LAGOS ? A Consultant Public Health Physician and Epidemiologist with the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Ismail Abdul-Salam has disclosed that 15 deaths have so far been recorded out of 354 suspected cases of cholera in the state.
Speaking, weekend, at a stakeholders? forum organised by the State Ministry of the Environment, Office of Environmental Services, Abdul-Salam, who presented a lecture entitled, ?Prevention and Control of Cholera,? said the figures were obtained from a study carried out following the outbreak of cholera in the state last month.
?The first case of suspected cholera outbreak in Lagos was reported in September 19, 2013 on Lagos Island and later at Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area.

70 People Being Treated For Cholera in Kano

No fewer than 70 persons are currently receiving treatment at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Kano following the outbreak of cholera in Nasarawa and Dala Local Government Areas of the State.
The Deputy Director, Public Health and Disease Control in the hospital, Dr Tijjani Hussaini, made this known in Kano on Thursday.
``We started receiving cases of the disease two days ago and the number of affected persons has increased??, he said.
According to him, most of the victims were infected after visiting some of their infected relations...

At least 22 adults and three children have been confirmed dead while some 600 others are infected following a fresh cholera outbreak in Kano State in north western Nigeria.
An epidemiologist with the state?s Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), Dr. Tijjani Hussaini, told journalists that the three children died at the early hours of Thursday.
?At least 20 persons are receiving treatment while five were discharged today.
?There are also over 40 men and women at the diarrhoea treatment unit of the hospital,? he said.

?6218 cholera cases (140 Lab-confirmed) including 217 deaths (CFR 3.5%) have been reported between week01 and week51, 2013 from 20 states (89 LGAs). Whereas a total of 597 cholera cases including 18 deaths were reported within the same period (Wks01-51) in 2012 from 11 States (29 LGAs).
?In week51 2013, a total of 196 cholera cases (19 lab-confirmed) 6 deaths were reported from 11 LGAs (3 States: Jigawa, Kano and Katsina).

71 killed in Nigeria cholera outbreak

At least 71 people have died of cholera in Nigeria?s Kano state, an official said.
Abdulsalam Nasidi, project director of Nigeria?s Centre for Disease Control, said on Friday that 2,165 cases had been recorded in the affected areas in the past two months, Xinhua reported.
The government has sent a team with drugs to the state to help control the spread of the disease and to combat the outbreak.
