    29-12-2023,8:05 Update: 29-12-2023,6:13

    The Chief Veterinary Officer informs about the detection of 68 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) of the H5N1 subtype in poultry in 2023.

    Outbreak 68/2023 was confirmed based on the results of laboratory tests on December 27, 2023 received from the National Veterinary Institute - National Research Institute (PIWet - PIB) in Puławy.

    HPAI outbreak No. 68 was detected on a commercial farm keeping turkeys for slaughter located in the town of Prochowice in the Prochowice commune in the Legnica poviat in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.

    The herd in which the HPAI subtype H5N1 virus was detected included 32,989 turkeys for fattening.

    The Veterinary Inspection implements all disease control measures in connection with the detection of an HPAI outbreak on a farm in accordance with the procedures resulting from national and EU law.

    In the territory of the Republic of Poland, from January 1 to December 29, 2023, 68 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry, 140 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in wild birds and 1 outbreak in captive birds were detected, in which December this year it was found:

    6 outbreaks in poultry in the province. Lower Silesia, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Masovian and West Pomeranian;
    2 outbreaks in wild birds in the province. Kuyavian-Pomeranian and Podkarpackie.

    Information on the current epizootic situation regarding avian influenza in Poland and other EU Member States is published on the website of the Chief Veterinary Inspectorate HERE

    In the fattening turkey establishment, 6361 turkeys for slaughter were kept in 3 aviaries. On 15 December the owner informed about the mass mortality of turkeys – after the night approximately 2300 turkeys were found dead, the rest with clinical symptoms such as diarrhea, weakness, and neurological symptoms. On the same day, official veterinarians visited the farm, and samples of the dead turkeys were collected from all aviaries for passive surveillance for avian influenza and sent to the National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute (National Reference Laboratory) for avian influenza testing. Temporary restrictions on the farm were imposed immediately until the laboratory results were available. Highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed in all samples and the subtype H5N1 was detected.
