Monkeypox was diagnosed for the first time in a child in Argentina
The boy is 10 years old and lives in the city of Buenos Aires. He had a fever and rashes. How the contagion occurred and what the case implies, according to experts in infectology and dermatology consulted by Infobae

For the first time, monkeypox was diagnosed in a child in Argentina. He is 10 years old and lives in the city of Buenos Aires, according to the epidemiological bulletin of the Ministry of Health of the Nation. Since last May, when the first case of infection caused by the Monkeypox virus was confirmed in the country, most of those affected have been adults, with an average age of 35 years...

... In Argentina, between May and August, smallpox cases increased slowly. From the second half of August they grew "gradually". In the first week of October, a lower number of cases was registered than in the previous week. But in the second week of October, 85 confirmed cases were reported and another 20 were under study at the time of closing of the last epidemiological bulletin.

It was the week with the most confirmed cases reported since the beginning of the outbreak in the country. "In relative terms, the average week-on-week increase registered for the last four weeks was 14%," said the epidemiology experts from the Health portfolio, referring to the evolution of the outbreak between the second half of September and the first half of October.

In total, 627 cases of people with monkeypox have been confirmed in Argentina. Until now, the youngest patient registered was an 18-year-old adolescent. Now there was the case of the 10-year-old boy. As symptoms, the little boy had a fever greater than 38° and rashes on his arms. "As an epidemiological background, it is a close contact of a confirmed case, and the area of contagion would be within the family," the experts clarified. That is, the child had been a close contact of a relative who also had the infection. At the moment, "evolves favorably."...

Monkeypox: 30% of infections in Argentina are patients with HIV
40% of monkeypox infections were recorded during August. "We are only seeing the tip of the iceberg," said Elena Obieta, an infectious disease doctor. The specialist called to live a full sexuality with care.
    September 11, 2022 - 08:19

    Elizalde

Until August 31, 170 cases of monkeypox were confirmed in the country, of the total confirmed cases, 41 presented a history of travel outside the country, as indicated by the latest National Epidemiological Bulletin issued by the Ministry of Health of the Nation. 40% of infections were reported in August, from epidemiological week 31 to 34. To date, no serious cases or deaths from the virus have been reported.

Specialists warn that the number of cases of monkeypox could be higher and do not rule out more infections. “We are convinced that we see the tip of the iceberg. There are many people who know, because they read and know or have a friend, that they have the disease and in the best of scenarios they isolate themselves at home and do not say so," Elena Obieta, an infectious disease doctor, member of the Society confirmed to AIRE. Argentina of Infectious Diseases and head of the Communicable Diseases service in the Municipality of San Isidro.

"We know that 30% of patients have HIV and are receiving treatment, there are others who are undergoing pre-exposure prophylaxis," said the specialist, who recommended leading a conscious and safe sexual life.

40% of infections were reported in the last four weeks of August, in this regard Obieta did not rule out that this trend is sustained. “These diseases evolve by outbreak. We do not know how it is going to continue, if the cases will continue to increase in the coming weeks and then go down, "said the infectologist. The National Epidemiological Bulletin indicated that 118 infections were registered in Caba, 40 in Buenos Aires, 3 in Santa Fe and 2 in Río Negro.

“The most worrying thing is that we are not aware that we are at an alert level for sexually transmitted infections, that all people must know their HIV status, an absolutely treatable disease, not yet curable, and be able to keep sex as free as possible. and pleasant, but carefully”, reiterated the infectologist.

So far, the most affected population is that made up of men who have sex with other men (90 of the 170 cases registered so far refer to it and for the rest of the cases the data is not available). Regarding the jurisdiction of residence of the confirmed cases, 69.4% reside in CABA and 23.5% in the province of Buenos Aires, and 2.9% in Córdoba.

Monkeypox can affect anyone who comes into contact with a person with monkeypox, especially if they have direct physical contact, such as sexual contact, or with contaminated materials.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, most cases in Argentina presented mild symptoms of the disease and to date no deaths from the virus have been recorded. In this regard, the infectologist stressed that the difficulties presented by the disease are very few, while mortality is less than 1%.

"The indications for hospitalization of patients are very few and basically have to do with pain because if the ulcers are very important in the genital and perianal region they can cause a lot of pain and strong analgesics such as morphine must be given," explained Orbeta.

The cases are mainly characterized by the presence of vesicular exanthems, in several cases few lesions in different locations including genitals, perianal, hands, torso and face...
