    (Des Moines, IA) -- Another case of bird flu has been confirmed in Iowa. The Iowa Department of Agriculture says it was found in a commercial turkey flock in Buena Vista County, in northwest Iowa. It's the first new case of 2023. Last fall there were about a dozen outbreaks at commercial turkey or egg laying facilities, and in backyard flocks in the state. There were nearly 20-bird flu confirmations in Iowa in the spring of 2022...

      ...The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship along with USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirms a positive case of the virus in a northwest Iowa commercial turkey flock.

      The case in Buena Vista County is the first for Iowa since mid-March but there have been several detections of avian flu in neighboring states South Dakota and Minnesota since the beginning of the month.

        ​A commercial flock of about 50,000 turkeys in Buena Vista County was recently infected by a highly transmissible bird flu, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

        Highly pathogenic avian influenza was last detected in Iowa in March in a small flock in Chickasaw County. The virus has been relatively quiet in the state this year after wreaking having last year, when infections resulted in the culling of nearly 16 million birds.​..

          State officials have identified two more domestic bird flocks with highly pathogenic avian influenza, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

          The virus, which is very contagious and often deadly to birds that are raised for food, was recently confirmed in a commercial flock of about 47,500 turkeys in Pocahontas County and a backyard flock of about 50 birds in Guthrie County.

          The virus is transmitted by wild, migrating birds, and there have been a total of three flocks infected this fall in Iowa. The first was a flock of about 50,000 turkeys in Buena Vista County.​..

            Bird flu has struck a commercial turkey operation with about 30,000 birds in northwest Iowa's Buena Vista County, the Iowa Department of Agriculture reported Tuesday.

            It's the third northwest Iowa commercial turkey facility that's been infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza this fall: Two have been in Buena Vista County and the third in neighboring Pocahontas County. Altogether, about 127,500 turkeys have been destroyed to prevent the spread of the deadly disease.

            A fourth case was reported Oct. 23 in a backyard flock with about 50 birds in central Iowa's Guthrie County.
            Bird flu has hit a northwest Iowa turkey operation, the fourth outbreak this fall. Since disease emerged in March 2022 in Iowa, 16.05 million birds have been infected. The birds are destroyed to contain the spread of the deadly disease.​..

              Bird flu has hit four more poultry operations in Iowa with about 32,300 birds, the Iowa Department of Agriculture said Friday: A north-central commercial chicken breeding facility and three northwest game bird farms.

              Highly pathogenic avian influenza was detected at a Hamilton County breeding chicken facility with 15,000 birds. The three Clay County game bird farms that had 17,331 ducks and backyard birds. One farm had 7,340 ducks and 21 backyard birds of mixed species; the second farm had 1,700 ducks; and the third, 8,270 ducks.

              The birds were destroyed to prevent the spread of the deadly disease, which is carried by wild birds on their fall migration.

              The recent outbreaks push to eight the number of flocks hit in Iowa so far this fall.​..

                Bird flu found at three duck farms and a commercial chicken flock

                ​A highly transmissible avian influenza recently infected three Clay County duck farms and one chicken-breeding operation in Hamilton County, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

                The Clay County game bird farms have a total of about 17,300 ducks, and one of the sites also has a mixed-species backyard flock of 21 birds. IDALS declined to reveal whether the sites are related or are in close proximity.

                The Hamilton County flock has about 15,000 chickens.

                The virus — which is often transmitted by wild, migrating birds and is lethal for domestic flocks — has been confirmed at eight sites this fall in Iowa. Entire flocks are culled to help prevent the spread of the virus.

                Three of the previous virus detections this fall were in commercial turkey flocks in Buena Vista and Pocahontas counties. The fourth was a backyard flock in Guthrie County...

                  (Undated) -- A positive case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in Kossuth County, Iowa. The Iowa Department of Agriculture says the affected site is a farm with game bird pheasants, peafowl and commercial layer chickens. This makes the 9th case of bird flu this fall.

                  The other cases have been in Buena Vista, Guthrie, Pocahontas, Clay, and Hamilton counties...

                      An additional 1.2 million chickens will be slaughtered to prevent the spread of the bird flu after the virus was confirmed on an Iowa egg farm in the second massive case this week.

                      The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship announced the latest bird flu infection at a farm in Taylor County Friday, and Iowa's governor immediately declared a disaster there to make sure the state has the resources to respond quickly.

                      The Iowa case is just the latest one in the outbreak that began early last year and has prompted officials to kill a total of nearly 63 million birds. Earlier this week, 1 million chickens were killed on a Minnesota egg farm. But the vast majority of the cases, or nearly 58 million birds, occurred last year.​..

                        State and federal officials have announced confirmed cases of bird flu at four more sites in Iowa over the past three days, including one in the KMCH listening area.

                        On Friday, the virus was confirmed in a small flock of birds in Jones County.

                        A commercial operation in Taylor County was also identified, where one-point-two million chickens were laying eggs. On Saturday, a game bird hatchery in Kossuth County had been hit, along with a backyard flock of mixed species in Cerro Gordo County.​..

                          Both the state and federal departments of agriculture have confirmed a positive case of the highly contagious bird flu in Benton County, officials said Wednesday afternoon.

                          The affected site in the county was a mixed-species backyard flock, according to a news release from the Iowa Department of Agriculture. State officials confirmed two positive cases in Kossuth and Cerro Gordo counties last week.

                          There were 86 birds in the backyard flock, Don McDowell, a department spokesman, said.​..

                            SIOUX CENTER, Iowa (KTIV) - State and federal authorities have confirmed a case of bird flu in Sioux County in Northwest Iowa.

                            The case of bird flu, also known as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, was in a flock of commercial layer chickens, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the United States Department of Agriculture.

                            Due to this case, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation for Sioux County. The proclamation allows state resources from Iowa Homeland Security, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and other agencies to assist with tracking and monitoring, rapid detection, containment, disposal and disinfection.

                            Since the beginning of 2023, there have been 17 confirmed cases of bird flu in Iowa, with 15 of them being reported between Oct. 20 and Nov. 23. Some of the counties that have been affected include Buena Vista, Pocahontas and Clay Counties.​..

                              SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - State and federal authorities have confirmed two cases of bird flu in Woodbury County.

                              The cases of bird flu, also known as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, were both located in backyard mixed species flocks, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the United States Department of Agriculture. No other information about the cases has been released at this time.

                              These cases come just under a week after a case of bird flu in Sioux County resulted in a flock of 1.6 million birds being depopulated.​..
