    Ag officials confirm 18th bird flu infection this fall

    ​A highly transmissible avian influenza that is often fatal to domestic birds recently infected a small backyard flock in Mills County, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

    The mixed-species flock had about 11 birds. Infected flocks are culled to prevent the spread of the virus, which is often transmitted by wild, migrating birds.

    It was the 18th detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Iowa’s domestic bird flocks this fall. Those flocks collectively had nearly 3 million birds.

    That total was mostly driven by two large chicken egg-laying facilities that had more than a million birds apiece. Iowa is the nation’s leading egg-producing state.​..

      MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa (KWWL) -- A case of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) or "Bird Flu" has been confirmed in Mahaska County.

      Officials say that the affected site is in a backyard mixed species flock.

      Since October, there have now been at least 19 cases confirmed in Iowa.

      The CDC says that the recent cases do not pose a health risk for the public.​..

        Iowa officials confirm bird flu case in Mahaska County

        Both the state and federal departments of agriculture have confirmed a positive case of highly contagious bird flu in Mahaska County, officials said Tuesday afternoon.

        The affected site in the county was a mixed-species backyard flock, according to a news release from the Iowa Department of Agriculture. Officials said 27 birds were destroyed.

        There have been 51 commercial, backyard and mixed flocks infected with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, also known as bird flu, in Iowa since March 1, 2022...​
