Again, the outbreak of cholera epidemic has been reported in at least four states in Nigeria and it has so far claimed scores of lives. In the last couple of days, some states in Nigeria have come under the spell of cholera epidemic. And aside those still anguishing in hospitals from the attack, the incredible death toll also give cause for concern. Weekly Trust investigations show that Plateau, Sokoto, Zamfara and Lagos States have been hit by cholera epidemic.
Zamfara recorded 1,117 cases with official confirmation of 72 deaths in two weeks. Unofficial sources said the casualty figure is higher as the official statistics did not reflect those that died either at home or before reaching the hospitals. According to the Medical teams managing the cholera outbreak in the state, Gusau recorded the highest number of cholera cases followed by, Zurmi, Maradun and Bakura local government areas.
...
Plateau State government which admits the outbreak of cholera in the state claimed that only nine people have been killed. But the community claims 30 people have so far died from the cholera outbreak. None could however dispute that over 100 people have been infected and treated from the disease.
...

October: the Cholera Month in Nigeria; Cholera Kills 96 In Zamfara and several in six other states
Posted on October 30, 2013 | Leave a comment
When the news of cholera outbreak in Zamfara was first broken in mid October, I quickly searched my document library for the various water projects in Nigeria, recalling that I had just read about Zamfara?s commendable investment in potable water.
The state committed seven billion Naira in April of this year for the provision of water. However, the announcement of the huge fund committed to water supply failed to give any hint on what the state intended to do on sanitation. It is therefore interesting to learn in October that the consumption of polluted water in this same state lead to the demise of 96 people and the illness of more than 500 people in this state.

That outbreak of cholera
Posted by: Tolulope Ojo in Letters 12 hours ago
SIR: Apart from the recent outbreak of cholera in Nigeria that killed three in Lagos and some others in Zamfara, at least 352 people have been killed by this infection in a space of three months. More than 6,400 cases have also been reported, mostly in the North. Doctors are currently monitoring outbreaks in 12 of the 36 states.
Nigeria had the first series of cholera outbreak between 1970- 1990. Despite this long experience with cholera, an understanding of the epidemiology of the disease and the reason for its persistence is still lacking.
Developed countries have almost zero incidence of cholera because they have widespread water treatment plants, food-preparation facilities and they observe strict sanitation protocols. Most people have access to toilets and hand-washing facilities. A lot of responsibilities in curbing this epidemic lie with the government although the citizens have a great role to play in battling and subduing cholera.

Cholera Outbreak in Nigeria
Deaths recorded in 12 States
Latest UN figures indicate that 2,771 cholera cases have been reported in Nigeria
this year resulting in 60 deaths; 613 of the cases were reported in October alone.
The total numer of cases this year indicates a five-fold increase in the number of
reported cholera cases in Nigeria- as compared to the same reporting period last
year. To date, 12 states have been affected, with the majority of cases occurring
in the North, with Zamfara (northwest) reported as the worst affected state.
Experts underline that Lagos state requires particular surveillance and that
preventative measures should be established in Sokoto and Katsina states.
Rural v. Urban Impact
The extent of the outbreak varies from one state to another, largely depending on
the number of health facilities available and the level of awareness vis-a-vis the
disease. According to officials from the Ministry of Health, the epidemic affects
rural and urban populations in different ways: preliminary data show that mortality
rates in rural northern states such as Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and Plateau are
five times higher than those in urban areas. The identification of new cases and
the referral of patients to health facilities in rural areas are essential to combating
the disease. Reports from UNICEF indicate that half of Nigeria's 160 million
people do not have access to safe water and one-third do not have access to
sanitation services.
Response to Date
The Plateau State Ministry of Health, Rural Water and Sanitation Agency
(RUWASA), WHO and UNICEF are providing immediate response. UNICEF
dispatched three drums of high test hypochlorite (HTH) to disinfect affected
hospitals and communities. An additional 235 cartons of water purification tablets
have been distributed at the household level. Interventions in the other five
affected states are carried out in conjunction with the State and Federal Ministries
of Health, the Centre for Disease Control, WHO, UNICEF and Nigeria?s Field
Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (FELTP).
Response to date is hampered by the current strike of resident physicians in state
and federal hospitals across the country, the non-release of accurate data of
cases and casualties, and flooding. At the community level, capacity to respond
to the cholera outbreak with emergency water treatment and sanitation is lacking.
This problem is even more critical in in those rural areas where the outbreak is
prevalent and where capacity and resources in primary health care centres is
limited.
The Regional Cholera Platform encourages the ?Sword & Shield? approach which
aims to both treat cases that arise in the short term (?the sword?) while
simultaneously addressing longer-term systemic issues that contribute to the
spread of the disease towards prevention in high risk areas for vulnerable
communities (?the shield?). This approach encourages the targeting of
transmission contexts, pro-activity and cross-border collaboration.
