أشارت التقارير الصادرة عن الإدارة المركزية للسياحة والمصايف إلى انخفاض عدد السائحين الوافدين عن طريق المطار بنسبة 37.99%، وعن طريق الميناء بنسبة 23%، والإقامة بالفنادق بنسبة 7%، وزيارة المناطق الأثرية بنسبة 10%. وهناك توقعات باستمرار الانخفاض بسبب الأمراض الوبائية التى أثارت الخوف بين جموع المصطافين، وتهدد الموسم السياحى الحالى.
وعن الإجراءات الوقائية التى تتخذها الإدارة المركزية للسياحة والمصايف، أكد اللواء إيهاب فاروق كيل وزارة السياحة بالإسكندرية، أن الإدارة بالتنسيق مع مديرية التموين والصحة بمحافظة الإسكندرية، ينظمون حملات تفتيشية دورية على المنشآت السياحية للتأكد من خلوها من ملوثات الأمراض الوبائية (أنفلونزا الطيور والخنازير والطاعون)، والتأكد من سلامة المواد الغذائية بها، وخاصة اللحوم، وإلى الآن لم يتم تسجيل حالة مخالفة واحدة متعلقة بتلك الأمراض الوبائية، وكلها مخالفات لا تتعدى المخالفات التقليدية. فعلى مدار 17 حملة قامت بها الإدارة حتى شهر مايو 2009، تم تحرير 152 محضرا للسياحة و83 للتموين ولم تسجل محاضر بمديرية الصحة من جراء تلك الحملات حتى الآن. Alexandria's tourism season this year is threatened
