      The national average price of eggs was 11.66 yuan/kg, a decrease of 0.7% from the previous week and a year-on-year increase of 9.6%. The price of eggs in 10 major producing provinces including Hebei and Liaoning was 10.59 yuan/kg, a decrease of 1.2% from the previous week and a year-on-year increase of 8.1%. The national average chicken price was 24.30 yuan/kg, down 0.1% from the previous week and up 7.7% year-on-year. The average price of commercial egg substitute chicks was 3.95 yuan per chick, a decrease of 0.3% from the previous week and a year-on-year increase of 8.2%. The average price of commercial broiler chicks was 4.14 yuan/piece, down 0.2% from the previous week and up 38.9% year-on-year.

    So why follow egg prices? It can be an indicator of a larger problem.

    For instance in the US, the USDA reports that egg prices are up 136% year-over-year in March. Well...the US has had a huge avian flu outbreak in poultry farms for a year. link

    The China government manipulates the food markets because they know that an unaffordable price range can destabilize their regime. So a report of a 9.6% increase in egg prices year-over-year should be read as "at least". For instance please see:
