Indonesia confirms first cases of H1N1 flu virus

    Wed Jun 24, 2009

JAKARTA, June 24 (Reuters) - Indonesia's health minister confirmed on Wednesday the country's first cases of the H1N1 flu virus after an Indonesian pilot in Jakarta and a British woman in the resort island of Bali tested positive for the virus.

The 22-year-old British woman had been living in Australia, while the pilot, 37, had travelled to Australia and Hong Kong, Health Minister Siti Fadillah Supari said.

The minister told a news conference that she believed both cases had originated from Australia and there was no evidence the virus had spread in Indonesia, the world's fourth-most populous country with 226 million people.

"I assure you Indonesians have not been infecting other Indonesians. Both cases were transmitted from abroad," she said, adding that those in contact with the two confirmed sufferers had been screened for the virus.

She urged health authorities in Bali, the country's main tourism hub, to increase surveillance of those visiting the island from abroad.

The minister also said she was concerned that if H1N1 got a foothold in Indonesia there was a risk it could combine with the much deadlier H5N1 bird flu virus.

Indonesia has the highest death toll from bird flu of any country, with the country's bird flu commission confirming 119 deaths from the disease.

Indonesia Finds Swine Flu Virus After Exporting Cases (Update1)

By Jason Gale and Naila Firdausi

June 24 (Bloomberg) -- Indonesia reported its first swine flu infections, two days after it was listed by the Singapore health ministry among countries known to have exported cases to the city-state.

An Indonesian pilot who had traveled to Australia and Hong Kong before falling ill is recovering in Jakarta, and a British woman who arrived from Australia is hospitalized in Bali, Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said today. Tests on relatives of the pilot were negative for the new H1N1 virus, she said.

Health officials worry that transmission of the virus in Indonesia, Southeast Asia?s most-populous nation, would increase the chances that the bug combines with the H5N1 bird flu strain that?s lethal in three of every five reported cases. Indonesia accounts for a third of the 433 fatal bird flu cases reported to the World Health Organization worldwide.

?What we fear is if H1N1 combines with H5N1,? Supari told reporters in Jakarta. ?The combined virus may have the ease of spread, like H1N1 has, with the increased virulence of H5N1.?

The bug may have been circulating in Indonesia if infected travelers from the nation carried it into Singapore. People carrying the virus typically take two to seven days to develop a fever, cough and other symptoms.

?So far, there are no local cases,? Supari said, adding that visitors from Australia to Bali, a popular holiday destination, will be screened more carefully for the virus. ?I am, frankly, concerned about visitors from Australia. We will add special measures for this.?

      Exported Cases

Indonesia, which neighbors Singapore, is among 15 places where the virus has spread in the community or which are known to have exported cases, Singapore?s health ministry said. Others include Hong Kong, Australia and Thailand, it said.

More than 52,000 cases have been reported by at least 90 countries, the WHO said on June 22. The Geneva-based agency is watching for signs the disease is worsening as the germ circulates globally, creating opportunities for its genes to mutate or combine with those of other viruses. The WHO on June 11 declared that swine flu had triggered the first influenza pandemic since 1968.

In Singapore, students and staff who have visited affected countries since June 22 are required to take a seven-day leave of absence from school, the nation?s Ministry of Education said in a statement yesterday. Those who are unwell while in school and have traveled recently to affected countries will be isolated and taken by ambulance for medical treatment, the ministry said.

Three Australian children were among six newly confirmed swine flu cases in Indonesia on Sunday, bringing the country's total infections to eight.

Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said two boys aged 10 and 12 and a girl aged 14 had been on the same flight from Australia to the resort island of Bali as a 22-year-old Briton who had earlier tested positive for the A(H1N1) virus.

Three other new Indonesian cases included two relatives who had visited Singapore and a 22-year-old woman who visited Australia.

"All the six are doing fine," said Supari, adding that the Australians are now being isolated at Bali's Sanglah hospital and the Indonesians at a Jakarta hospital.

No cases had been confirmed in Indonesia until last Wednesday when the Briton and an Indonesian pilot tested positive. Both have since been discharged from hospital, Supari said.

Indonesia last week expressed concern that Australian tourists flocking to Bali's beaches are bringing swine flu into the country, which had so far avoided the worst of the pandemic.

Australia is the worst-hit country in the Asia-Pacific region with over 3,500 swine flu cases and five related deaths.

Supari said that so far there had been no cases of human-to-human transmission in Indonesia and that the country would remain vigilant.

Indonesian authorities earlier in the year increased the use of body temperature scanners at airports and imposed a ban on the import of live pigs and pork products in a bid to combat the disease, which has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization.

The A(H1N1) influenza, which emerged in Mexico in April, has killed over 260 people worldwide and infected nearly 60,000 people in over 100 countries.

The three others are still being intensively treated at the isolation rooms of Sanglah hospital. They are also waiting for the results of the final laboratory tests.

"The three patients have gained better conditions. Their body temperature has returned to normal and are no longer complaining flu pain. If the final lab tests indicated negative, and they have passed the infection period, they might be allowed to go home," Suartana Putra said.

Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said on Wednesday last week that besides Masoner, a pilot in Jakarta was also said to have contracted H1N1 strain of virus.
Besides Masoner, the miniser also said that swine flu had also infected a pilot identified as WA (37) from Jakarta.

WA visited Australia on June 14 and Hong Kong on June 18. On June 19, he suffered from fever and went to see a doctor at Sulianti Saroso hospital in Jakarta.

Masoner arrived in Bali on June 19 and with a health alert card was admitted to the Sanglah Hospital in Bali on June 20.(*)

16 Indonesian students infected with H1N1 virus

Sixteen Indonesian students who contracted the H1N1 virus during a study trip to Singapore this week are now under observation at hospitals on the island state.

Two others from the same group are also suspected of having been infected with the H1N1 virus, commonly but incorrectly referred to as swine flu.

"We had a group of 37 students studying in Singapore for two weeks and it has been confirmed that 16 of them are infected with the H1N1 virus, while two others are suspected of having the same virus," English First's general manager for Indonesia, Anders Bauer, told The Jakarta Post in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He said 14 of the infected students were being treated at KK Women's and Children's Hospital, along with the two other students suspected of carrying the virus. They are awaiting tests.

"The two other positive students are being treated at Changi Hospital," he said.

Bauer said the students departed from Indonesia on June 21 and were scheduled to return this weekend.

"The healthy students will return as scheduled this weekend, while the rest will remain in hospital until they are cleared by doctors," he said.

"Before the group departed on June 21, we already had a few students showing symptoms of colds and flues."

When the group leaders took them to hospital for a check-up on June 23, the doctors did not test them for H1N1 and so did not recommend they stay for observation.

When the students were brought back to the hospital a second time on June 27, the doctors confirmed they had the H1N1 virus.

He said the other students began showing symptoms on different days, with "the last ones today".

"So far their condition is good and they are on their way to recovery. Most of them do not have a fever anymore," Bauer said.

A spokesman for the Health Ministry, Lily Sulistiyowati, said she had not yet received information about the infected students.

"But if they really are positive, the procedure requires they be quarantined until their results are negative," she said.

Separately, it has been confirmed that a resident from Pondok Indah in South Jakarta is also infected with H1N1 and is being treated at Sulianti Saroso Hospital in North Jakarta.

Head of the Jakarta Health Agency Togi Asman said the 22-year-old woman was infected while she was abroad.

"She was studying in Australia and two days after returning to Indonesia on June 24 to spend time with her parents her condition worsened," Togi said to vivanews.com on Wednesday.

Every development that happens we will certainly report it," said Director General of Disease Prevention and Environmental Penyehatan (P2PL) MOH Adhitama Tjandra Yoga. In Sanglah Hospital, Bali suspect re-accept the new. Namely, Danish citizens aged 84 years.

Bird flu experts from Airlangga University requested that the government immediately map the H1N1 type of virus infecting the patient stated that the positive carry disease. Thus, it can be known whether the virus is on the patient from Indonesia was the country dituju or original infected in Indonesia alone.

"This is very important in mind. So, the MOH can map the types of the virus," said Prof. drh CA. Nidom, head of a bird flu laboratory Unair. He explains, there must be research on the virus-the virus that has been menginfeksi patients. "The virus that should have been reviewed again," he said. For example, a virus that the citizens of Australia who currently treated in the hospital Sanglah, Bali.

"The problem, if it does not matter how virusnya in Australia. But do it? What is feared that if the virus adapts to the patient," he said. Nidom also recommends that the virus also carried out investigations against the WNI currently treated in Singapore or other countries. "We have a sample that can be virusnya kinship virusnya," said Nidom. Because, he said, each virus has a different representative. There is a more violent or otherwise.

Therefore, he said, in the laboratory examination should be conducted. Efforts to prevent the leakage of the virus. Nidom explained, efforts to map out the relationship H1N1 virus at the same time to prevent the virus bergabungnya with the H5N1 virus. "We can do the simulation, the simulation since the beginning," says lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Unair it.

By doing the research, said Nidom, H1N1 can spread opportunity prevented. For, can be known types of viruses and how to address them. Moreover, the various parties about the possibility bersatunya virus H1N1 and H5N1. "That's reasonable, because the impact on health is quite dangerous," he said. (kit / jpnn)
