Title : Nine deaths due to mystery fever in Lucknow district, Uttar Pradesh.
Description : AT LEAST nine people died of a mysterious fever in Lucknow on Saturday. A team of doctors from the health department has reached Khadra on the outskirts of Lucknow on Sunday but hasn?t been able to ascertain what has caused the outbreak.Twenty- two- year- old Sanjeet Kumar, who had been suffering from mild fever for the past three days, was the first casualty. He died about 5 pm at his residence in Roopnagar colony, Khadra. Subsequently, Ganesh Rajmishtri ( 28), Babu Nishad ( 40), Babu Singh ( 41), Naeem Khan ( 26), Shyamlal Kashyap ( 56), Raju Singh ( 25), Ram Dulari ( 60) and Sanjeeta ( 5), who were also suffering from fever, died. The majority of victims had been undergoing treatment at government hospitals.Chief medical officer A. K. Shukla confirmed the deaths. He said Naeem had been suffering from malarial fever, while Babu and Sanjeet died because of wrong treatment. ? Both were suffering from a common form of viral fever but the line of medication administered to them was wrong. We are trying to find out the reasons behind the death of the other patients as well. It is a serious lapse. We have deployed a team of doctors there to diagnose all the residents who were down with fever,? Dr Shukla said. However, he has also said that quacks were to blame for complicating the cases. ? There are two private clinics in Khadra from where some people had taken medicines. These clinics are run by quacks. We are trying to identify them. The police have been informed. They will be arrested and their clinics sealed,? he said. But Sanjeet?s father Munna Lal claimed that even though most of the patients were undergoing treatment at the Swami Vivekanand hospital or the Civil Hospital, the health department was unnecessarily harassing the registered medical practitioners of the area.? At least 200 people are suffering from fever in Khadra. Registered medical practitioners have treated many of them. They are within our reach,? he said. Munna said the residents had also informed the health department, the municipal corporation and the district administration about the outbreak. According to him, more than 30 locals had died in the past two weeks. The team of doctors reached the area only on Sunday though. ? They claimed Naeem died of malaria. But we know he had no symptom of the disease and the health department has no facility to diagnose the other diseased,? Munna added.

The thread above indicates an ongoing "mystery disease" outbreak in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, with more than 300 undiagnosed fatalities in the past two months, and no indication as to symptoms, other than "fever".

It looks like this disease has spread to Lucknow. This is a VERY BAD SIGN.

Yikes. It is clear that the local officials do not have the ability to diagnose this outbreak. It is long past time to send in international help.

"Fever" could be anything. There is no mention of hemorrhaging. We will have to see what else we can find.

Agreed. I don't even begin to have a clue what this is, but it has gone on across Uttar Pradesh for 2+ months with a total death toll in the thousands, and they have not been able to diagnose it.

I'm not even sure where the mention of hemorrhaging came from here...

This is looking somewhat different than the outbreak in Kanpur and may be unrelated. At least we have a symptomatic description this time.

?Mystery fever' claims 15 lives in Lucknow

                            Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW: With the number of deaths in a single locality of Lucknow on account of a ?mystery fever? climbing to 15 following the death of one more person on Tuesday and cases of dengue in Uttar Pradesh also on the rise, Chief Secretary A. K. Gupta has called a meeting of heath officials here on Wednesday to review the situation.
Government hospitals and private nursing homes in the State are finding it difficult to meet the health requirements of the dengue patients, particularly the availability of platelets and plasma. Official sources said the meeting is likely to fix norms for the nursing homes in respect of the money that is being charged from the patients for treatment, which includes the cost of platelets and plasma.

The ?mystery fever? outbreak was detected in the Khadra locality of Lucknow this past Saturday when six persons died following complaints of nausea and dysentery. Eight more died on Sunday and Monday and another passed away on Tuesday. At the outset, the health authorities attributed the deaths to malaria, but the disease has not been confirmed.

While the Zonal Health Officer of Lucknow Nagar Nigam, S.C. Dubey, was suspended by the government for dereliction of duty as the civic conditions in Khadra were pathetic, a two-member committee has been constituted by the Director-General of Medical and Health Services, S.P. Ram, for conducting an inquiry into the causes of the deaths.

In what was seen as passing the buck, the Chief Medical Officer of Lucknow, A.K. Shukla, dashed off a letter to D-G Health on Monday in which he attributed the deaths in Khadra, a backward locality on the banks of the Gomti, to ?drowning?, ?heart attacks? and ?vomiting and diarrhoea?. Dr. Shukla was unavailable for comment.

Lucknow also tops in the number of dengue cases reported so far in the State. Of over 300 dengue cases, the State capital alone accounts for 213 cases. Dengue cases have also been reported from Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Agra, Aligarh, Gorakhpur, Budaun, Sitapur, Kanpur, Allahabad and Bareilly. Three deaths due to dengue have been officially reported.

This article suggests that this too may be a compound outbreak, with gastro and possible H1N1 ("infection in stomach and lungs") involved as well. Apparently, the total denominator here is very high, reducing the apparent CFR.

LUCKNOW: Even as three more deaths due to `viral' fever were reported in the city on Tuesday, the post-monsoon viral diseases are now acquiring `epidemic' proportions.

Viral fever claimed lives of Mukesh (25), Munni (33) and Montu (28), all from Khadra and adjoining areas, in past 24 hours
. Rajendra Singh (23), a police constable, died in SGPGI due to dengue. He was posted in Gorakhpur and was referred to Lucknow when his condition deteriorated.

While `viral' fever has claimed over 23 lives so far, over eight persons have died due to dengue and 10 due to malaria in past two months.

With over 400-500 cases being reported daily, doctors in out patient door (OPDs)s in prominent hospitals, both government and private, are working in double shifts. The cases include viral fever, dengue, malaria, encephalitis, diarrhoea among others. Of the total cases reported, nearly 30% are being hospitalised. As a result, over 1500 beds earmarked for such cases in the five major hospitals in the government sectors and five private ones are packed beyond capacity.

But panic-struck people can be seen requesting, using influence, begging and even intimidating doctors for hospitalisation of their kin suffering from fever. While huge queues outside pathologies have become a routine, blood banks are witnessing a mad rush for platelets.

A quick survey of the three government hospitals and two government-aided medical education and health institutions has revealed that on an average 1000 patients are being examined in OPDs daily and around 300 are being admitted in the hospitals.

The medicine department of the Chhatrapati Shahuji Medical University (CSMMU) is seeing 200-250 patients daily in OPDs while around 40 cases of viral fever, dengue and malaria are being admitted. "The medicine department has 250 beds and all are occupied," said head of the medicine department, Prof AK Vaish. In paediatrics ward, two patients are under treatment on single bed. Chief medical superintendent of CSMMU, Prof SN Shankhwar said, "We try to accommodate as many patients as possible. Even stretchers are being used in case beds are not available".

The situation was no different in the Balrampur hospital where patients were seen lying on the benches meant for attendants. "Over 200 patients are being examined in the OPDs daily and number of admissions are over 100. We have separate beds with mosquito nets for dengue patients and children. The situation is almost like disaster management," said chief medical superintendent, Balrampur hospital, Dr I Saran.

In SPM Civil hospital, daily turnout of the patients of viral diseases in OPDs is over 200. "We admit 70-80 patients daily, of whom majority are viral cases," said chief medical superintendent, Civil hospital, Dr AK Chawla.

Medical superintendent, RML Hospital, Dr ML Bhargava said in view of rush of viral cases, we have to keep discharging patients as soon as they show marginal improvement to make space for the steady inflow of the critical cases requiring immediate and emergency attention.

The SGPGI and CSMMU are also receiving complicated and critical cases from across the state. Only these two institutions in the government sector have blood banks. The CSMMU blood bank is selling over 200 platelet units daily.

Doctors said virus causing normal fever in post-monsoon season seems to have mutated this year. As a result, the fever which earlier used to subdue in seven to eight days, is taking around 18 days this time [What virus has mutated? No "virus" has been identified. - alert].

In some cases, dengue tests are negative but the fever shows dengue like symptoms. A new feature of the fever is infection in stomach and lungs. Also, many deaths have occurred due to wrong diagnosis.

Doctors, however, are unanimous that the `epidemic like situation this year' has developed due to poor sanitation services of the civic authorities besides digging of roads for laying sewer lines.
