AI suspicion in the Vechta district confirmed

On Christmas Day, the avian influenza virus H5N1 was detected in a turkey farm in the municipality of Goldenstedt in the Vechta district. The state laboratory of LAVES (Lower Saxony) has confirmed the AI evidence.

There are around 12,000 turkey roosters that are around 18 weeks old. The affected company is on the edge of the existing surveillance zones for the AI outbreaks in Vechta-Holzhausen and Vechta-Telbrake. The district will set up a protection zone with a radius of at least 3 km and a surveillance zone with a radius of at least 10 km around the suspected population. The killing and evacuation of the animal population was ordered.
Extended restriction areas for avian influenza

The new restriction areas go into the districts of Diepholz and Oldenburg, so it can be assumed that in the district of Diepholz the AI protection zone will extend into the integrated community of Barnstorf. In addition, there will be a surveillance zone in the municipality of Barnstorf and in the area of the town of Twistringen.

In the district of Oldenburg, areas of the combined community of Harpstedt and the city of Wildeshausen are affected. An AI surveillance zone can be expected in these areas.

Once again, animals in a farm in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were infected with avian influenza. The pathogen was found in a turkey farm in Dersekow in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district on Wednesday. All animals in the affected herds must now be killed to prevent further spread, as the Ministry of Agriculture announced.

Dersekow / Greifswald - The company keeps around 32,000 animals. The Friedrich Löffler Institute (FLI) in Greifswald announced on Thursday: “We are currently experiencing the strongest avian influenza epidemic in Germany and Europe”.

According to the ministry, there have been eight avian influenza outbreaks in the northeast. "Even if we expected the situation to worsen and the employees in animal disease control are doing an excellent job, every new case hits us hard," said Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus (SPD).

Another case of avian influenza occurred in a livestock population in Brandenburg. The H5N1 pathogen was detected in a company in Märkisch-Oderland by the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), as the consumer protection ministry announced on Friday.

According to the information, the district's veterinary office initiated all necessary measures. This included the establishment of a protection zone within a three-kilometer radius and a surveillance zone within a ten-kilometer radius of the outbreak population. The poultry is killed and disposed of by order of the veterinary office. The poultry farmers affected are informed by the district about the necessary measures in these areas.

The cause of the infection is still unclear, said consumer protection minister Ursula Nonnemacher (Greens). Necessary investigations have been initiated. "Since the epidemic increased again in wild birds and also in poultry populations in neighboring federal states and throughout Europe in October, we have been on the alert," said the minister.

According to the ministry, the FLI assesses the risk of further entries as high, the institute had warned of a dramatic development in Germany and Europe in this winter half-year.

This autumn and winter, the avian influenza virus had so far been detected in wild birds and in two small populations in Brandenburg. Last autumn and winter there was already one of the most serious infections in avian influenza. In Brandenburg, eleven outbreaks were recorded in poultry populations, a total of around 159,000 animals had to be killed.

Avian influenza, also known colloquially as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease for poultry and other birds. According to the ministry, it can quickly reach epidemic proportions in poultry flocks. The H5N8 bird flu virus is considered to be harmless to humans
