francisco's Department of Public Health...

S.F. all but gives up on contact tracing for monkeypox

                        Aug. 8, 2022Updated: Aug. 8, 2022 9:32 p.m.

San Francisco has demanded more vaccines and treatment options for its escalating cases of monkeypox — but the city has all but abandoned a time-honored method of containing outbreaks: contact tracing.

U.S. health officials declared monkeypox a national health emergency last week, as did California and San Francisco city officials, and although it’s typically non-fatal, no one wants to become infected by the smallpox relative, with its painful lesions that can lead to scarring.

With 472 cases — 36% of the state’s 1,310 cases — city public health officials believe San Francisco has the nation’s highest per-capita rate.

A child from the western portion of Riverside County is the first pediatric case of monkeypox in the county, local health officials announced Friday.

The child, who is younger than 10, did not need to be hospitalized and is recovering at home. Public health officials were notified this week about the preliminary positive test result and are trying to determine how the child became infected.

... In California, seven people under the age of 16 have tested positive for monkeypox, according to the state public health department.
