To give their babies some early protection, mothers of newborns are being asked to get vaccinated against whooping cough.

Pertussis, also called whooping cough, is a bacterial infection of the respiratory tract that can lead to severe coughing spells and breathing problems.

The disease, which is most likely to affect infants, can lead to pneumonia and even death in rare cases, the Saskatchewan Health Ministry says.

Children can receive immunizations as early as two months after birth, but health officials are worried about what can happen until then...

...The province has seen an increase in whooping cough among infants and one baby has died this year.

In the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region, between June 2009 and April 30, 2010, there have been 14 cases of pertussis, according to a recent report in the Prince Albert Daily Herald.

Meanwhile, health officials in Saskatoon say whooping cough has taken hold in one elementary school, with16 recent cases at Ecole River Heights...

Cluster of whooping cough cases prompts Saskatoon Health Region to ask new mothers to get vaccinated

By Jeremy Warren, The StarPhoenix June 17, 2010 6:02 PM

New mothers should get vaccinated for whooping cough to protect vulnerable newborns as Saskatchewan faces another surge in cases of the respiratory disease, says the Saskatoon Health Region.

For the first two months of life, newborns are unable to handle vaccinations ? so the health region wants mothers to protect their children by getting their own vaccinations.

?It?s a very severe illness when we talk about children under the age of one,? said deputy medical health officer Dr. Johnmark Opondo. ?The best protection for your child is to get the vaccine.?

Since April 1, the health region has been asking new mothers to get immunized. While in the hospital, medical staff will inform mothers about the benefits of immunization.

The region?s vaccine program will be offered to new mothers for one year, Opondo said...

Whooping cough cases on rise in Saskatchewan
        By Angela Hall, Leader-Post September 25, 2010 5:04 AM

Parents are being urged to keep their children's vaccinations up-to-date with the number of whooping cough cases on the rise in Saskatchewan.

The ministry is also recommending that parents and caregivers of infants under six months of age be immunized with the adult whooping cough booster to prevent infection from passing to the child.

Since January, the province has recorded about 120 cases of whooping cough, which is also known as pertussis, said Dr. Saqib Shahab, deputy chief medical health officer for Saskatchewan.

That's roughly five times what might be seen in a quiet year, he said...

          Little warning on whooping cough

New mom angered by lack of information about outbreak in city

          By Lana Haight, The StarPhoenix

          October 7, 2010 2:12 PM

A Saskatoon mom whose newborn son is fighting for his life in hospital with whooping cough is angry she wasn't told about an outbreak of the highly infectious disease.

"I'm bitter about it because if we were informed, this whole thing could have been avoided. There were times when it was pretty severe and it was unsure if he was going to survive or not," said Crystal Norris.

"It's looking better but something else could still go wrong."

Cody was born at Royal University Hospital on Sept. 15 and re-admitted to hospital less than three weeks later. At first, his parents thought he was congested because of a cold.

"He was blowing bubbles with his spit and his nose was stuffy. You could hear it when he was breathing and when you touched his back you could feel the congestion. It gradually just got worse and worse and then on Sunday he wasn't feeding normally," said Norris.

Cody's health declined rapidly. He has been intubated to aid his breathing and he was receiving fluids intravenously because he couldn't feed.

He has developed pneumonia in addition to the whooping cough. And infection has spread throughout his body, she said.
