The 'H5-type avian influenza (AI) antigen' detected at a meat duck (egg-laying chicken) farm in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do was also confirmed as 'H5N1-type highly pathogenic AI'.

According to South Jeolla Province on the 15th, as a result of a close examination of the 'H5 type AI antigen' detected at a meat duck farm in Songji-myeon, Haenam-gun, where the farmer reported an increase in mortality, it was determined to be 'H5N1 type highly pathogenic AI' on the 14th.

The farm was raising 35,000 ducks for meat.

This winter, this is the 21st cumulative case of 'H5N1 type highly pathogenic AI' at poultry farms in Jeollanam-do.

Previously, when AI antigens were detected on the 13th, Jeonnam-do deployed an initial quarantine team to control entry to the farm and mobilized quarantine vehicles to intensively disinfect.

35,000 ducks raised in the farm where the outbreak occurred were preventively slaughtered, and no additional slaughtering was carried out as there were no other poultry farms within 500m.

3 farms and 72 epidemiological and affiliated farms within a radius of 10km were inspected, and a 24-hour suspension order was issued for affiliated farms and related facilities.

Jeollanam-do is conducting a simultaneous inspection for two weeks until the 18th of all 582 poultry farms in the province to find infected animals.

Currently, 46 cases of highly pathogenic AI have occurred in poultry farms in 9 cities and provinces nationwide.

The cumulative number of cases in Jeonnam is 21, including 14 ducks and 7 chickens.

AI antigen detection in Seongju laying hen farm... Highly pathogenic AI potential

Quarantine work is underway on the 20th at a farmhouse in Busan where avian influenza (AI) antigens were detected. yunhap news

A suspected case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) was found in Seongju-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Gyeongsangbuk-do announced on the 22nd that avian influenza (AI) H5 type antigen was detected in Seongju laying hens farm. High pathogenicity is being tested at the Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock Quarantine Headquarters. It usually takes 1-2 days to make a final decision.

The farm where the AI occurred is a farm that raises 66,000 laying hens. When the laying hens died on the 21st, the farm owner reported to Seongju-gun.

An official from North Gyeongsang Province said, “We are actually looking at it as a confirmed case of highly pathogenic AI.”

Gyeongbuk-do is restricting movement and conducting emergency surveillance for 7 poultry farms (529,000 poultry) within 10 km of the quarantine zone.

The outbreak of highly pathogenic AI in North Gyeongsang Province occurred on October 19 at a farm in Yecheon, a duck raised to lay eggs. About 9,500 ducks were slaughtered on this farm.

Three days later, on October 22, the H5N1 type, a highly pathogenic AI, was also confirmed at the Yecheon Broiler Breeder (a farmhouse that raises edible chickens). This farm is about 1.1 km away from the duck farm. At the broiler breeder farm, 32,000 chickens were culled.

Farmers are trembling with anxiety as suspected cases of highly pathogenic AI come out again.

There are 339 farms in North Gyeongsang Province that raise more than 3,000 chickens. These farms raise 25 million animals. It is the second highest level after Jeonbuk, Gyeonggi, and Chungnam.

Mr. A, a farmer who raises chickens in North Gyeongsang Province, said, “If you get AI, it will take at least a month for re-entry (the process of raising chicks again).” I can't help but worry,” he said.

Since last October, 48 cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza have occurred in poultry farms and 92 cases in wild birds nationwide. AI is a virus prevalent in winter, and in Korea, the special quarantine period is from October to February of the following year.

An official from Gyeongsangbuk-do said, “The first response team of the Livestock Hygiene Prevention Headquarters is immediately dispatched to the scene to completely control access to people and vehicles,” and “we will do our best in quarantine.”
