पुणे - 'स्वाइन फ्लू'मुळे तीन रुग्णांचा मृत्यू झाला असून, त्यात दोन बालकांचा समावेश असल्याचे मंगळवारी स्पष्ट झाले. शहरातील वेगवेगळ्या रुग्णालयांमध्ये चौदा रुग्ण कृत्रिम श्*वासोच्छ्वासावर आहेत. या रोगाने आतापर्यंत 264 जणांचा मृत्यू झाला आहे.

अथर्व श्*याम गोंटे (वय 2 वर्षे 10 महिने, रा. वडगाव मावळ) याचा शनिवारी (ता. 17) आदित्य बिर्ला रुग्णालयात मृत्यू झाला. तो दोन जुलैपासून आजारी होता. नांतुकिर्तनै कीट्टुनीया (वय 40, रा. वाकडेवाडी, शिवाजीनगर) यांचा ससून रुग्णालयात मृत्यू झाला. त्यांना 13 जुलैपासून ताप, खोकला आणि थंडी अशी "स्वाइन फ्लू'ची लक्षणे होती. त्यांना 17 जुलैला ससून रुग्णालयात दाखल करण्यात आले. तेथे त्यांचा मृत्यू झाला.

PUNE: The number of deaths in Pune due to the H1N1 influenza has seen a steady increase in July with three more persons being declared dead due to swine flu on Tuesday. With this, the number of casualties in July has gone up to 16, as against nine deaths throughout last month.

"There is definitely a spurt in swine flu cases in July. The average number of critically ill patients were not more than 10 per week during May and June. But there is a sudden rise in critical cases requiring artificial respiration. Last month, the mortality rate due to the H1N1 influenza vis-?-vis the number of severely positive cases had gone down. But in July, there is a surge in swine flu casualties as well," said an official of the state health services.

The H1N1 influenza has claimed 264 people in the city so far.

According to health officials, Atharva Shyam Gonte (3) of Wadgaon Maval died at the Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital on July 17. Atharva, who had been suffering from asthma-like illness, developed symptoms of swine flu from July 2. He was moved to the ABMH in critical condition on July 17 and died on the same day.

Another victim, Nantukirtania Nagendranath Kittunia (40) of Sangambadi Kothi in Wakdewadi, died at Sassoon hospital on July 17. Kittunia had the onset of illness from July 13. He was moved to Sassoon from KEM hospital on July 17, but died the same day.

Sakshi Sunil Padwal (7) of Savindane in Shirur taluka died at sassoon hospital on July 19. Sakshi, who was also suffering from malaria, had developed swine flu symptoms, like fever, cough and breathlessness, from July 8.

"The throat swab reports of all the three victims came on July 20, showing them positive for the virus," said an official.

"The rise in the number of deaths could largely be attributed to the fact that the flu has entered newer regions and has got entrenched in the rural areas," said Arun Jamkar, dean of Sassoon hospital.

"Initially, the spread of the contagion was among urbanites. Now, it has started taking roots in the rural parts of the state," said Sharad Agarkhedkar, president of the city unit of the Indian Medical Association.

Three more succumb to swine flu in Pune

Three persons, including a child, died due to swine flu in the last two days in the city, taking the death toll to 264, health officials said today.

The H1N1 infection which is on the rise once again, has claimed 53 victims since April this year here, which recorded the first swine flu casualty in the country on August 3, 2009, emerging as the epicentre of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, a meeting of civic health officials, private doctors and school managements held here deliberated on the need to enhance preventive measures to arrest the rising trend of positive cases of the influenza being registered since the onset of the monsoon last month.

A health department spokesperson said although swine flu vaccines are entering market, the state government was yet to issue an advisory on the recommended products including the intra-nasal spray introduced by the Serum Institute here.

केतूर मेहबूब शेख (वय 58, रा. सदर बाजार, सातारा) यांचा पुण्यातील नोबल रुग्णालयात मृत्यू झाला. त्यांना 10 जुलैपासून ताप, खोकला अशी "स्वाइन फ्लू'ची लक्षणे होती. त्यांना साताऱ्यातील एका रुग्णालयातून 20 जुलैला नोबल रुग्णालयात दाखल करण्यात आले. त्याच वेळी शेख यांना कृत्रिम श्*वासोच्छासावर ठेवण्यात आले होते. त्यांचा आज येथे मृत्यू झाला. रमेश महासुदगे (वय 45, रा. देहूरोड) यांचा आदित्य बिर्ला रुग्णालयात मृत्यू झाला. ते 17 जुलैपासून आजारी होते. त्यांचा आज रात्री साडेआठ वाजता रुग्णालयात मृत्यू झाला.

Over last two days, one person tested positive every hour, on an average

Two persons died of swine flu yesterday. While 58-year-old Koyana Society resident Katur Shakh died at Nobel Hospital, 45-year-old Dehurood resident, Ramesh Mhasudge, passed away at Aditya Birla Hospital.

With these two deaths, the total number of deaths due to swine flu since August 2009 has gone up to to 266.

Rise in cases
Meanwhile, doctors said that statistics showed that, on an average, one person in the city has tested positive for swine flu every hour over the last couple of days.

Besides, at least 500 people were admitted to various hospitals in the district every week for swine flu this month. That is almost four times the number in June.

"Yes, it is true that there is a spurt in H1N1 cases. Besides confirmed cases, the number of those admitted and on ventilator support has risen," said Dr CA Kante, assistant director of state health services and in-charge of swine flu control. "The virus thrives in this kind of climate and we can't stress more on the importance of maintaining hygiene and taking precaution."

Kante added that the number of positive cases this month could be higher than the corresponding number in the same month last year.

"Last year, we had to declare it as an epidemic and shut down the city for nearly a week. Though people have developed herd immunity this year, we cannot afford to be complacent and lax," said a senior health official requesting anonymity.

Herd immunity occurs when vaccination of part of the population protects unprotected individuals.

"Unlike last year, when we were caught unawares, this year we are better prepared," said Dr Sharad Agharkhedkar, president of Indian Medical Association's Pune chapter. "Preventive vaccines are available in the market and we advise people to take them. This can develop herd immunity against the virus and check its spread."

Agharkhedkar said 25 doctors from IMA had taken the vaccines and had had no major side-effects, so far.

Pune records highest number of H1N1 deaths

PUNE: As many as 99 people succumbed to the H1N1 influenza in the state against 1,174 positive cases since April. The mortality rate vis-?-vis fresh cases has been very high in Pune district as 53 people fell victim to the virus with 463 positive cases. Whereas Mumbai recorded 17 deaths against 436 positive cases during the same period.

"This is primarily because the H1N1 cases are now springing up from rural areas which remained unscathed last year. Besides, there is a sudden rise in critical cases requiring artificial respiration. In June, the mortality rate vis-?-vis the number of severely positive cases had gone down. However, with the rise in critically ill patients this month, more casualties were reported from Pune district," said state health officials.

Citing reasons for the high death rate, Arun Jamkar, dean of the Sassoon hospital, said: "It has been observed that other designated hospitals move or refer swine flu patients to the isolation ward of Sassoon when the patients' condition has worsened. Besides, we get patients from all over western Maharashra. This has also added to the high number of deaths in Pune district."

"Moreover, with the fall in temperature, there is a sudden rise in critical cases requiring artificial respiration this month," said a health official. "During May and June, the average number of critically ill patients were not more than 10 per week."

The country's preparedness to deal with a fresh wave of swine flu pandemic, that could be worse than before, was reviewed at a meeting presided over by the cabinet secretary in New Delhi recently. The meeting, which was attended by Union health ministry's top brass, including health secretary K Sujatha Rao and ICMR director-general V M Katoch, came to the conclusion that the virus had got entrenched in India and would soon replace the seasonal influenza strain to become the dominant virus causing fever, cough and cold. If not treated early with Tamilfu people are more prone to dye of it than the seasonal bug.

Swine flu kills one in Aurangabad

Aurangabad, Jul 24 : One person has succumbed to dreaded swinflu and other is battling for life at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here.


GMCH Dean S D Dalvi told UNI that Padmanath Pankade (40) a resident of Gangapur who had been tested positive for swine flu died yesterday, while Zakhir Khan Suleman Khan (50) hailing from Sillod was in critical condition. Both were tested positive for swine flu by the National Institute of Virology,.

The district was under grip of Swine flu in July and August last year with more than 100 people losing their lives. However, the intensity of the decease reduced after February this year, Dr Dalvi said.

Meanwhile, the state health department provided anti-swine flu vaccines to GMCH and other primary health centers in the entire district. The vaccines were provided to the doctors treating the swine flu patients, he added.

कोल्हापूर - 'स्वाइन फ्लू'ने आज आणखी एका रुग्णाचा खासगी रुग्णालयात मृत्यू झाला. गेल्या चार दिवसांतील हा तिसरा मृत्यू असून आणखी एक रुग्ण गंभीर असून त्याच्यावर एका खासगी रुग्णालयात उपचार सुरू आहेत. दादासाहेब राजाराम पाटील (वय 43, रा. अर्जुनवाडा, ता. कागल) असे काल रात्री मरण पावलेल्या रुग्णाचे नाव आहे.

श्री. पाटील यांना स्वाइन फ्लूची लागण झाल्याने 20 जुलैला मंगळवार पेठेतील एका खासगी रुग्णालयात उपाचारासाठी दाखल केले होते. त्याच दिवशी त्यांच्या रक्ताचे नमुने तपासणीसाठी पाठवले होते. 24 जुलैला त्यांना स्वाइन फ्लू झाल्याचा अहवाल प्राप्त झाला. काल सकाळपासून त्यांची प्रकृती गंभीर बनली. त्यांना कृत्रिम श्*वासोच्छ्वास देण्यात आला होता; पण त्याचा फारसा उपयोग झाला नाही आणि त्यांचा मृत्यू झाला.

गेल्या चार दिवसांतील "स्वाइन फ्लू'चा तिसरा बळी आहे. गुरुवारी एक व शुक्रवारी एक असा दोघांचा स्वाइनने मृत्यू झाला आहे. आणखी सात रुग्णांवर सीपीआर व खासगी रुग्णालयात उपचार सुरू असून यापैकी एकाची प्रकृती चिंताजनक आहे. त्यांना एका खासगी रुग्णालयात कृत्रिम श्*वासोच्छ्वासावर ठेवण्यात आले आहे. तीन रुग्णांचे नमुने तपासणीसाठी पाठवण्यात आले असून त्यांचा अहवाल अद्याप प्राप्त झालेला नाही.

स्वाइन फ्लूने मरण पावलेल्या श्री. पाटील यांच्याशी संपर्क आलेल्या त्यांच्या कुटुंबातील इतर सदस्यांवर अर्जुनवाडा येथील प्राथमिक आरोग्य केंद्रात प्रथमोपचार सुरू आहेत. आरोग्य विभागामार्फत योग्य ती खबरदारी घेण्यात येत असल्याचे जिल्हा शल्य चिकित्सक डॉ. रवींद्र निट्टूरकर यांनी सांगितले.

Four more H1N1 deaths in Pune

As many as four H1N1 deaths over the weekend, all from outskirts such as Haveli, Shirur, Baramati and Ahmednagar, have taken the swine flu toll in the district to 62 since April. Doctors at the health department said the victims were given Tamiflu only on day four or five of fever, pointing at a delay in treatment. District health officials too are advocating early treatment to avoid fatalities.


On Sunday, 34-year-old Shehnaaz Rashid Shaikh from Ahmednagar succumbed to the H1N1 virus. She was suffering from fever, cough and sore throat and had blood pressure problems. She was ailing from July 18 but Tamiflu was administered only from July 23, after she was admitted to Sassoon General Hospital the previous day.


Jayashree Jadhav (33) of Baramati was ailing from fever, cough and similar symptoms from July 20. Also suffering from blood pressure problems, Jadhav was brought to Sassoon Hospital on July 23 and Tamiflu was started. She died on Sunday.

On Saturday, Manisha Yeshwant (25) of Shirur, who was in eight months pregnant, died due to complications. She was brought to Sassoon Hospital on July 22 though swine flu symptoms had showed up on July 14. Fifty-year-old Hausabai Borker succumbed to the virus at Y C M Hospital on Saturday.



A total of 273 deaths have been registered in the district since April 2009.
