Comment: Given the lack of detailed reporting from these states, the true burden of encephalitis in these states is hard to assess.

On July 14th, Assam reported "While 20 people have died of JE, AES has claimed 48 lives. The total number of confirmed JE and AES cases is 128 and 224 respectively this year." I am uncertain as to whether or not the JE figures are also included in the total - i.e whether the full burden is 48 deaths or 68 deaths. Either way, it would seem that confirmed JE deaths should be multiplied by 2 or 3 to estimate the true burden. Since that time, I have not found a single report that includes the JE/AES breakdown. the reported figure for JE deaths rose from 20 -> 37 -> 39 -> 40 (on 7/19) -> 52 (7/23) -> 66 (7/25) -> 73 (7/28). It would seem that these figures are confirmed JE only. It is therefore likely that the figure of 95 deaths quoted in the article above also represents JE only. The true number of fatalities may be double this figure.

The reporting from West Bengal is mostly from NBMCH mostly giving a tally of fatalities in the 50s. The report above states 40 deaths in July alone in that hospital. However fatalities have also occurred outside of that hospital. Also, the NVBDCP had reported 417 cases of AES with 60 fatalities to May 31st. By my current tally, the number of AES deaths in WB this year is at least 102, possibly more. - Ro
