I have influenza? These are the symptoms
The health authorities explained that although you are not experiencing an epidemic, do not rule out increasing the number of dead, because there are already seriously ill patients in some hospitals.

      Thu, 23/04/2009 - 14:39

Photograph of the influenza virus. Photo: especialCiudad of Mexico .- The Ministry of Health urged people to go to the doctor immediately if symptoms such as high fever, cough, headache, muscle aches, inflammation of the throat, extreme fatigue and pain in joints.

If you have some symptoms of the medical table, you may have influenza. It is therefore recommended that the SSA to reduce hospitals, restricting the access of families to areas of greatest risk of infection and use of lenses, cover mouths, disposable gloves and gowns, if you have direct contact with someone suspected of having the disease .

Another recommendation is to wash your hands well before and after attending to patients and vaccinate the staff working in areas of high contact with the virus.

Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus that changes periodically.

Contracts or passes when we breathe droplets of secretions from a person infected with influenza virus. This virus multiplies in the respiratory tract, causing inflammation in the throat, nose and bronchi.

Anyone can get influenza, especially when there are outbreaks or epidemics. Some people are more susceptible than others to contract the disease as well as complications. These people are considered "high risk" by the damage that can cause to their health.

According to data provided by the Ministry of Health in 2009 so far 20 people have died of influenza victims. The virus came from United States and that is why the federal agency issued an alert to all hospitals in the Republic, where isolation wards were established.

To combat the virus among medical staff, the federal government spent 25 million pesos to buy 400 thousand doses of vaccine antiinfluenza.

Data provided by the SSA explained that the 20 died from the virus, 13 were detected in the Distrito Federal, 4 in San Luis Potosi, two in Baja California and one in Oaxaca.

The health authorities explained that although you are not experiencing an epidemic, do not rule out increasing the number of dead, because there are already seriously ill patients in some hospitals. Besides, when there are cases of influenza, is an internal protocol in hospitals.

During the past winter season were 7 thousand 237 cases with influenza, of which 4 thousand 545 were detected between New Year and April 22.

In the Federal District identified 120 cases in 23 hospitals. The sector of the City Health reported two thousand 264 cases compatible with influenza during 2008.

Of all the probable cases were registered during 2008 (7 mil 425), there were 166 warrant isolation. However, only 30 deaths were recorded throughout the year.

Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova, called upon the people to remain calm in the cases of influenza stationary and indicated that no cases of influenza have been detected in medical staff, but other employees in that sector.

"We must remain calm, especially the families must cooperate so that when they have symptoms with a doctor if they do not sneezing directly to others, if the problem does not say hello or kiss or hand, may not share utensils for food if they are not washed, "said the secretary.http://www.milenio.com/node/203924

And another source indicating a possible case in Ontario. There is substantial travel in these areas; this illness is likely all over North America.

Southlake Regional Health Centre has stepped up infection control after treating a patient with flu-like symptoms who recently returned from Mexico.
The Mexican health secretariat issued a nation alert Wednesday after a flu outbreak has been blamed for 20 deaths in the past month.

Southlake was notified about the outbreak by the province Wednesday and told they elevated from flu-like symptoms to severe respiratory conditions in about five days, with some patients requiring assisted ventilation, hospital spokesperson Andrea Griepsma said in a media release.

The hospital is now advising residents who have been to Mexico in the past two weeks and are experiencing flu-like symptoms to seek medical treatment.

Symptoms include cough, sore throat, fever, chills, muscle and joint aches and shortness of breath.

Appropriate infection control practices have been put into place at Southlake, Ms Griepsma said, adding staff has been advised to watch for patients presenting with signs and symptoms of an influenza-like illness, particularly if they have been in Mexico in recent weeks.

While some tests have confirmed influenza A and B viruses, there is no evidence to suggest infection with an unusual pathogen, including a unique strain of influenza, the hospital spokesperson said.

BC is British Columbia, in Canada again. I strongly disagree with the red statement - I think this outbreak was covered up for a month or more.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control will warn travellers recently returned from Mexico to beware of a severe respiratory illness in some areas of that country that has left 20 people dead.

Dr. Danuta Skowronski, of the BC Centre for Disease Control, has called a news conference for this afternoon after being alerted by the Public Health Agency of Canada to the disease. There are no known cases in B.C.

Ontario's chief medical officer said health authorities remain cautious as many Canadian travellers return from Mexico after 20 people have died there from an apparent severe respiratory illness.

Dr. David Williams told a news conference Thursday that no Canadians have been affected by the illness, which has surfaced in south and central regions of the popular vacation destination.

"(Canada) hasn't had any cases directly tied to it yet, but it doesn't mean we won't be vigilant looking for it," Williams said. "We will continue to look in case it has any remote connection, we want to see if we can connect those dots correctly.

"We're heightening the awareness system and alerting system and asking physicians to take any (potential) cases seriously."

Hundreds of cases of the illness, which has severe influenza-like symptoms and is mostly affecting people between the ages of 25 and 44, have been reported, and Williams said a steady flow of information is key to public protection.

Dr. Arlene King, director general of the Centre for Immunization and Respiratory Infectious Diseases at the Public Health Agency of Canada, told the news conference that one of the lessons learned from the SARS outbreak in 2003 was the need for effective communications between various agencies and health care providers.

Williams also stressed that a stringent record of any illnesses that might match the profile of the respiratory condition should be relayed to the proper authorities.

"We'd rather know more than less . . . we want to know all the details," he said. "That's why we're engaging our wider medical community at this time to active surveillance rather than passive surveillance.

"For (Mexico), it's early, and we're pleased they moved so quickly to inform their partners of what's going on. . . . That's to be applauded and that probably wouldn't have happened five or seven years ago."

Alert Issued After Serious Mystery Ailment Affects Canadians Returning From Mexico
            Thursday April 23, 2009
            CityNews.ca Staff
It's one of the most popular travel destinations for Canadians looking to escape the harsh northern winters. But over the past few years, Mexico has received ongoing black eyes over concerns about personal safety (the murder of a Woodbridge couple), business ethics (last week's hotel debacle over the failure of Conquest Vacations) and its justice system (the long saga of Brenda Martin.)

But now there's a new worry for Great White Northerners travelling south of the U.S. border - health. The Public Health Agency of Canada is looking into a growing number of reports about Canadians returning from the south and central parts of the country with a severe respiratory illness.

The mystery malady has puzzled experts both here and in Mexico, who have yet to identify exactly what it is. The ailment seems to primarily affect young adults who went on their trips healthy but failed to return in the same condition.
The symptoms begin as a flu-like illness and rapidly deteriorate to respiratory distress and breathing difficulties.

Doctors in Mexico are well aware of its presence. At least 20 people have died there so far - mostly patients between the ages of 25 and 44. Hundreds more have been sent to hospital, with some winding up on ventilators.

Even health care workers have gotten sick treating those who are infected - a disturbing similarity to what happened in Toronto during the SARS crisis in 2003.

Doctors on this side of the border are being advised to look out for patients coming in with the symptoms, while the Pan American Health Organization - a division of the World Health Organization - is attempting to diagnose what the bug might be and how to stop it.

Some experts believe it could a severe form of late season influenza but they haven't been able to confirm anything yet and are testing to see if it's a new kind of virus they're not familiar with.

            Symptoms include:

            Fever,
            Cough,
            Sore throat,
            Muscle and joint pain,
            Shortness of breath.
It turns into severe breathing problems about five days after the initial infection surfaces.

What should you do if you think you or a loved one has been affected and when should you worry? The outbreak is relatively recent so you if you've been back for a few weeks, you're probably O.K. And if you don't suffer from the major symptoms, you're more likely to have a common cold than anything else.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, if you get sick when you're out of the country, you're required to tell a customs officer as you re-enter, in case you need special treatment.

If you become ill after returning, see your doctor as soon as possible and tell your physician where you've been and what care you received while you were away.

So far, no warnings on travel to the country have been issued although authorities are recommending any Canadians heading to Mexico get a flu shot. They say there's no real reason to worry and most experts say you shouldn't cancel any planned trips to the country.

You have no idea about this. Do not accuse without knowing the facts. Public health is a challenge in every country.

The National Center of Epidemiological Surveillance and Disease Control confirmed that in Oaxaca there has been no epidemic or outbreak of Avian and explained that in Mexico there are no recorded cases of this disease.

The agency acknowledged that in March and April 2009 has been observed in the country increased the number of cases of seasonal influenza, which is unusual since, in previous years, the peak of disease has been presented in December.

Adem?s, se han presentado algunos brotes de neumon?a grave de r?pida evoluci?n en adultos de edad reproductiva.
In addition, there have been some outbreaks of rapidly evolving severe pneumonia in adults of reproductive age.

Ante esta situaci?n, el Centro Nacional de Vigilancia Epidemiol?gica inform? que el Sistema Nacional de Salud puso en marcha en el pa?s un operativo de vigilancia epidemiol?gica intensificada.

This is generally a mild infection, however, can cause serious complications in susceptible individuals (persons with respiratory diseases or with previous chronic illnesses and seniors).

Ontario officials warn of mysterious Mexican illness

TORONTO ? Ontario officials are scrambling to deal with a mysterious, SARS-likle illness that has killed an estimated 20 people in Mexico.

Dr. Arlene King, who leads the Centre for Immunization and Respiratory Infectious Diseases at the Public Health Agency of Canada, said her organization just learned about the severe respiratory outbreak in the ?last couple of days.?

?There are pneumonia outbreaks, probably of an unknown origin at this point in time, occurring in Mexico,? Dr. King told a news conference Thursday, where she was named the province?s new chief medical officer of health beginning June 15. ?A number of different clusters have occurred over the last month or so? And these have obviously created concern related to their potential to get larger and to spread outside Mexico.?

Ontario public health officials have asked local authorities to be on the lookout for influenza-like illness among people who have recently traveled to Mexico, where an estimated 20 people have died from the illness in recent weeks.

Another British Columbia, Canada source. A lot of this matches the other source, but there is some new information (in bold):

VANCOUVER ? A severe respiratory illness believed to have killed 20 people in Mexico may affect Canadians who recently returned from the country, B.C. health officials warned Thursday.

So far, there have been no confirmed links in Canada to what was described today as ?clusters of severe respiratory illnesses in some areas in Mexico.?

During a press conference in Vancouver, Dr. Danuta Skowronski of the BC Centre for Disease Control said there have been reports of severe flu-like illness in B.C. but so far none have been linked to Mexico.

?We?re doing our best to keep people informed while our investigation is ongoing,? added Skowronski, an epidemiologist specializing in influenza and respiratory illness.

She said Canadians who have recently returned from Mexico should be on alert for severe flu-like symptoms that could be connected to the illness.

The illness acts quickly and has led to death in Mexico within five days, she said, adding among those who died were healthy young people between the ages of 20 to 44.

?They deteriorate quite quickly,? Skowronski said.

The flu-like symptoms include fever, cough, general aches and pains and shortness of breath, which quickly progresses to trouble breathing and severe respiratory illness, she said.

Skowronski said an advisory was issued by the Public Health Agency of Canada to health services across Canada, but so far no travel advisory has been issued for Canadians headed to Mexico.

?The vast majority are returning from Mexico relaxed,? she said of Canadian tourists.

But she advised travellers to take the usual precautions, such as getting a flu vaccination before heading south and washing hands thoroughly while in Mexico.

The affected areas of Mexico were Mexico City, San Luis Potos?, Oaxaca and Baja, Skowronski said.

Dr. Arlene King, director general of the Centre for Immunization and Respiratory Infectious Diseases at the Public Health Agency of Canada, said one of the lessons learned from the SARS outbreak in 2003 was the need for effective communications between various agencies and health care providers.

According to the federal government, more than 1.2 million Canadians visit Mexico each year.

El d?ficit de m?dicos en aquellos puntos se debe a que los galenos se reh?san a atrabajar en lugares alejados.
The shortfall of doctors in those points is because the doctors refuse to atrabajar in remote locations.
