AASU demands inquiry into implementation of JE vaccination drive in Darrang

      From our Correspondent

      MANGALDAI, August 8:
      ...

In a statement issued by Khanindra Rajbomgshi, president and Manashjyoti Baruah, secretary of the local AASU unit here recently, they alleged that due to the lack of foresightedness of the such higher officials the disease had already claimed seven lives including three minors in the district while more than 15 others were fighting for survival in different hospitals in the State capital city. They pointed out that the negligence of the higher authority towards the district was evident from the fact that Darrang district, which last year recorded 14 JE deaths and six other due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), managed to get only Rs 50,000 to undertake preventive measures and that too in the month of July when the disease had already turned serious in June.

It has been demanded before the government to make immediate necessary arrangement to carry out Elisa Test to detect presence of JE virus in blood in all the Primary Health Centres of the district with a well equipped centre in the Civil Hospital to treat JE positive patients. The AASU leaders have also expressed doubt about the effective implementation of JE vaccination drives in the district separately for children and adult under 60 years of age against the success as claimed by the Health Department. They demanded a high-level inquiry into the claim of the District Health Department which in paper has shown an achievement of 2.74 lakh against the target population of 3.20 lakh in case of children below 15 years of age while in adult vaccination the average success rate is 84 per cent against the target population coverage of 4.80 lakh.
