Earlier this week, the Åland regional government issued a warning to the islands' residents: Do not touch dead birds. The reason was that bird flu was found in dead eiders.
In June, for the first time, mass death among birds was confirmed in Finland. That after a shock of dead seagulls was found in Salo. Down on the continent, similar cases of mass death have been confirmed in the spring.
Another 100 or so laughing gulls and terns were found dead near Tavastehus on 25 June. The bird carcasses, both young and adult individuals, have been collected, tested and destroyed.
According to the Swedish Food Agency, the cause of death is highly pathogenic, i.e. very disease-causing, bird flu of the H5N1 type. At the same time, the authority reminds of the importance of infection protection. The disease spreads easily between birds and caution must be observed, reads the order...

Bird flu caused a mass death of laughing gulls in Salo

    Food Agency

In Salo, the highly pathogenic bird flu of the H5N1 type has been confirmed as the cause of death of 20 laughing gulls. Laughing gulls were found on the same beach in Haliko on June 13, and the local surveillance veterinarian submitted the carcasses to the Food Agency for examination as suspected bird flu.
One of the logs had neurological symptoms and was euthanized on the spot. In the Food Agency's investigations, avian influenza was found in bird tissue samples.
This is the first mass death of wild seagulls caused by bird flu in Finland, which has occurred this spring in various parts of Europe. At the end of May, a sparrow hawk found in Hollola, which died in the Heinola bird sanctuary, was also found to have highly pathogenic avian influenza.
