The Ministry of Health of the Nation confirmed this Friday that there is community circulation of the so-called "monkey pox", with 133 cases distributed in five provinces and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.
The information was confirmed this Friday by the portfolio led by Minister Carla Vizzotti in the National Epidemiological Bulletin corresponding to epidemiological week 33 of this year.
Until August 24, 133 cases of people suffering from monkeypox were confirmed. Of the total confirmed cases, 38 had a history of travel outside the country prior to the onset of symptoms.
Of the 95 cases without a travel history, 71 have data that refer to sexual contact with travelers or strangers or close contact with a confirmed case.
The median age of the cases is 35 years with a minimum of 18 years and a maximum of 58 years.
71.4% of confirmed cases were diagnosed in the last four weeks.
99.9% of the cases corresponded to the legal male sex.
“To date, no serious cases or deaths from this cause have been reported,” the Ministry of Health of the Nation said in its report.
Of the 133 cases, 32 are in Buenos Aires; 91, in the Federal Capital; 1, in Mendoza, two in Río Negro; and 2 in Santa Fe.
Meanwhile, there are another 21 cases that are being analyzed in Buenos Aires, the Federal Capital and Neuquén.
The cases per epidemiological week show a gradual and sustained increase in confirmed cases from week 26 and a more pronounced increase from week 31, said Salud.
An awareness of surveillance can also be observed, especially in the increase in suspicion, particularly from week 31, added the health portfolio.
Most cases in the current outbreak have presented with mild symptoms of the disease, however, it can cause severe disease in certain risk groups (young children, pregnant people, and immunosuppressed people).
The cases were mainly characterized by the presence of vesicular exanthems, in several cases few lesions in different locations including genitals, perianal, hands, torso and face.
99.9% of the confirmed cases to date in Argentina have occurred in people of the legal male sex, with one case of legal female sex and a transgender woman, with a median of 35 years, with a minimum of 18 years and a maximum of 58 years.
To date, one of the most affected populations is that made up of men who have sex with other men (60 of the 133 cases registered so far refer to it and for the rest of the cases the data is not available).
However, the Ministry of Health recalled that monkeypox can affect anyone who comes into contact with a person sick with monkeypox, especially if they have direct physical contact, or with contaminated materials.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has so far confirmed 42,800 cases reported in 124, with twelve deaths. America and Europe are the two continents with the most cases, with about 21,100 each.
