KUALA LUMPUR (March 9, 2011): Some 2,800 trainees and staff are under quarantine at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) following an outbreak of a flu-like virus which has claimed one life. A 25-year-old trainee police constable died on Tuesday.

It is learnt that the dead trainee, who was from Kuala Kangsar, had exhibited flu-like symptoms for two weeks but had sought treatment only on March 4. He was warded at the intensive care unit the next day. However, his condition deteriorated and he died late on Tuesday.

Another 28 trainees at Pulapol have also been infected with the flu-like virus identified as ?Adenovirus? and the *figure is rising. Two of them are in critical condition in the ICU at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said in a statement today that as at 8.30pm on Tuesday, 210 police trainees were diagnosed with influenza- like illnesses (ILI).

He said laboratory test results of throat swabs from 18 of the 20 trainees (90%) and three of four stool samples taken from those who had been isolated indicated that they had been infected by the Adenovirus.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said all training at Pulapol had been temporarily *suspended pending the all-clear from the Health Ministry.

He said efforts to contain the *pandemic at the training centre were being carried out stringently by the police and relevant authorities.

All 1,945 trainee constables and inspectors and 854 Pulapol staff had been ordered to remain within the centre and 226 trainees who had been in direct contact with those affected by the *Adenovirus had been isolated, he said.

He said an operations room had been set up to manage enquiries from the families of the trainees and those wishing to check on the health conditions of the trainees could contact 03-26882009.

8 doctors, 32 medical personnel in Pulapol

KUALA LUMPUR (March 10, 2011): Eight doctors and 32 other medical personnel have been stationed at the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol) at Jalan Semarak here to monitor and treat hundreds of police trainees suspected to be affected by the outbreak of the Adenovirus which claimed the life of a 25-year-old trainee constable on Tuesday.

Pulapol commandant SAC II Zulkifli Mohamed said the centre remains off limits to visitors and unauthorised personnel as efforts to contain the flu outbreak is underway.

He said 27 trainee constables and four trainee inspectors of the centre remain admitted to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital's regular ward and are reported to be in stable condition.

He said 412 other trainees are in quarantine at Pulapol and are put under observation.

Zulkifli said the upkeeping of cleanliness and hygiene at the centre has also been intensified to ensure the flu outbreak does not spread. He said the temporary cease of training for the trainees will resume only upon the advice of the Health Ministry.

He said police will keep the public updated on the situation and urged family members of the trainees who wish to make enquiries to call 03-26882062 or 03-26882009.

308 Pulapol Trainees Quarantined After Adenovirus Outbreak

BENTONG, March 10 (Bernama) -- A total of 308 trainees at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) in Jalan Semarak, Kuala Lumpur have been quarantined following the Adenovirus outbreak, which has claimed one life.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said a 21-year-old trainee police constable died on Tuesday while 26 others were warded at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, including three at the intensive care unit.

He said the ministry was monitoring the situation in Pulapol to contain the virus and prevent it from spreading to other areas.

"The ministry had yet to identify the actual cause of the Adenovirus incidence and how it spread in Pulapol," he told reporters after launching the 1Malaysia Caring Connection for inmates of the Bentong Prison here today.

Liow also urged all police, prison, armed forces and National Service training camps to step up their cleanliness.

In another development, he said the ministry would hire 200 medical specialists from Egypt, India and Bangladesh to overcome shortage in government hospitals.

"We have only 2,500 specialists in major hospitals in the country and the foreign specialists will be placed in district hospitals throughout the country," he said.

He said major hospitals like Kuantan, Temerloh, Kuala Lumpur Hospital, and general hospitals in state capitals were congested with patients seeking specialist treatment.

"With foreign specialists placed at district hospitals, we hope overcrowding at major hospitals can be resolved," he added.

26 in Ipoh school hit by flu virus

KUALA LUMPUR: As the medical authorities laboured to disinfect and contain the spread of the influenza-like illness (ILI) at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here yesterday, an outbreak was reported in a school in Ipoh.

Twenty-six SMK Anderson students, aged between 13 and 17, who are boarders at the school hostel were placed in quarantine and treated for ILI.

The ILI outbreak in Pulapol has claimed one life -- a 25-year-old police constable trainee Mohd Azizan Azirid of Kuala Kangsar, Perak. He died in the intensive care unit of Kuala Lumpur Hospital on Tuesday.

Azizan was among 39 trainees who came down with ILI and are now under observation by a medical team. One trainee remains warded.

On Wednesday, Pulapol was closed to outsiders and all activities were suspended.

Those who come down ILI may die of community-acquired pneunomia with multi-organ failure caused by adenovirus infection.

Pulapol Commandant Zulkifli Mohamed said 412 cadets and four personnel had been isolated for treatment and observation, up from 226 cadets on Wednesday.

Zulkifli said cadets suspected of being infected by the virus were isolated in a barrack.

"The staff are confined to their quarters in Pulapol," he added.

Zulkifli said trainees who were not infected were told to keep their barracks and Pulapol clean.

The Health Ministry has stationed 32 officers and eight doctors in Pulapol to monitor the situation.

In Bentong, Bernama quoted Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Teong Lai as saying the health authorities had yet to identify the cause of the Adenovirus infections and how it spread in Pulapol.

Speaking after launching a 1Malaysia Caring Connection for inmates in Bentong Prison, Liow urged all police stations, prisons, armed forces bases and National Service training camps to step up cleanliness.

In Ipoh, Perak Health Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said the outbreak at SMK Anderson was detected after several students sought treatment at a private clinic for flu-like symptoms on March 3.

"All of them are in a stable condition and are responding well to treatment. The state Health Department will be sending a team of doctors to check on their condition daily."

Dr Mah said it was not necessary to "seal" the school or the dormitory housing 179 students.

"At the moment, only those living in the dormitory have showed ILI symptoms and other students and teachers in the school are unaffected."

He said 108 positive cases of Influenza A (H1N1) were reported in the state this year, compared with 367 cases and two deaths last year.

He urged the public not to be alarmed and to seek immediate treatment when down with flu, fever or sore throat.

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have not ruled out food poisoning and unsanitary conditions as among causes leading to the death of a trainee at the Kuala Lumpur Police Training College (Pulapol) last week.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Hussin Ismail said, ongoing investigations by the police and health ministry aside, the two were seen as likely factors causing the death.

"We have also taken measures to inspect high-risk areas in the college," he said after a handing-over of duties ceremony involving Bukit Aman Logistics Department director Datuk Mahsuri Zainal and acting director Datuk Zubaidah Md Ismail here Friday.

He said food poisoning could also occur as a result of poor personal hygiene, in addition to unclean surroundings while training or sleeping, and exposure to pollution (if any) from Sungai Bonus located near Pulapol.

It was reported that Adenovirus infection affected Pulapol trainees since last Friday, taking the life of a 21-year-old from Kuala Kangsar, Perak. The victim died about 8.30pm on Tuesday at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Hussin said only one trainee remained in the hospital's intensive care unit while 29 others were treated in normal wards.

He said there were 590 Pulapol staff and trainees, of which 560 were isolated. Thirty are treated at the hospital.

Two Police Trainees In ICU

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 (Bernama) -- Two police trainees have been warded in the intensive care unit of the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment of Adenovirus infection, which causes illness of the respiratory system, among other ailments.

Two trainee women inspectors believed to have been infected by the virus were admitted to the hospital Sunday.

The two in the ICU were a trainee inspector, who was warded yesterday, and a trainee constable hospitalised on March 6, said SAC Zulkifli Mohamed, commandant of PULAPOL, the police training centre. Both are men.

The four are among 31 from the centre being treated at the hospital, he told Bernama via SMS.

The others were 15 trainee men inspectors, eight trainee women inspectors, three trainee constables and a PULAPOL staff, he said.

Zulkifli said that 583 were being quarantined -- 251 of them trainee men inspectors, 234 trainee women inspectors, 90 trainee constables and eight PULAPOL staff.

The quarantine followed the death of a 21-year-old trainee from Kuala Kangsar in Perak last Tuesday of Adenovirus infection.

KUALA LUMPUR: Another trainee of the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol), trainee inspector Mohd Redzuan Ishak died following the Adenovirus infection at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) early this morning.
The police said on its facebook site that Mohd Redzuan, 26, who had been receiving treatment at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for the past one week, died at 4.20am.

"Mohd Redzuan's remains will be taken back to Bandar Sg Buaya, Rawang this morning for burial," the police said in the website.

Mohd Redzuan was the second victim who died of the Adenovirus infection which had infected trainees at the Pulapol since March 4.

Adenovirus: Clean Up Operation Continuing At Pulapol

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 (Bernama) -- Clean up operations are continuing at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) in Jalan Semarak here to ensure that the Adenovirus outbreak which broke out at the centre on March 4 is contained, said Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) management director Datuk Robiah Abd Ghani.

"RMP is giving serious attention to this outbreak and is working closely with the Health Ministry on the matter," she said in a statement here Friday.

She said trainees not affected were being allowed carry out recreational activities and that women trainees would be transferred to a new hostel once the clean up operation was completed.

Robiah, on behalf of Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar, also conveyed condolences to the families of Insp Mohd Redzuan Ishak, 26, who died yesterday due to infection by the virus and Mohd Azizan Azirid, 21, who died two weeks ago due to the same reason.

Updating the latest status on the outbreak, Robiah said 26 Pulapol trainees were still warded at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) including a trainee constable and two women trainee inspectors who were receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.

He added that 478 trainees were still being quarantined.

Trainee inspector admitted to ICU HKL

KUALA LUMPUR (March 19, 2011): Another trainee inspector at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) this morning due to the 'Adenovirus' infection.

The male trainee was admitted to the ICU at about 8.30 this morning.
The Royal Malaysia Police, stated in its Facebook earlier that a male trainee constable and two women trainee inspectors were still receiving treatment at the unit.

This raised the number of trainees admitted to the ICU to four, compared with three yesterday. The total number of trainee inspectors and constables receiving treatment at the HKL was 24 compared with 26 yesterday, the statement said.

"They comprise nine male trainee inspectors, 11 women trainee inspectors and four male trainee constables," it said.

As at 8am today, 347 trainees were being isolated compared with 478 yesterday.

Pulapol gets nod for Police Day celebrations

PUTRAJAYA (March 23, 2011): The Health Ministry today gave the green light for the 204th Police Day celebrations, scheduled for March 25, to be held at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) as the adenovirus infection has been confirmed to be under control.

Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the situation at Pulapol had returned to normal, with no new cases reported.

Hence, Liow said the public need not worry about attending the celebrations as appropriate measures had been taken to ensure their safety.

"They (Pulapol authorities) want our feedback before deciding to hold the celebrations there and we have found that the situation in the area has returned to normal," he told reporters after the soft-launch of MedikTV, the ministry's official broadcast channel for government hospitals at Putrajaya Hospital here.

The minister said only nine Pulapol trainees were still warded for the adenovirus infection, with four at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital and the rest at the Sungai Buloh Hospital. Two others in the intensive care unit were recovering from the infection.

The number of trainees quarantined at Pulapol had also declined to 170.

"They are all in good condition and will be allowed to return home soon," said Liow, adding that he was still waiting for the report from the Institute of Medical Research on the adenovirus infection which started on March 4, resulting in the death of two Pulapol trainees.

Meanwhile, Pulapol Commandant Senior Assistant Commissioner Zulkifli Mohamed confirmed that the situation at Pulapol was safe for the Police Day celebrations.

"Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), the situation is now under control and safe ... the marching practices by other teams like the Federal Reserve Unit and the Traffic Police have also been conducted at Pulapol," he told Bernama when contacted here today.

PUTRAJAYA: Another trainee at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) in Jalan Semarak, Kuala Lumpur, died of adenovirus infection, bringing the total death toll to three.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the victim, from Bagan Datoh, Perak, was admitted to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital on March 3 and died of multiple organ failure at its intensive care unit at about 11.30pm last night.

"The victim was from the earlier cases. It's not a new infection. The last case was detected on March 19," he told reporters here today.

Meanwhile, police said two female trainees were still being treated at the hospital and had shown encouraging signs of recovery.

Third Pulapol trainee dies of adenovirus

KUALA LUMPUR: A third trainee of the Malaysian Police Training Academy (Pulapol) has died of Adenovirus after fighting for his life for almost a month.

Trainee constable Mohamed Siman, 23, died at 11.30pm on Tuesday at the intensive care unit of Hospital Kuala Lumpur after being admitted on March 5.

He was the third victim to have died after being infected with the virus after the first death was reported on March 8.

The first casualty of the viral infection was 25-year-old trainee constable Azizan Aziz while the second was trainee inspector Redzuan Ishak, 26, from Kampung Sungai Buaya, Rawang who died on March 17.

Mohamed's body was sent to Tebuk Kiyai at Selekoh in Perak for burial Wednesday.

His father Siman Safar said it was Mohamed's ambition and dream to be a top cop.

He has always supported and guided Mohamed to ensure he achieve his childhood dream.

?Now everything is dashed and what is left is only the dream,? he said, adding that he last met his son last week before he slipped into a coma.

Mohamed's application for constable training was accepted only after three tries.

His elder brother Zulhasri who sent Mohamed to Pulapol to register for training, said Mohamed was so happy and proud that he was on his way to become a policeman.

Pulapol commandant Senior Assistant Commissioner Zulkifli Mohamed said no more trainees are being treated at the hospital's ICU and that the four trainees currently at normal wards are showing signs of recovery.

Until yesterday, 59 people including trainees and staff are being isolated at three blocks in Pulapol.

Family members who would like to obtain more information are asked to contact Pulapol's special operations room at 03-2688 2062 and 03-2688 2009.

In PUTRAJAYA, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the remaining 37 trainees isolated at Pulapol will be discharged on April 2 if there are no new cases.

?We need a few more days. If there are no more new cases, we can announce that the place if free of the virus,? he said after presenting the 2010 Clean Canteen Awards here Wednesday.
