In the fattening turkey establishment, 6361 turkeys for slaughter were kept in 3 aviaries. On 15 December the owner informed about the mass mortality of turkeys – after the night approximately 2300 turkeys were found dead, the rest with clinical symptoms such as diarrhea, weakness, and neurological symptoms. On the same day, official veterinarians visited the farm, and samples of the dead turkeys were collected from all aviaries for passive surveillance for avian influenza and sent to the National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute (National Reference Laboratory) for avian influenza testing. Temporary restrictions on the farm were imposed immediately until the laboratory results were available. Highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed in all samples and the subtype H5N1 was detected.
