Bird flu caused a mass death of laughing gulls in Salo

    Food Agency

In Salo, the highly pathogenic bird flu of the H5N1 type has been confirmed as the cause of death of 20 laughing gulls. Laughing gulls were found on the same beach in Haliko on June 13, and the local surveillance veterinarian submitted the carcasses to the Food Agency for examination as suspected bird flu.
One of the logs had neurological symptoms and was euthanized on the spot. In the Food Agency's investigations, avian influenza was found in bird tissue samples.
This is the first mass death of wild seagulls caused by bird flu in Finland, which has occurred this spring in various parts of Europe. At the end of May, a sparrow hawk found in Hollola, which died in the Heinola bird sanctuary, was also found to have highly pathogenic avian influenza.

Infectious version of bird flu in Finland
During the summer, laughing gulls, terns and eiders have been found dead - they have died of the contagious bird flu variant.

        Dan Pettersson
        07.07.2023 09:42 UPDATED 07.07.2023 10:14

Earlier this week, the Åland regional government issued a warning to the islands' residents: Do not touch dead birds. The reason was that bird flu was found in dead eiders.
In June, for the first time, mass death among birds was confirmed in Finland. That after a shock of dead seagulls was found in Salo. Down on the continent, similar cases of mass death have been confirmed in the spring.
Another 100 or so laughing gulls and terns were found dead near Tavastehus on 25 June. The bird carcasses, both young and adult individuals, have been collected, tested and destroyed.
According to the Swedish Food Agency, the cause of death is highly pathogenic, i.e. very disease-causing, bird flu of the H5N1 type. At the same time, the authority reminds of the importance of infection protection. The disease spreads easily between birds and caution must be observed, reads the order...

Bird flu was confirmed as the cause of Kokkola's seagull deaths

Bird flu has been confirmed as the cause of the mass deaths of seagulls found in Kokkola in Central Ostrobothnia. According to the announcement of the city of Kokkola, it is highly pathogenic bird flu H5N1.

The same disease has caused several mass deaths of wild birds in Finland during the current year. In addition, infections have been found in blue foxes and minks in a total of five fur farms in Southern and Central Ostrobothnia.

A mass death of seagulls was found in Ullavanjärvi in Kokkola during the last two weeks. According to the city, there are probably hundreds of dead seagulls.

Tartuntoja on löytynyt siniketuilta ja minkeiltä yhteensä viideltä turkistarhalta Etelä- ja Keski-Pohjanmaalla.

The mass deaths of birds overcrowded the Food Agency's laboratory so that the agency no longer automatically examines dead seagulls

Bird flu is no longer guaranteed if the bird's Founding Place is close to the former locations. New mass deaths have been observed, for example, in South Ostrobothnia.

The Food Agency's laboratory in Helsinki is so overcrowded that the agency no longer examines all dead seagulls, but the assumption is that the cause of death of laughing seagulls is bird flu.

Decisions not to investigate are always made on a case-by-case basis together with the local authorities.

Unit manager Sirpa Kiviruusu from the Food Agency points out that new samples are taken from each infectious disease zone if dead birds are found in new places or new bird species.

                  - If the area is close enough to the previous discovery, you don't necessarily want new samples, Kiviruusu says.

                  - We thought about what is a sufficient number to get information about the country's disease situation and, on the one hand, the development of the situation.

Most of the sick birds have been laughing gulls so far. Bird flu has also been found in small amounts in sparrow hawks, terns, ospreys and sea eagles. The most recent findings are of the gray gull, Canadian goose, and egret.

Dead birds were found in Evijärvi and Ylistaro

A new large deposit of dead laughing gulls was found in Evijärvi in South Ostrobothnia last weekend. About a hundred birds were collected from the northern part of the lake, near Inankylä.

In the past, dead birds have been found in Evijärvi's Särkikylä.

In addition, twenty dead seagulls were recovered over the weekend from Seinäjoki's Ylistaro near Malkakoski's beach. The Southern Ostrobothnia rescue service went to pick up the birds from the roach by boat.

Burial remains the responsibility of the municipality

Seinäjoki's director of environmental health, Virpi Ala-Risku , says that the Food Agency has been considerably burdened by the sampling. Therefore, the samples from Evijärvi and Malkakoski were not wanted as an additional load either.

However, the citizens of the municipality still have to notify environmental health care if, for example, tens of dead birds are found in the region. There is no need to report an individual bird and you can bury the carcass yourself, as long as you wear gloves and possibly a respirator.

                  - If you can, you should use a table or other longer aid to avoid getting infected yourself, advises Ala-Risku.

About a hundred dead birds found in Evijärvi have already been buried. Employees of Evijärvi municipality took care of the burial.

                  - If bird deaths increase, it is possible to use a collection container there, Ala-Risku says.

Findings of dead birds do not prevent swimming or fishing in the lake. There were still birds in poor condition in Evijärvi, so the situation is being monitored.

Lintuinfluenssaa ei enää varmisteta, jos linnun löytöpaikka on entisten paikkojen lähellä. Uusia joukkokuolemia on havaittu muun muassa Etelä-Pohjanmaalla.

Bird flu detected in a wild bird in Mikkeli

                          21/08/2023

A laughing gull that died of bird flu has been found in Mikkeli. The bird was found on the roof of the main library in the city of Mikkeli, and the samples were sent to the Food Agency for examination on August 10, 2023. On Monday afternoon, August 21, 2023, it was confirmed that it is a highly pathogenic H5N1 virus.

This is the first case in Eastern Finland. So far, bird flu has been detected primarily in Western Finland in the Ostrobothnia region, in Päijät-Hämee in Lahti and Hämeenlinna, and in the north at the height of Rovaniemi. About a thousand laughing seagulls have died in Lahti, and there have been individual seagulls that have died of avian flu elsewhere as well. In addition, bird flu has been found in, among other things, sea eagles, gray gulls, Canada geese and eiders, as well as occasional terns in Finland.

There were four dead laughing gulls on the roof of Mikkeli's main library, but only one of them could be examined.

Since avian influenza has been found in wild birds, no restriction zones are imposed in the area, and the outdoor keeping of poultry is not prohibited.

The type of virus found does not easily infect humans.

The Food Agency recommends that waterfowl should not be hunted in the vicinity where bird flu has occurred. Since the dead laughing seagull was found on the roof of Mikkeli's main library, according to the regional veterinarian of the Eastern Finland Regional Administration, the discovery does not cause recommendations for restrictions on waterfowl hunting, because there is no hunting in the Urban Area.

Mikkeli region's environmental services hopes that birds found dead will be reported to control veterinarians or city veterinarians. Dead birds should not be touched without protection.

The management team for disruption situations monitors the situation and the management team gives instructions if necessary.
