Main developments in past 24 hours

• First Published Trials of Specific Pandemic Vaccines - Immune responses after one or two doses of monovalent unadjuvanted and adjuvanted influenza A (H1N1) 2009 vaccines;
• 114 new cases reported in the EU and EFTA countries, reaching a total of 50 892 cases.

This report is based on official information provided by the national public health websites, or through other official communication channels. An update on the number of confirmed cases as of 15 September 2009, 16:00 hours CEST, is presented in Table 1 and Table 2.

Disclaimer:

Several countries have now announced recommendations on treatment on clinical signs only and focused laboratory testing only for specific population groups or in outbreaks. For these countries, the reported numbers of cases presented in this report will severely underestimate the true incidence in the country and will not be comparable to countries still recommending laboratory tests of all suspected influenza cases.


Scientific advance

First published trials of specific pandemic vaccines

Two new articles report first immunogenicity and safety data after vaccinating with one dose of monovalent unadjuvanted or one-two doses of monovalent adjuvanted influenza A (H1N1) 2009 vaccines.

Epidemiologic update

All 27 EU and 4 EFTA countries are reporting cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza.

Since April 2009, a total of 50892 confirmed cases and 137 deaths have been reported (Table 1).

In the past 24 hours, 114 cases were reported from the EU and EFTA countries.

Out of the 137 reported deaths, one new fatal case is reported from Greece.

The latest available updates on hospital admissions per Member State are presented in Table 2.

The latest available updates on new and on confirmed fatal pandemic (H1N1) cases outside of the EU/EFTA area by country are presented in Table 3.

Public Health Developments

Using reviews planning assumptions from the most affected country in Europe (the UK) ECDC has revised its recommended planning assumptions for European countries and extended these out to May 2010, i.e. for the first year of the pandemic. These scale down the assumptions generally from ones issued in July and for the first time include a recommended estimate of the intensive care capacity which countries might use. Epidemiologic update

All 27 EU and 4 EFTA countries are reporting cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza. Since April 2009, a total of 51 113 confirmed cases and 137 deaths have been reported (Table 1). In the past 24 hours, 221 cases were reported from the EU and EFTA countries. No new fatal cases were reported.

EC communication published

The European Commission (EC) published a Communication on the Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 outlining five key strategy strands on response; Joint procurement of vaccines, Support to third countries, Vaccination strategies, Regulatory process for antiviral medicines and vaccines and Communication.

US FDA approves pandemic vaccines

US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) approved the intramuscular pandemic vaccines produced by CSL Limited, Novartis, and Sanofi Pasteur and the nasal spray vaccine of Medimmune. The Novartis, Sanofi, and MedImmune vaccines are approved for both adults and children, while the CSL vaccine is indicated only for adults. Clinical trials indicate that one 15-microgram dose is sufficient to produce immune response in adults, while two doses are required for children.

Influenza A(H1N1)v shedding studies presented

According to media, results of two unpublished studies presented at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) in San Francisco indicate that a proportion of H1N1 patients shed virus for longer than 7 days. US CDC and experts do not expect these results to change selfisolation recommendations. Study on respiratory protection for healthcare workers presented

In another unpublished study presented at the ISAAC, results of a 5-week trial of surgical masks vs. N95 respirators among 1 936 healthcare workers in China were shown. According to this study, N95 masks (with or without fit-testing) provide protection against influenza and other respiratory viruses, while surgical masks were ineffective.

ECDC's latest worst case scenario to be used, not as a prediction, but as a planning tool:

Up to 30% clinical infection rate

Up to 1% hospitalizations

Up to .1% case fatality factor

Looks a lot like the US PCAST report.

There is a big BUT in this scenario: 25% of the hospitalised cases requiring intensive care at any given time

I don't know any country that would have, even remotely, 1 ICU bed for 4 hospital beds.

So mortality level will raise like soda then!!

Main developments in past 24 hours

• First fatality reported in Luxembourg;
• 944 new cases reported in the EU and EFTA countries, reaching a total of 52 057 cases;

This report is based on official information provided by the national public health websites, or through other official communication channels. An update on the number of confirmed cases as of 17 September 2009, 16:00 hours CEST, is presented in Table 1 and Table 2.

Disclaimer:

Several countries have now announced recommendations on treatment on clinical signs only and focused laboratory testing only for specific population groups or in outbreaks. For these countries, the reported numbers of cases presented in this report will severely underestimate the true incidence in the country and will not be comparable to countries still recommending laboratory tests of all suspected influenza cases.


Epidemiologic update

All 27 EU and 4 EFTA countries are reporting cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza. Since April 2009, a total of 52 057 confirmed cases and 145 deaths have been reported (Table 1). In the past 24 hours, 944 cases were reported from the EU and EFTA countries.

Out of the 145 fatalities reported ? One from Norway, one from Luxembourg and six from France (two New Caledonia, one Guyana, two Reunion and one mainland France).

The latest available updates on hospital admissions per Member State are presented in Table 2.

The latest available updates on new and on confirmed fatal pandemic (H1N1) cases outside of the EU/EFTA area by country are presented in Table 3.


Other updates

Preliminary, unpublished, study results from Australia suggest most pregnant pandemic influenza patients referred to the ICU in three Melbourne hospitals were deficient in IgG2. The results were presented at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) and quoted by media sources.

Weekly Influenza Surveillance Overview published

During week 37/2009 only three (Ireland, Sweden and the UK-Northern Ireland) of 20 countries reported ILI/ARI activity above their baseline levels. Out of the total number of sentinel specimens that tested positive for influenza, 96% were influenza A(H1N1) 2009. Seven SARI cases were reported by the Netherlands.

Epidemiologic update

All 27 EU and 4 EFTA countries are reporting cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza. Since April 2009, a total of 52 710 confirmed cases and 157 deaths have been reported (Table 1). In the past 24 hours, 653 cases were reported from the EU and EFTA countries.

Out of the 157 fatalities reported ? One from Malta, four from Netherlands, seven Spain and two from the United Kingdom.

The latest available updates on hospital admissions per Member State are presented in Table 2.

The latest available updates on new and on confirmed fatal pandemic (H1N1) cases outside of the EU/EFTA area by country are presented in Table 3.


Other updates

The HPA reported two cases of oseltamivir-resistant pandemic influenza. According to media reports, the UK Chief Medical Officer also commented on increases of ILI consultation rates seen in England's sentinel surveillance system.

The Northern Ireland Department of Agriculture and Rural Development announced that influenza A(H1N1)v has been identified in a number of piglets in the country.

The US government announced it will donate 10% of its vaccine orders through the World Health Organization (WHO) to other countries. Several EU and non-EU countries will also join this effort.


Weekend Daily Updates discontinued

ECDC will now discontinue producing Daily Updates on the weekends until further needs arise. Starting from Monday, the Daily Updates will be produced by 09.00hrs every morning Mon-Fri.

Media updates

Brazil Ministry of Health expressed doubts about oseltamivir treatment

According to Brazilian media reports, a study describing the treatment of 83 critically ill patients in Rio Grande du Sol could not show any increase in survival rates of patients treated with oseltamivir within 48 hours of infection. The results of this unpublished study were presented to the media by the Secretary of Health of Rio Grande du Sol.


Director General of WHO warns of shortfall in pandemic vaccine production

World production of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 vaccine will be "substantially less" than the previously forecasted 94 million doses per week. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) quoted by media reports this is due to production capacity being used for seasonal vaccine and the low yields of the pandemic influenza strain.


Epidemiologic update

All 27 EU and 4 EFTA countries are reporting cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza. Since April 2009, a total of 52 725 confirmed cases and 158 deaths have been reported (Table 1). In the past 48 hours, 15 cases were reported from the EU and EFTA countries. Additional fatalities reported were one from France for a total of 158 fatalities.

The latest available updates on hospital admissions per Member State are presented in Table 2.

The latest available updates as of September 20th, 2009, at 16:00, on new and on confirmed fatal pandemic (H1N1) cases outside the EU/EFTA area by country, are presented in Table 3.

Main developments in past 24 hours

This report is based on official information provided by the national public health websites or through other official communication channels. An update on the number of confirmed cases as of 22 September 2009, 09:00 hours CEST, for Europe, is presented in Table 1 and Table 2. Updates on number of confirmed deaths, as of 21 September 2009, 16:00 hours CEST, for the world, are presented in Table 3.

Disclaimer:

Several countries have now announced recommendations on treatment on clinical signs only and focused laboratory testing only for specific population groups or in outbreaks. For these countries, the reported numbers of cases presented in this report will severely underestimate the true incidence in the country and will not be comparable to countries still recommending laboratory tests of all suspected influenza cases.


Media updates

NIAID study suggests one dose of pandemic vaccine protective and safe in 10-17 year olds

Early, unpublished, results from a US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) study suggest that a single 15-microgram dose of a non-adjuvanted pandemic influenza vaccine is safe and generates an immune response likely to be protective in 10-17 year old children and adolescents. Younger children did not have equally robust responses. The vaccine used in the study is manufactured by Sanofi-Pasteur.

China starts pandemic vaccination program

Media reports indicate that China has started vaccinating students participating in next weeks National Day celebrations, making it the first country in the world to start a vaccination program. The health ministry plans to vaccinate 65 million people, 5% of the countrys total population before the years end.


Epidemiologic update

All 27 EU and 4 EFTA countries are reporting cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza. Since April 2009, a total of 52 929 confirmed cases and 159 deaths have been reported (Table 1). In the past 24 hours, 204 cases were reported from the EU and EFTA countries. Among the 159 deaths, one new fatal case was reported from mainland France.

The latest available updates on hospital admissions per Member State are presented in Table 2.

The latest available updates as of September 21th, 2009, at 16:00, on new and on confirmed fatal pandemic (H1N1) cases outside the EU/EFTA area by country, are presented in Table 3.

Scientific Advances

A recent paper from Thailand has reported how treatment with a neuraminidase inhibitor (oseltamivir) protected people with seasonal influenza against severe outcomes and death. These findings emphasise the importance of early treatment for cases of infection with the pandemic influenza as detailed in recent guidance from the USA Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Main developments in past 24 hours

• Public Health Development published - Antiviral resistant viruses;
• 471 new cases reported in the EU and EFTA countries, reaching a total of 53 513 cases;
• Portugal announces first fatal case due to H1N1 Flu.

This report is based on official information provided by the national public health websites or through other official communication channels. An update on the number of confirmed cases as of 24 September 2009, 09:00 hours CEST, for Europe, is presented in Table 1 and Table 2. Updates on number of confirmed deaths, as of 23 September 2009, 16:00 hours CEST, for the world, are presented in Table 3.

Disclaimer:

Several countries have now announced recommendations on treatment on clinical signs only and focused laboratory testing only for specific population groups or in outbreaks. For these countries, the reported numbers of cases presented in this report will severely underestimate the true incidence in the country and will not be comparable to countries still recommending laboratory tests of all suspected influenza cases.


Public Health Developments

Another isolated case of probable transmission of oseltamivir resistant pandemic viruses has been reported in the USA.

CDC and WHO guidelines emphasise the importance of sparing use of neuraminidase inhibitors for chemoprophylaxis but continuing to use them for treatment according to national and international guidelines.

Epidemiologic update

All 27 EU and 4 EFTA countries are reporting cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza. Since April 2009, a total of 53 513 confirmed cases and 163 deaths have been reported (Table 1). In the past 24 hours, 471 cases were reported from the EU and EFTA countries. Amongst the 163 deaths reported, Portugal announced its first fatality, one additional death reported in France and two in Italy.

The latest available updates on hospital admissions per Member State are presented in Table 2.

The latest available updates as of September 23rd, 2009, at 16:00, on new and on confirmed fatal pandemic (H1N1) cases outside the EU/EFTA area by country, are presented in Table 3.


Other news

WHO recommendations for seasonal vaccine strains published

WHO published yesterday the recommendations for the composition of the 2010 southern hemisphere seasonal vaccine.

The three strains recommended by the WHO today are:

• For pandemic H1N1, an A/California/7/2009-like virus (the pandemic vaccine strain)
• For H3N2, an A/Perth/16/2009-like virus
• For B, a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus

Review on effectiveness of physical interventions published

The British Medical Journal (BMJ) published a systematic review on the effectiveness of physical interventions to interrupt or delay the spread of respiratory viruses. The auhtors conclude that despite the difficulty of implementing many measures in the long-term, there is eveidence that many simple and low cost interventions reduce the transmission of epidemic respiratory viruses.

A meta-analysis on the association with influenza with myocardial infarctions published

Lancet Infectious Diseases published a meta-analysis on the evidence that influenza or influenza-like-illness (ILI) triggers acute myocardial infarctions or cardiovascular deaths. The authors conclude that consistent associations between influenza and myocardial infarctions have been shown, however the evidence on association with cardiovascular deaths is weaker.

Media Highlights

Widely covered in all the media this week was the news that China had begun its vaccination strategy and that initial surveillance from the Chinese authorities suggested that there was no adverse reactions to the vaccine. How vaccines would be administered for the different risk groups in several countries has also been widely reported, in particular if one or two doses would be sufficient for young children. How countries are preparing for their individual pandemic vaccination strategies has also been covered extensively in the media over the course of the week. In particular as many companies suggest they are nearing completion and delivery of ordered vaccines. In addition many reports covered the start dates for other countries, notably Mexico, which will begin in October. However, there has also been broad media coverage on the WHO suggestion that worldwide vaccine production was currently less than expected, and that the virus had not mutated in any way.

Epidemiologic update

All 27 EU and 4 EFTA countries are reporting cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza. Since April 2009, a total of 54 119 confirmed cases and 173 deaths have been reported (Table 1). In the past 24 hours 606 cases were reported from the EU and EFTA countries. Amongst the 173 deaths Hungary reported one additional fatality; Spain confirmed four additional fatalities since their last report, and the UK confirmed four additional deaths as well.

The latest available updates on hospital admissions per Member State are presented in Table 2.

The latest available updates as of September 24th, 2009, at 16:00, on new and on confirmed fatal pandemic (H1N1) cases outside the EU/EFTA area by country, are presented in Table 3.


Other updates

Addition of the pandemic strain recommended for the 2010 Southern Hemisphere Season WHO yesterday reported on the outcome of its vaccine strain selection meeting for the next Southern Hemisphere influenza season which will take place in what is the European Summer of 2010. WHO has recommended two changes, incorporation of an antigen representing the new pandemic strain A(H1N1) 2009 (an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus) replacing the previous seasonal influenza A(H1N1) and a change to a new A(H3N2) antigen (an A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus) because of some drift in the circulating A(H3N2) viruses. There is no change in the recommended B virus component a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus.

Hence the three components are

• an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus;
• an A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus;
• a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus.

A fuller description and comment on the report will follow next week in the ECDC public health developments series. These recommendations will not necessarily be those for the following European season (winter 2010-2011). WHO will made recommendations on that following its regular Northern Hemisphere meeting that will take place in early 2010.

Main developments in past 72 hours

• ECDC Pandemic Risk Assessment updated;
• Weekly overview of selected non-EU countries;
• Possible first fatal case in Germany;
• Canadian provinces amending seasonal influenza vaccination campaigns;
• 548 new cases reported in the EU and EFTA countries, reaching a total of 54 667 cases.

This report is based on official information provided by the national public health websites or through other official communication channels. An update on the number of confirmed cases as of 28 September 2009, 09:00 hours CEST, for Europe, is presented in Table 1 and Table 2. Updates on number of confirmed deaths, as of 27 September 2009, 16:00 hours CEST, for the world, are presented in Table 3.

Disclaimer:

Several countries have now announced recommendations on treatment on clinical signs only and focused laboratory testing only for specific population groups or in outbreaks. For these countries, the reported numbers of cases presented in this report will severely underestimate the true incidence in the country and will not be comparable to countries still recommending laboratory tests of all suspected influenza cases.


ECDC Pandemic Risk Assessment updated

September Update of ECDC?s Risk Assessment for the Pandemic

ECDC regularly updates its Risk Assessment incorporating new information and analyses so as to better inform the European Union on what can be expected this autumn when pandemic waves are inevitable. This particular update draws especially on data and experience from the Southern Hemisphere?s temperate countries during their winter season. Understanding over a number of the previous areas of uncertainty are improving rapidly.

What is new in this version (dated September 25th) is:

• a conclusion from the Southern Hemisphere experience is that well prepared essential services should not overly taxed by this pandemic in its current form, that the numbers of deaths did not seem to rise in the Southern Hemisphere countries above what is seen with seasonal influenza though the deaths were in different groups, notably younger people but there will be pressures experienced by hospital services, especially intensive care units.
• the difference between the experience of most people who are infected by the pandemic virus (mild disease) and the few who experience very severe disease has become considerably more apparent.
• the most common severe disease, viral pneumonia causing Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome that is rarely seen with seasonal influenza and difficult for doctors to manage.
• planning assumptions (reasonable worst-case scenarios) for clinical attack, hospitalisation and case fatality rates have been reduced.
• there are a number of indications of there being significant numbers of asymptomatic infections.
• the additional individual risk of severe disease experienced by pregnant women because of infection with the pandemic infection has now been roughly quantified as a fourfold increase in risk for the individual

At the same time the Risk Assessment continue to noted that waves of pandemic viruses are inevitable this autumn in all EU/EEA Member States and transmission is already starting to pick up in some countries as mentioned in the Weekly Influenza Surveillance Overview

However there remain areas of uncertainty (?known unknowns?) which ECDC will be working with MS, WHO and other international partners to resolve where possible

• the mix of influenza and other viruses that will be circulating this coming autumn and winter in Europe and the implications for use of seasonal vaccines
• the exact timing and pattern of spread of the virus in Europe in the autumn and winter
• shedding of the virus from infected persons and the implications of this for infectivity
• more precise parameters for modelling relative and attributable risk of more severe disease
• pathological processes underlying severe disease and individual vulnerability population
• level mortality attributable to the pandemic virus in Europe
• the protective value of early treatment with antivirals
• data and analyses concerning the likely patient numbers in hospitals
• information concerning the impact on children in general

Weekly overview of selected non-EU countries

In this section we provide a weekly review of the surveillance reports and other information on the evolution of the current influenza pandemic in selected non-EU countries. The countries have been selected based on geographical location, appropriate population size, adequate surveillance systems and accessible and reliable surveillance data.


Chile (pop 16.6 million)

The number of pandemic influenza cases reported weekly to the national level has been decreasing since week 28. Up to week 37, the number of confirmed cases was 12 248, out of which 1 562 presented with Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). The majority of SARI cases were infants (73.9/100 000 pop) or children between 1-4 years of age (16.2/100 000pop). The majority (55%) of SARI cases had a chronic underlying illness. Out of the confirmed cases 126 have had a fatal outcome associated with pandemic influenza. The majority (64.8%) of the fatal cases had an underlying illness. No new fatalities were reported during weeks 36-37.

The majority of influenza strains identified until week 34 were A(H1N1)v and less than 0.5% were identified as seasonal H1 or H3 strains. Very few influenza viruses were identified through surveillance activities during week 34.

Brazil (pop. 192 million)

Since the beginning of the pandemic until week 36, 46 810 Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases were notified in Brazil, of which 9 249 were subsequently laboratory-confirmed as influenza A (H1N1)v infections. Underlying risk-factors were reported for 37.4% of the confirmed SARI cases. The number of confirmed cases as well as ILI cases appears to have been decreasing for the last four weeks. Of the confirmed SARI cases, 899 (9.7%) have had a fatal outcome. Mortality due to SARI cases with confirmed influenza A (H1N1)v is currently 0,47/100.000 inhabitants.

Out of the 9 249 SARI cases linked to influenza A (H1N1)v, 37.7% presented with at least one of risk factor (including pregnancy), which does not significantly differ from what is observed for seasonal influenza in the country. Among SARI cases in fertile age 24.3% were pregnant, which does not differ from what is observed with seasonal influenza (16.8%).

Out of 18 257 PCR tests conducted up to week 36, 70.1% tested positive for influenza A (H1N1)v. This proportion has not changed much in the last four weeks, although the number of samples being collected is decreasing rapidly.

Australia (pop. 20.7 million)

In the national report for September 24th the total number of fatal cases associated with the pandemic influenza (H1N1) 2009 is now 178. There are still 290 cases hospitalised due to (H1N1) 2009 and 54 (19.1%) of them are in Intensive Care Units. The total number of hospitalisations in Australia since the pandemic began is 4 778. All of these figures indicate a decreasing trend for last few weeks. Fourteen percent of the fatal cases and 3% of the currently hospitalised cases are indigenous Australians. According to recent censuses, around 2.5% of the Australian population consider themselves indigenous.

New Zealand (pop. 4.2 million)

The latest report (September 23rd) indicates that the circulation of influenza in the community continues to decline, but are still above seasonal levels. The ILI consultation rate from a sentinel surveillance system has been decreasing since week 29, but is still at a higher level than during the past two years. The number of deaths from Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 2009 is now 17 and has not changed in the last two weeks. These are deaths where swine flu was a primary cause. There are a number of other deaths that are being investigated by the Coroner's office. As of September 23rd , only three patients were reported to be in hospital due to influenza (H1N1) 2009 or its complications. The pressure on ICU?s is now so low that national authorities have stopped monitoring patient numbers. In general, schools are reporting usual levels of absence for this time of year.

The majority of isolates received through the sentinel surveillance system have been influenza A(H1N1)v from week since week 27. Very few influenza viruses were identified during week 38. All isolates tested so far have been sensitive to oseltamivir

South Africa (pop. 48.6 million)

As of September 22nd, South Africa has confirmed 11 545 cases of pandemic (H1N1) 09,. The number of deaths related to the pandemic is 59. It appears that the number of confirmed cases and deaths have not increasing in the last two weeks.

Out of the 59 confirmed fatal cases 39 were women. 21 fatal cases were pregnant or in the puerperal period. Ten out of the 14 pregnant women tested for HIV were seropositive and 4 of the 21 pregnant cases had active pulmonary TB. Out of the 14 non-pregnant cases tested for HIV, 4 were seropositive. Four percent of the non-pregnant cases had active tuberculosis.

The recommended national strategy is laboratory confirmation only for moderate or severe cases, however the national authorities believe it is likely that most cases are still being captured by the surveillance system.

Other updates

Possible first fatal case in Germany

Robert Koch Institute of Germany informed that a fatal case of pneumonia and multiple organ failure in a 36-year-old woman was possible related to influenza A(H1N1)v. This death in a patient with pre-existing respiratory illness would be the first fatal case recorded in Germany.


Canadian provinces amending seasonal influenza vaccination campaigns

According to media reports Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nova Scotia have suspended seasonal influenza vaccination campaigns for people under the age of 65. These decisions have been made pending peer-review and publication of a Canadian study suggesting seasonal influenza vaccination is associated with an increased risk of infection with pandemic influenza. Similar associations have not been reported from countries in Europe or in the Southern Hemisphere.


Epidemiologic update

All 27 EU and 4 EFTA countries are reporting cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza. Since April 2009, a total of 54 667 confirmed cases and 174 deaths have been reported (Table 1). In the past 72 hours 548 cases were reported from the EU and EFTA countries. Amongst the 174 deaths Portugal reported one additional fatality.

The latest available updates on hospital admissions per Member State are presented in Table 2.

The latest available updates as of September 27th, 2009, at 16:00, on new and on confirmed fatal pandemic (H1N1) cases outside the EU/EFTA area by country, are presented in Table 3.

Main developments in past 24 hours

• Total of 174 fatal cases in Europe and EFTA countries and 4043 in the rest of the world have been reported up to date;
• ECDC discontinues publishing confirmed case counts.

This report is based on official information provided by the national public health websites or through other official communication channels. An update on the number of confirmed fatal cases, as of 28 September 2009 16:00 hours CEST, for the world, and 29 September 09:00 hours CEST, for Europe is presented in Table 2.


Epidemiologic update

All 27 EU and 4 EFTA countries are reporting cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza. Since April 2009, a total 173 deaths have been reported. In the past 24 hours no fatal cases were announced.

The latest available updates as of September 28th, 2009, at 16:00, on new and on confirmed fatal pandemic (H1N1) cases outside the EU/EFTA area by country, are also presented in Table 2.

The latest available updates on hospital admissions per Member State are presented in Table 1.


Daily Update contents

ECDC will now stop publishing numbers of confirmed cases reported from EU/EFTA member states or from countries around the world. This is due to the fact that most European countries are now recommending laboratory confirmation only in certain population groups like the risk groups. The World Health Organization has also recommended that countries verify only the first few hundred cases and after that exhaustive sampling is not recommended any more.

We will continue to monitor the evolution of the pandemic within and outside of Europe with the number of fatal cases by country. This figure is likely to give an overall impression of the evolution of the situation, when interpreted together with the national surveillance reports.

However, it must be emphasized that the number of fatal cases per country are likely to be gross underestimates of the true number of fatal cases associated with pandemic influenza.

Access to healthcare, the quality of the laboratory network in the country, the quality of the surveillance system and the case definition used for identifying fatal cases all affect these figures and will vary from country to country.

Daily Updates will be produced by 09:00hrs every morning Monday to Friday. No updates will be produced during weekends and the Daily Update published on Monday includes weekend?s information. The production cycle will be reviewed as needed.
