CHOLERA
---------------- EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION AS OF APRIL 27, 2024.
Already 63 cases of death. This is very worrying! Comoros, we are a country with a small number of inhabitants. Let's not cross our fingers!
Cholera, this highly contagious and deadly disease, will soon have to pack up to go to its place of departure.
For this, the Ministry of Health and its various partners, mobilized to raise awareness, recommend that the entire Comorian population continue to regularly respect prevention measures.
The updated assessment by the epidemic surveillance unit worries health and political authorities. Tuesday April 30 was marked by the death of ten people on the island of Anjouan, the highest death toll recorded since February 4, the date on which cholera was officially declared in the Comoros. The country must also face a tropical storm in the coming days.

The cholera epidemic is getting worse in Anjouan
Cholera is claiming victims in the Comoros. The latest epidemiological bulletin reports 82 deaths across the archipelago. We learned of “ 247 new cases of cholera, 380 new recoveries, 04 new deaths ” in the single day of Wednesday, May 1 , after the terrible toll of ten deaths recorded on Tuesday, April 30 on the island of Anjouan, which accounts for the highest number of casualties, 63 in total, out of 82 deaths. There were around fifteen victims in Grande-Comore and 4 in Mohéli.
3,950 cases recorded since February 4
“ Since the start of the fight against the cholera epidemic, the country recorded the largest peak of the disease in week S15 of the year 2024 with 409 cases of the disease and 15 community deaths. This peak could be linked to the mobility of the population, without respect for control measures at the end of the month of Ramadan and the day of the Eid festival, especially on the island of Ndzuwani ", (Anjouan) , explains a detailed note from the Ministry of Health.
The Comorian authorities have mobilized teams to fight the disease which seem to limit the damage since a significant number of cases have been treated, i.e. 3,620 people cured out of a total of 3,950 cases recorded in the different health districts since February 4, the date when cholera was officially declared in the Comoros. A few days ago, the authorities suggested reinforced restrictive measures “ by May 10 if the situation does not stabilize ”.
The unit in charge of anti-cholera surveillance notes " the efforts made" to contain the epidemic but notes " a lack of electrolytes and solutes in the CTCs, insufficient human resources for the management of cases, investigations of confirmed cases and follow-up of contacts of confirmed cases especially in Anjouan, insufficient means of travel for the supervision of activities " but also " the lack of an ionogram device at the Samba laboratory ", the health center which hosts cholera patients in Grande-Comore.
Solidarity in favor of flood victims
She also reports the “ denial of the population accompanied by late consultations, insufficient sprayers for PCI in the islands, insufficient DLM for public places, a delay in filling on Kobo of the BDD on the notification of cases in Mohéli and Anjouan and a lack of premises at the port for surveillance agents at entry points to Ngazidja” , Grande Comore . Teams from Civil Security and the Red Crescent mobilized to lend health workers a helping hand. The newspaper Al-watwan speaks of " current weather conditions which do not help the situation " by repeating the words of Doctor Ibrahim Salim who believes, in the newspaper, that " bad weather contributes to the spread of the cholera bacteria, and the “The hospital is overwhelmed.”
President Azali in a disaster zone
The situation is complicated because the archipelago has also faced heavy flooding while a tropical storm is predicted " in the coming days", according to a press release from the General Directorate of Civil Security, based on information from meteorological services. Teams are on alert to help those affected by the probable floods. “This tropical storm could specifically affect the north of Ngazidja and the coasts of the northeast of Ndzuani, which would cause heavy rain and winds of around 45 km/h. In accordance with the country's emergency plan, this situation does not give rise to a state of alert ,” indicates this press release published yesterday, Wednesday, May 1 .
Now is the time for great vigilance for cholera and solidarity with those affected by the floods. President Azali Assoumani, returning from a trip to Kenya, immediately went to the disaster areas, accompanied by his wife, Ambari Darouech and numerous ministers. Representatives of the IMF and the World Bank, alongside the Minister of Finance, Mze Abdou Mohamed Chanfiou, also visited the victims in a heavily impacted locality. The Malagasy company TELMA as well as volunteers provide them with help.
Spread of cholera in Mwali I The town of Ndrondroni quarantined
Health |05/06/2024- Antufati Soidri
This measure comes following the “emergency measures to combat cholera”, decided by the Fomboni prefecture since May 1.
The town of Ndrondroni, epicenter of the cholera epidemic on the island of Mwali, has just been placed in quarantine. The decision was taken and implemented by the Island Coordination to Fight Cholera (which brings together the health authorities, the gendarmerie and civil security) this Saturday, May 4. This measure comes following the “emergency measures to combat cholera”, decided by the Fomboni prefecture since May 1.
It is in fact established that of the 380 cholera patients admitted to Mwali health structures, 360 come from the Mledjele region, mainly from the town of Ndrondroni. However, significant efforts have been made to treat the sick and fight against the transmission of the bacteria. This includes disinfecting homes, raising awareness and mobilizing communities for behavior change. However, the island coordinator for the fight against cholera, Doctor Hassanaly Abdoulanziz, deplores "the lack of community commitment". It must be said that following recent bad weather leading to flooding at the Fomboni market, where sellers expose food to the ground, increased risks are identified. Furthermore, the mobility of people between cities and islands has caused an increase in cases of the disease on the island. This is why urgent measures have been taken to limit its spread.
The coordinator therefore called on the population to carry out an operation to bring the Fomboni market up to standard on Sunday, May 5, in collaboration with civil security, the gendarmerie, the various health services and community associations, in order to carry out a major clean-up. . Note that on Friday, May 3, 12 new cases were recorded, with 12 new cured cases and 53 active cases at the Fomboni hospital center.

What happened, where and when?
Following confirmed tests, the Comoros Ministry of Health declared a cholera epidemic on February 2, 2024, at 8 p.m. local time. A Cholera Treatment Center (CTC) was activated in Samba to treat cholera cases (hospital on the outskirts of Moroni). This was confirmed by the Dar Es Alam Laboratory and reaffirmed by the Comoros Ministry of Health. Eleven weeks after the first cholera case was confirmed, the number of cases continues to increase (with 132 cases by end of February, 655 cases by end of March and 2,319 by 21st April 2024), and the outbreak has now spread to the three islands. The Government of Comoros decided to intensify response efforts, therefore the Comoros Red Crescent Society which has been actively involved since the beginning of the outbreak, will also extend the scope of its response and operation timeframe to ensure a contribution to the epidemic response in proportion to its scale.
As of April 21st, a total of 2,319 cases had been reported (437 in Ngadzidja, 1608 in Ndzuani and 274 in Mweli). A total of 55 deaths had been reported by then with case fatality rate of 2,4% (3 out of 4 deaths happening in the community). It's worth noting that the islands of the Comoros are referred to interchangeably by different names. For instance, Anjouan is also known as Ndzuani...

In the Comoros archipelago , affected for four months by a cholera epidemic which has already killed 134 people, a vaccination campaign was launched on Thursday June 13 on the island of Anjouan, we learned from the authorities. health.
More than 1,300 children have received a dose of oral vaccine on the poorest Comorian island closest to the French department of Mayotte, where cholera has killed two people since March. “The vaccine will provide six months of immunity and will thus break the chain of transmission ,” Mohamed Anssoufouddine, regional health director on the island, explained to AFP.
Anjouan is the most densely populated island in the Indian Ocean archipelago, with some 330,000 inhabitants out of the country's 870,000. Of the 134 deaths recorded, it accounts for 116, according to the latest official health bulletin. The Union of the Comoros has so far recorded 8,734 cases of cholera after the introduction of the disease in early February by a ship from Tanzania, where cholera is endemic.
“We started by vaccinating students in schools, because, soon, they will go on vacation ,” explains Mohamed Anssoufouddine, a cardiologist by training. More than 270,000 doses are available on the island, but “we need 379,000 ,” says Hayiriat Bint Hakim, head of vaccination, contacted by AFP. The pilot campaign is expected to last five days.
“This vaccine is one measure among others to eliminate the epidemic. It can return if barrier measures are not respected, such as hand washing and the provision of drinking water ,” warns the regional health director. Less than 30% of the population has access to drinking water, according to officials of the company responsible for water distribution.
