The Mega Fitness Gym 24H in Quebec City is now linked to more than 500 cases of COVID-19, contributing to a significant spike in cases in the provincial capital. (Francis Vachon/The Canadian Press)

We still don't know exactly how it started ? a runner on a treadmill, or perhaps someone lifting weights ? but an outbreak at a gym in Quebec City has become one of the largest recorded COVID-19 superspreading events in Canada.

The Mega Fitness Gym 24H, tucked behind a busy highway in an industrial section of the provincial capital, became a major source of contagion for the B117 variant first identified in the United Kingdom, which now accounts for 70 per cent of all cases in Quebec City.

The gym was shut down March 31 as the city was once again put under lockdown. To date, there have been 224 people infected at the gym, and another 356 related cases involving outbreaks at 49 workplaces. A 40-year-old man who trained at the gym has died.

We still don’t know exactly how it started, but the outbreak has become one of the largest recorded COVID-19 superspreading events in Canada. Experts say it serves as a cautionary tale as the country contends with more transmissible variants of the coronavirus.

Capitale-Nationale, Chaudi?re-Appalaches and Outaouais: emergency measures extended until April 25

    GENEVI?VE LAJOIE
    Tuesday, April 13, 2021 12:58 PM
    UPDATE Tuesday, April 13, 2021 3:44 PM

The government is extending emergency measures in Quebec City, L?vis and Gatineau until April 25.

The 8 p.m. curfew as well as the closure of schools and non-essential businesses have been renewed and extended to all the municipalities of Chaudi?re-Appalaches and the Outaouais.

This is what Fran?ois Legault announced at a press conference on Tuesday. The Prime Minister warned citizens that there would be no return to "some normalcy" until June 24.

There is no question, for the moment, of adding restrictions in Montreal or Laval. But "it is not impossible that we have to go further," he insisted.

Public health officials are also seeing younger and younger people being hospitalized following COVID-19 infection.
    ...
Fran?ois Legault had a message for young adults: "I understand that you are tired, I was 20 and, when you are 20, it's time to be with your friends, he agreed. . Over the past year, you have been asked a lot. [...] But here it is your health that is at stake. "

Vaccination of teachers and chronically ill patients

Health Minister Christian Dub? also announced that chronically ill and essential workers across Quebec could make an appointment to be vaccinated starting Wednesday.

Quebec reports 1,490 cases of COVID-19 and 12 deaths, for a total of 329,472 people infected and 10,756 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Public Health on Tuesday tightened the rules surrounding the wearing of masks, which are now mandatory when two people who do not live at the same address engage in an outdoor activity together.

    More details to come ...
