Re: Approximately 75 deaths due to mystery fever in Lucknow district, Uttar Pradesh - possibly dengue
It is not clear what is going on here, but fever deaths seem to be picking up, and the description of the epidemiology sure sounds like it is waterborne (typhoid? leptospirosis? some type of dysentery?).
This is the first mention of alcohol poisoning here, and the first respiratory death.
LUCKNOW: Even as three more deaths were reported from Khadra on Wednesday, taking the toll to 42, the health department restarted its health camp in the locality to provide on the spot treatment to patients. While locals said the three persons who died were suffering from high fever and complained of nausea, the officials said that cause of death in none of them was found to be dengue or other mosquito borne disease.
Those who died included Barati Lal (50), Ram Chandra (40) and Kishori (65). Chief medical officer Dr AK Shukla said Barati Lal was an alcoholic and lived alone in a hut on the Gomti bank. "He could have died due to cold," he said. Ram Chandra was admitted at Balrampur hospital following complaint of breathlessness where he died in the wee hours. Dr Shukla said Ram Chandra too was an alcoholic. Kishori died due to prolonged illness and old age, he said.
Khadra residents, however, blamed unhygienic conditions for deaths. Ram Sevak, a local, said, "Even if we accept that 20% deaths were due to alcohol, still 30 people with dengue symptoms have died in last one month. The tests conducted at CSM Medical University and SGPGI as well as by the Central government team have confirmed dengue. Hundreds, including women and children, who do not drink, were found to be suffering from fever during this period."
