  • 2024 Mpox Global Strongly Suspected/Probable/Confirmed Clade 1b Worksheet

This is a worksheet and not a case list. The intent of this worksheet is to provide some idea of where the most dangerous clade of mpox is occurring/spreading and what the size of the problem is.

As a departure from our usual lists we are incorporating suspected and probable cases if reported by a governmental authority. Lab verification is challenging in this situation. Mpox is easier to clinically diagnose than other viruses.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

August 27, Africa CDC: All clades - As of August 26, 2024 in Africa 22,863 total mpox cases (3,641 confirmed and 19,222 suspected) and 622 deaths. No country or clade breakdown. link

Sources considered but not being used:

WHO Mpox Outbreak Global Trends report dated August 22, 2024 because it spans 2 years (2022-2024) and this list is narrowly focused on the more deadly clade of 1b which has emerged in 2024. link Also, the lab confirmed cases figures used in the WHO report greatly understate the reality on the ground as reported by the African CDC. Mpox, unlike flu, is more easily diagnosed clinically.

Important to understand the #mpox outbreak is complex

    In Africa

-clade Ia and Ib in DRC (most cases are clade Ia and affecting children with clade Ib in South and North Kivu)

    - clade Ib in Burundi, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda
    - clade I in CAR (likely Ia)
    - clade I and II in Cameroon
    - clade IIb in South Africa, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Liberia, Ghana and others Outside Africa
    - 1 case of clade 1b in Sweden
    - 1 case of clade I in Thailand
    - all other countries clade IIb (cause of 2022 global outbreak)

The list in post one is an attempt to get some clarity on the situation since the WHO declared a PHEIC last week. It is a very murky situation as we are having to use case data from largely clinical diagnosis - at least in the DRC. I guess we will see.....

Just wanted to mention that we have not asked for, or received, any grants to provide this information. Like the Wellcome Trust for instance.

All of our data is linked unless it was witnessed in person and is, therefore, a reporting. An example would be personally attending a WHO media event.

We do not ask for $$$. We are independent and do not see digital public health communication as an opportunity to make some cash.

          Thank you for following!

                As of August 25, 2024

                (my bolding)

Our list above is actually more current. i.e. There are now 4 total cases in Kenya, but the WHO chart is very informative anyway.

                @KrutikaKuppalli

Check out this excellent chart from @WHO
on confirmed #mpox cases across #Africa by clade & subclade.

Clade Ia: DRC, CAR, Congo, Cameroon, Gabon, Sudan

Clade Ib: DRC, Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda

Clade IIa & b: Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, South Africa, Liberia, Cameroon, Morocco, Benin, Egypt, Ghana, Mozambique

Limited testing capacity means the true number of cases are much higher. #MPoxAwareness #Mpox2024
