Portugal now has 15 outbreaks of bird flu detected, after another one was confirmed in A-dos-Cunhados and Macieira, Torres Vedras, the fourth case in this parish since the beginning of the month, announced the DGAV.

“In Portugal, the first outbreak was detected on November 30, 2021 in a domestic capoeira in the municipality of Palmela. Since then, 15 outbreaks of HPAI [high pathogenic avian influenza] of the H5N1 subtype have already been confirmed in our country”, reads the latest public notice issued by the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV).
Of the total, 11 outbreaks concern domestic birds, including commercial farms for turkeys, chickens, ducks and a private collection of domestic poultry and the remaining four outbreaks cover wild birds.
So far, bird flu has been detected in the districts of Leiria, Lisbon, Santarém, Setúbal and Beja.
The latest outbreak was confirmed on Saturday, in a breeding and rearing farm for breeding ducks in the parish of A-dos-Cunhados and Macieira, in the municipality of Torres Vedras....

Portugal now has 20 outbreaks of bird flu, after a new infection was confirmed, on a home farm in Faro, announced the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV).

“On March 15 [Tuesday] a new outbreak of infection with avian influenza (AG) virus was confirmed in a home farm, in the parish of Azinhal, municipality of Castro Marim, district of Faro”, reads a note released by DGAV.
This brings the number of confirmed outbreaks in Portugal to 20 and at least close to 230,000 animals have already been slaughtered due to this...

Avian flu in Portugal: the slaughter of more than 200 thousand birds can lead to a drop in production
In the 20 outbreaks registered so far, 99.8% of the affected birds are commercial production. In addition to the damage inherent to the slaughter, the farms are inactive for 30 days after disinfection. If the trend continues, there may be a drop in domestic production.

The last time Portugal recorded cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (a subtype that causes severe clinical manifestations and/or high mortality) was in January 2017, in a heron . The wild bird was found dead in the Ludo area, in Loulé, and was infected with the H5N8 subtype virus. Four years later, the disease returned to the country and was already present in seven districts, but so far only the H5N1 subtype has been registered...
