Another cat with bird flu confirmed in Seoul
    By Lee Jaeeun
    Published : Aug 1, 2023 - 14:46
    Updated : Aug 1, 2023 - 14:55

Six days after two cats were confirmed to have been infected with avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, at an animal shelter in Seoul, an additional cat was confirmed to have contracted the virus at an animal shelter in another district of the city, the Agriculture Ministry said on Tuesday.

A cat at an animal shelter in Gwanak-gu died after showing respiratory symptoms and receiving treatment. An in-depth test found it was infected with a highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu strain, according to the ministry.

Two cats died in Yongsan-gu last week, marking the first two bird flu cases detected in mammals since 2016.

As all the infected cats so far have been strays, experts believe that they contracted the virus through contact with wild birds or feces in the wild, according to the officials...

Discovery of AI antigen in cat food... order for recall and disposal of the product

Highly pathogenicity is under close examination...Food used at animal shelter in Gwanak-gu, Seoul confirmed to have cat AI
            • Reporter Lee So-hee lsh04@vop.co.kr
            • Publication 2023-08-02 13:02:06In the past week, cats at two animal shelters in Seoul were confirmed with highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI). However, while the government and local governments were conducting epidemiological investigations, AI antigens were discovered in cat food. An order was issued to recall and destroy all of the feed.

On the 2nd, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs) said, "The avian influenza (H5 type) antigen was confirmed in a companion animal feed sample test collected from a feline highly pathogenic avian influenza facility in Gwanak-gu, Seoul."

Previously, the Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock Quarantine Headquarters and the Seoul Metropolitan Government conducted an epidemiological investigation on the occurrence of highly pathogenic AI, and also inspected pet food stored in the facility. As a result of the test, AI antigen was detected. However, whether it is highly pathogenic has not yet been confirmed. High pathogenicity results can be confirmed after 2-3 days.

The companion animal food for which the antigen was detected are two products, 'Balanced Duck' and 'Balanced Chicken' of the brand 'Tosil Tosil Restaurant'. This feed manufacturer is 'Nature's Row' located in Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the company was found to have manufactured pet food from May 25 to August 1 without properly carrying out processes such as sterilization and sterilization. Accordingly, Gyeonggi-do, the governing local government, issued an order to stop manufacturing, selling, and supplying the company's products, as well as to recall and dispose of them.

In the future, the company and Gyeonggi-do will directly collect the product in question. Consumers with product purchase history information (delivery history, etc.) are provided with information on recall and disposal by the 3rd. Buyers can also contact the local government to receive guidance on how to collect them. You can contact the manufacturer's representative number (070-7610-4554) or check the website (https://smartstore.naver.com/tosiltosilrestaurant).

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs recommended, “Consumers who have the product in question should seal it in a plastic bag until the product is collected, disinfect it using hand sanitizer, etc., and store it separately.” In addition, “If a cat that is or has been fed the feed shows symptoms of suspected highly pathogenic AI, such as fever, loss of appetite, respiratory symptoms (difficulty breathing, dry cough, etc.), immediately contact the livestock quarantine agency (1588-4060, 1588-9060). Please report it,” he stressed.

In the future, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will conduct a follow-up investigation of the raw materials supplied to the feed manufacturer and promote quarantine measures such as disinfection and inspection. In addition, to prevent similar cases, the company plans to conduct a full investigation on whether manufacturers of pet food that use chicken or duck meat adhere to sterilization and sterilization processes.

Meanwhile, on the 25th of last month, two cats who died at an animal shelter in Yongsan-gu, Seoul were confirmed as highly pathogenic AI (H5N1 type). Later, on August 1, a cat who visited the hospital with respiratory symptoms at an animal shelter in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, died and was tested positive. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food conducted related epidemiological investigations and strengthened quarantine measures.https://vop.co.kr/A00001637588.html

              S. Korea detects avian influenza virus in cat food
              14:27 August 02, 2023
(ATTN: ADDS more info on latest cases, contact tracing throughout)

SEOUL, Aug. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's agriculture ministry said Wednesday it has detected an H5 avian influenza (AI) strain in cat food, and ordered its manufacturer to recall and destroy the affected products.

Last month, a cat living at a shelter in Seoul's Gwanak district died after showing respiratory symptoms, and it was found Monday to have been infected with a highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza strain, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Follow-up tests on the facility showed that the H5 virus was detected in cat food used there, and its manufacturer, Nature's Raw, in the city of Gimpo, west of Seoul, had failed to abide by due sterilization procedures, the ministry said.

Whether the virus from the cat food is highly pathogenic will be determined in about two days.

"The company had not fully followed necessary sterilization steps over the course of manufacturing products since May 25. The government ordered the company to stop producing and selling the items, and to recall and destroy them," the ministry said in a release.

The company skipped the sterilization process due to the breakdown of its equipment, a ministry official said.

,,, the ministry decided to launch an inspection into all manufacturers of animal food using chicken, duck and other meats....Officials said four additional cases have been confirmed among cats in the two shelters, bringing the total caseload among cats to seven.

People who have had contact with the cats in the Gwanak and Yongsan shelters have not shown any symptoms, and there has not been a human AI infection through cats or other mammals......
The authorities are also grappling with how to deal with infected cats.

In accordance with related regulations, animals infected with the avian influenza are supposed to be culled, but it is not easy to force cat owners to administer mercy killing.

"We are reviewing an option of setting up facilities to isolate infected pets and treat them
              ,.

FONT SIZE SEOUL, Aug. 4 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has confirmed a highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) virus in cat food used at a Seoul animal shelter that earlier reported flu cases among cats, the agriculture ministry said Friday.

Earlier this week, the H5 AI strain was found in two kinds of cat food -- Balanced Duck and Balanced Chicken manufactured by Nature's Raw -- used at the shelter in Seoul's Gwanak district, and follow-up tests found that they were contaminated with the highly pathogenic H5N1 AI strain, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

At least one cat there died after being infected with the H5N1 AI strain.

The two contaminated items were found to have been produced without adequate sterilization since May 25 due to a facility breakdown, and the government is checking for any further affected cases as a total of 268 customers had bought the items.

Upon detection of the virus, the government ordered the manufacturer to recall and destroy the products, and launched an inspection into all manufacturers of animal food using chicken, duck and other meats....https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20230804002000320
