Senegal recorded its first Ebola case

This is confirmed Senegal recorded its first case of Ebola patient. This is a Guinean national who is on vacation on our soil. He is currently detained at the Department of Infectious Diseases Fann. The Minister of Health, Awa Marie Coll Seck will soon give the details of this unfortunate news.

Haemorrhagic fever could penetrate our borders despite the closure decision. The person is from Guinea. She came on holiday in Senegal, carrying the virus in the baggage. She is currently detained at the Department of Infectious Diseases of Fann.

The government made this assurance that he would play the card of transparency. This, after suspected cases of Fann hospital and that of Ourossogui which proved ultimately negative.

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare will face in a few minutes at the National and International press. The conference room of the Ministry where this writing, is currently overrun by journalists of national and international media.

PressAfrik information held yesterday. Its source at the Fann Hospital is formal. However with the very sensitive nature of the issue, we could not give the information. And yet, we attempted to contact the authorities of the Ministry of Health as the Director of Prevention, Dr. Mamadou Ndiaye El Hadji who is out of the country and the communication cell. But our attempts were unsuccessful, certainly, the news should be announced by the highest authority as Dr. Ka Dayi of the infectious diseases hospital Fann said.

Apparently the Ebola patient was a known (suspect?) patient from Guinea.

      By Fatou Binetou WANE-IGFM | IGFM | Friday, 29 August 2014

A 20 year old native of Guinea Conakry led the Ebola virus in Senegal. The services of the Ministry of Health Guinea Conakry had lost contact with that person. Health Minister Awa Marie Coll Seck told a news conference the young man had turned up for treatment at a hospital in the Senegalese capital Dakar on Tuesday but concealed that he had had close contact with victims in his home country.

She said Guinean authorities said the student from the Guinean capital Conakry had disappeared three weeks ago while under surveillance for having close contact with Ebola victims.

Re: Senegal recorded its first Ebola case - traveler from Guinea

I've read quite a few official posts that someone with Ebola is highly unlikely to travel by plane/other means. They give various reasons for this, none which really make sense to me. It seems to me the primary reason we don't see more of this is due to economic resources of the population. I can think of at least one very important motive for boarding a plane, even when in pain, and that would be in search of a better health care system. At the very least, one that still has capacity to treat you - but ideally one in an advance country.

The model that predicts non-travel just due to the effects of Ebola just doesn't make sense to me.

          Human behavior trumps.

I am curious if this person was already ill when he/she took the trip.

According to the Minister of Health, the young Guinean is a student at a university in Conakry and was gone for three weeks before the teams Guinean epidemiological surveillance inform Senegal. "We're taking back the entire route and revisit all those who have been in contact" with the patient, she has said.

Senegal had yet closed on August 21 its borders with Guinea because of the epidemic, more than three months after it reopened. "This measure is extended to air and sea borders for aircraft and ships from the Republic of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia," had said the Interior Ministry.

"It is not clear how or when the young man came to Senegal, which has closed its border with Guinea. But Seck said that this week an epidemiological surveillance team from Guinea alerted Senegalese authorities that they had lost track of a person who had had contact with the sick. Welcome mac68DC!

Agreed. People will flee this disease. I think most ill people will decide they can tolerate symptoms for the duration of a local or regional plane flight to a better public health environment.

The infected person, a university student from Guinea, sought treatment at a hospital in Senegal's capital, Dakar, on Tuesday but gave no indication he might have Ebola, Health Minister Awa Marie Coll Seck told reporters. The next day, an epidemiological surveillance team in Guinea alerted Senegalese authorities that they had lost track of a person who had had contact with sick people. The team said that the person disappeared three weeks ago and may have come to Senegal.

The student was tracked to the hospital in Dakar that same day and was immediately quarantined, Seck said.

A test has confirmed that he has Ebola, and the World Health Organization has been alerted.

<SMALL>Senegal has announced the first confirmed case in its territory, in Dakar. This is according to the Ministry of Health, an "imported" case from neighboring Guinea-Conakry . The student carrying the virus is currently quarantined at the hospital Fann in Dakar. We do not know the identity of the young man, but you begin to understand his route.

According to the Guinean authorities, the young patient, a student at a university in Conakry, is from For?cariah, on the border with Sierra Leone.

It is a friend, carrying Ebola, that would have contaminated him, explains Colonel Remy Lamah, Guinean Minister of Health: "He had an epidemiological link to a young student who came from Sierra Leone to For?cariah and died shortly after. "

Upon the announcement of the new case with death by Ebola, the health authorities of Guinea had gone on site to secure the funeral and list the relation of the deceased. Among them, a young student who is unaccounted for. "The family declined the identity one of the contacts which unfortunately was not on the premises, said Colonel R?my Lamah. She gave his phone number. Our teams have done everything to join him, but the number was not working. The family were led to believe that he was traveling and did not know where he went. We were not supposed to know he was going to toward Senegal. "

According to the Senegalese Minister of Health, Awa Marie Coll Seck, he arrived in the country three weeks ago in the country. The young man, suffering, reportedly went to a clinic on the outskirts of Dakar, but ahead of his deteriorating health, the young student would have presented himself in consultation Tuesday, August 26 at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the National Hospital of Fann "in an infectious state without bleeding, but concealing the information that he had contact with relatives in Guinea victims of the disease."

The young man had hidden having been in contact with the disease

The minister ensures that the patient - she wanted to keep the identity and the district of residence secret - was immediately quarantined, supported and subjected to sampling. The results of tests carried out at the Pasteur Institute of Dakar were positive.

"The system was strengthened to prevent spread of the disease from this imported case, stressed the Minister of Health at a press conference. Teams have been mobilized to trace the route of the patient, in order to locate all the people who were in touch with him. "

The young man, who had initially hidden have been in contact with infected family members, now show more cooperative, "Now he is diagnosed and managed, he is much more cooperative and gives us all the information needed," said Awa Marie Coll Seck.

There is only one week, Senegal had decided to close its sea, land and air borders with countries affected by the epidemic. The authorities have also announced that new protection kits would be distributed to agents of health facilities.

Senegal Puts 20 People on Watch After First Ebola Case

By Olivier Monnier Aug 30, 2014 1:09 PM ET 0 Comments Email Print

Senegal placed 20 people who were exposed to the nation?s first Ebola case under surveillance, including the patient?s family and medical workers, Minister of Health Awa Marie Coll Seck said.

The 21-year-old college student from Guinea came in a six-passenger vehicle across a land border about three weeks ago, Seck said by phone from Dakar, Senegal?s capital, today. The man no longer has a fever and is expected to recover after being treated with antibiotics and hydration solutions, she said. He got sick after the funeral of a relative who died of the disease.

?Our biggest problem is to manage to track down all the persons he has been in touch with since the signs have appeared,? said Seck, a former director of the United Nations program on HIV and AIDS. ?We don?t want to miss anyone. The most important moment is now.?

Senegal moved quickly to identify the patient?s contacts and limit the impact after the worst-ever outbreak of the viral disease spread to a fifth country. The World Health Organization said this week that $490 million will be needed to contain the epidemic, which has killed almost as many people as all previous outbreaks combined.
