First Measles Death Confirmed in Mexico in 2026
    ▲ By Editorial Staff
    January 26, 2026

Mexico City – The Federal Ministry of Health confirmed the first measles death in Mexico in 2026, according to the daily report monitoring the disease, as of Friday, January 23.

According to the official report, 987 confirmed cases of measles have been recorded in the country during the month of January. The death associated with this illness occurred in the state of Michoacán.

The document details that Jalisco leads the list of states with the highest number of infections, accumulating 521 cases, followed by Chiapas, with 200, and Sinaloa, with 65. Meanwhile, Mexico City reports 51 cases, while Colima has 34 in the same period.

In response to the increase in infections, the Mexican government reiterated that vaccination is the “primary tool” for preventing the spread of measles, a viral disease that has been experiencing an active outbreak since last year.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health called for a reinforcement of preventive measures, reminding the public that the measles vaccine is “safe, free, and highly effective.”

The federal agency emphasized that the disease remains under constant epidemiological surveillance through the National Epidemiological Surveillance System, which allows for the timely detection of cases, their laboratory confirmation, and the identification of circulating genotypes, in compliance with international health commitments.

According to official figures, 25 deaths and 6,430 confirmed cases of measles were reported in the country during 2025.

Given this situation, health authorities activated containment protocols that include the deployment of rapid response teams, active case finding, and the intensification of the national vaccination program.

Press Release No. 019 More than 2,000 schools are involved and epidemiological surveillance is maintained in response to the national measles outbreak

Preventive measures include vaccination and cleaning surfaces with water and chlorine. In Jalisco, more than one million measles vaccines have been administered. The use of face masks is mandatory for 30 days in basic education schools in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (AMG), and their use is recommended in middle and high schools.

In response to the current national measles outbreak, the State Government, through the Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ) and the Jalisco Education Secretariat (SEJ), carried out actions in more than 2,000 schools, including vaccination and cleaning of surfaces with water and chlorine; in addition, more than one million measles vaccines have been administered.

The use of face masks was also mandated for 30 days in basic education schools in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (AMG), and they recommend using them in middle and upper secondary education schools.

Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómez, head of the SSJ, explained that 2026 has seen an acceleration in the spread of the disease due to multiple factors.

“We believe that the most important contributor to this acceleration in 2026 was the December holidays, the end-of-year festivities, in which we observed a relaxation of the discipline of going to vaccination and, particularly, of all the measures that should be followed against respiratory diseases,” he noted.

The Secretary of Health said that, in coordination with the Ministry of Education, preventive actions against measles have been constant in schools since the beginning of the outbreak.

The mandatory use of face masks in basic education schools applies to Guadalajara, Zapopan, San Pedro Tlaquepaque, Tonalá, Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, El Salto and Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos.

In schools where a suspected case is registered, an epidemiological investigation is carried out and if the case is confirmed, the group is suspended and the virtual modality is applied for two weeks.

If more than one classroom is affected, as determined by epidemiological surveillance, the entire school takes virtual classes.

Ventilation of school spaces is of utmost importance and goes hand in hand with the cleaning of surfaces, with water and chlorine, carried out by the school's own cleaning staff; the use of face masks reinforces the protection of the health of students.

      Currently, in-person activities are suspended in certain groups of 30 schools;

The Secretary of Health specified that only in four cases did the entire school staff migrate to virtual classes for two weeks.

As of February 3, 2026, Mexico has recorded a cumulative total of 8,332 confirmed cases and 26 deaths. In Jalisco, 1,776 cases have been confirmed, placing it second nationally in incidence rate with 12.39 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Given this situation, in Jalisco, from 2025 to February 3, 2026, more than 1,020,000 doses of measles vaccines have been administered.

The goal set by the SSJ is to achieve a coverage of 350,000 doses per week, in order to break the chain of transmission.

“For us this is very important, Jalisco’s vaccination goal is at least 2 million doses and we have already achieved 50 percent of this goal,” said Pérez Gómez.

Juan Carlos Flores Miramontes, Secretary of Education in the state, pointed out that the education system has demonstrated its ability to contain the spread of viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2, and that with discipline and shared responsibility, it will do the same against diseases such as measles.

“We will continue to emphasize to our parents and teachers the importance of vaccination, not only for children, but also for ourselves to ensure we are protected. And if in doubt, the doctor and his team have told us we can get a booster shot. Second, hygiene. The same things that helped us contain COVID-19: washing hands, avoiding sharing food, and avoiding close contact,” he explained.

The Secretary called on mothers, fathers, and guardians not to send their children to school if they have any symptoms, and urged teachers to remain attentive to the health of their students.

“We need to be very vigilant to ensure that the fever doesn't rise to 38 degrees Celsius or higher, and watch for skin rashes, which are the most obvious symptoms, as well as cough, conjunctivitis, and nasal discharge. If the person with this potential infection is suspected, they and those around them should wear face masks. They should try to isolate themselves as much as possible, which is why they need to stay home. We ask parents and guardians to seek medical attention immediately and provide the school with this information,” he added.

Measles is characterized by symptoms such as high fever, cough, runny nose, rash (exanthem), which usually starts on the head or neck and spreads to the rest of the body.

The disease can lead to serious complications such as hearing loss, blindness due to corneal damage, pneumonia, seizures, or permanent motor or intellectual impairments due to brain inflammation.

There is no specific treatment for measles, so vaccination remains the best prevention tool.

The Ministry of Health confirmed that measles in Mexico reached 12,176 accumulated cases between 2025 and 2026, with preliminary data as of March 3. The report from the Special Epidemiological Surveillance System details 31,338 probable cases and 32 deaths in 32 states.

According to the latest data, the virus continues to be transmitted within the community. Federal authorities explained that the increase is due to chains of transmission in areas with low vaccination coverage. The outbreak has spread across 415 municipalities.

General situation of measles in Mexico from 2025 to 2026

Of the total reported cases, 11,261 were ruled out and 7,901 remain under investigation. No cases of rubella were reported. The national case fatality rate is around 0.26%, indicating timely medical attention for most patients.

The increase compared to the previous report confirms a sustained growth trend. Experts warn that control depends on strengthening immunization programs for children and adults without vaccination records.

            Analysis by Demographics and Age

The distribution by sex is balanced:

            50.3% male
            49.7% female

The age groups with the most cases are 1 to 4 years, 5 to 9 years, and adults aged 25 to 29. The highest incidence occurs in children under one year old. Specialists explain that the lack of a complete vaccination schedule increases the risk of complications and hospitalization.
            Geographic Distribution and Mortality

The 32 deaths are concentrated in nine states. Chihuahua leads with 21 cases, followed by Jalisco and Durango.

The rest were registered in Sonora, Michoacán, Tlaxcala, Mexico City, Chiapas, and Guerrero. The national spread reflects constant mobility and coverage gaps.
            Recent Measles Data in Mexico

In Epidemiological Week 8, 538 cases were confirmed. In Week 9, more probable cases were added, increasing the cumulative total.

Jalisco and Chiapas are reporting new cases. Authorities predict the curve will continue to rise if vaccination rates don't increase...

Measles claims 36 lives and 14,986 cases in Mexico
Infections rose by 505 since the last report, dated March 25.

Mexico registered another death from measles, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths in the country to 36, according to the daily outbreak report as of March 31, 2026.

This death comes amid sustained transmission, with 14,986 confirmed cases, representing an increase of 505 infections since the previous count of 14,481 reported on March 25.

The 36 deaths are distributed across 10 states. Chihuahua has the highest number of deaths with 21, followed by Jalisco with five, while Sonora, Durango, Michoacán, Tlaxcala, Mexico City, Chiapas, Guerrero, and Sinaloa each have one death.

During the same period, probable cases reached 36,733, while those ruled out totaled 16,595, and cases under investigation decreased to 5,152.

              Measles by State

The virus remains present in all 32 states and has spread to 458 municipalities.

Based on the 14,986 confirmed cases and 36 deaths, the national case fatality rate is 0.24 percent.

The breakdown by state confirms the concentration of the outbreak in a few states. Jalisco leads with 5,617 accumulated confirmed cases, followed by Chihuahua with 4,552.

In a second group are Chiapas with 961 cases, Mexico City with 724, Michoacán with 402, Guerrero with 357, and Sinaloa with 353.

Other states have intermediate numbers: Sonora with 332 cases; the State of Mexico with 283; Durango with 230; and Puebla with 210.

At lower levels, but with active transmission, are Quintana Roo with 141 cases; Colima with 121; Tabasco with 92; Coahuila with 72; and Querétaro with 52.

The remaining states report figures below 50 confirmed cases, reflecting a national spread, but with varying intensity. arrow-circle-right We recommend
Measles vaccines: more than 13 million doses administered: Ssa

At the state level, the case fatality rate shows significant contrasts. Chihuahua registers a rate close to 0.46 percent, while Jalisco remains at 0.06 percent, despite being the epicenter.

Among the highest rates are Tlaxcala, with 2.22 percent; Guerrero, with 1.04 percent; Chiapas, with 0.64 percent; and Durango, with 0.53 percent. Mexico City has a case fatality rate of 0.15 percent.

These contrasts reflect differences in the severity of cases, timely access to health services, and the conditions of medical care.

              Jalisco, main transmission hotspot

The behavior of the outbreak confirms that Jalisco continues to be the main transmission hotspot in 2026, while Chihuahua maintains the highest historical burden of deaths.

By age group, children aged one to four years account for the highest number of cases, with 1,946 registered, followed by the 25-to-29 age group with 1,768, and the five-to-nine age group with 1,722.

The highest incidence rate is in children under one year old, with 72.84 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The distribution by sex remains stable: 51.2 percent in males and 48.8 percent in females.

The sustained increase in infections, their wide geographic spread, and the continued deaths confirm that the measles outbreak in Mexico remains active, with ongoing transmission throughout the country.
