  • Sweden detects H5N8 in wild birds, poultry

    Bird flu outbreak hits Sweden

    nov 23 2016

Bird flu has broken out at two places in southern Sweden, analysts at the National Veterinary Institute (SVA) report.

News agency TT reports that one infection case involves a wild bird found in the municipality of Vellinge in Sk?ne which has been confirmed as having the bird flu strain H5N8. The second case involves an egg-laying hen flock outside Helsingborg.
Earlier this week, Sweden raised its alert level for poultry to the second highest after an outbreak of bird flu in neighbouring Denmark.

Further cases of bird flu in wild birds have been found in the outbreak earlier hit both wild and domestic birds in Sweden. Two herring gulls found dead on November 23 in Degerhamn, Kalmar, had bird flu according to the analysis made at the National Veterinary Institute (SVA). Previously comes to poultry in the country should be kept indoors to prevent domestic poultry flocks infected by bird flu.

      - This is something we unfortunately have expected that bird flu will continue to spread, and even hit new bird species. Previously a pinch, an eagle, two headed gulls and a crow found with bird flu, in addition to the poultry population outside Helsingborg, says Karl St?hl, Assistant statsepizootolog at SVA.

Bird flu of this type has never contaminated in man, but in the fall occurred among both wild and domestic birds in many parts of Europe and other parts of the world.

All that keeps birds need to remain vigilant to signs of disease in birds and be very careful about infection control in their herds.

Bird flu in backyard holding on Ut?

          dec 21 2016

A new case of bird flu has been found in a small backyard holding on Ut? in the Stockholm archipelago. The birds in the affected hobby flock will be culled. The holding is blocked and must be cleaned up.

In the whole of Sweden the level 2 because of the bird flu H5N8. The level means that all the poultry to keep them indoors, which is the safest way to protect them from contracting the virus, according to the National Veterinary Institute.

          "Clear risk"

          - H5N8 has now been detected in 15 countries in the EU, among both wild birds such as poultry. We see an extensive spread of infection among wild birds in Sweden and the risk of further domestic birds affected are obviously if pet owners take action to protect them, says Karl St?hl, Assistant statsepizootolog at SVA, in a press release.

          Several previous cases

Previously, SVA found bird flu in hens crew outside Helsingborg and among wild birds in Sk?ne, Kalmar and ?land and Gotland.
Seven dead sea eagles in Kalmar suspected of having bird flu had died of other causes.
Avian influenza H5N8 type has never infected humans.
