            Swansea measles epidemic officially over

The measles epidemic centred on the Swansea area has been declared officially over eight months after it began.

There have been no laboratory-confirmed cases linked to the outbreak area since 22 May, health officials said.

Since November, 1,219 measles cases were diagnosed and a campaign launched to boost the uptake of the MMR vaccine.

One person died and a total of 88 people visited a hospital due to measles during the outbreak.

Some 75,868 unscheduled measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations were given to people who had not been immunised in a bid to bring the epidemic under control.

GP surgeries, hospital and schools held drop-in sessions, with Public Health Wales particularly keen to target children and young people who may have missed their scheduled jabs.

Measles: Hundreds of thousands still not vaccinated despite major campaign
                    11 Jul 2013 00:00
Some parents did not allow their children to have the vaccine due to an unfounded link with autism in the late 1990s

Hundreds of thousands of children have still not been vaccinated against measles despite a major campaign.

Health chiefs launched an unprecedented national drive in April for a million children to get the MMR jab amid fears of a measles epidemic.

They targeted 300,000 10 to 16-year-olds who were not vaccinated as babies and were thought to be at most risk of catching the disease.

But new figures published today suggest that while tens of thousands have since had their first jab, hundreds of thousands more still have not...
