Ministry of Public Health: Clarification on a suspected case of Mpox disease

The results of the tests were negative.

By Eric Sabumukama 2024-07-22 - Health

Following the information that was broadcast on the national radio, on the Facebook page of Isanganiro radio and television and that has been shared through WhatsApp groups since July 16, 2024, on a suspected case of Mpox disease, also called "monkey pox", the Minister of Public Health and the Fight against AIDS, Lydwine Baradahana, released a clarification statement on Thursday, July 18, 2024. In this statement, she specified that after analysis of the samples by the National Reference Laboratory of the INSP, the results were revealed to be negative for MPox.

In this press release, Minister Baradahana explains that it is a 9-year-old girl who was consulted on July 7, 2024, at the Muramba clinic in Mugamba commune of Bururi province for generalized rashes, a cough, a fever of 40 degrees Celsius. Unfortunately, this girl died the next day, July 8, 2024. The same symptoms were observed in two other members of her family. Two other suspected cases were reported at the Kamenge military hospital and the police hospital in Bujumbura town hall and are under medical monitoring.

After learning of this information, the Ministry of Public Health and the Fight against AIDS quickly dispatched multidisciplinary teams, with the support of WHO, to conduct in-depth investigations and take samples for laboratory analysis. A total of 5 people were sampled. After analysis of the samples by the National Reference Laboratory of the INSP, she said, the results were negative for Mpox. As things stand, the investigation teams are busy carrying out differential diagnostic tests to eliminate other pathologies such as chickenpox, measles, herpes, syphilis and drug allergies.

Minister Baradahana urges the population to remain vigilant and to rigorously apply the recommended preventive measures against infectious diseases, especially in the current context where our sub-region is facing a resurgence of epidemic pathology such as Mpox in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mpox: Press briefing in Gitega by the Minister of Public Health and the Fight against AIDS on the rumor of a presumed case of Mpox

    July 19, 2024 Evelyne NDUWIMANA

On July 18, 2024, the Minister of Public Health and the Fight against AIDS, Dr. Lydwine BARADAHANA, provided an update regarding the information that has been disseminated on certain media and shared through WhatsApp groups, since July 17, on a suspected case of monkeypox disease (Mpox) in Mugamba commune in the Province of Bururi.

Minister Dr Lydwine BARADAHANA said that after learning this information, the Ministry of Public Health and the Fight against AIDS, with the support of WHO in Burundi, sent teams to the field to investigate and take samples.

After analysis by the National Reference Laboratory of the INSP of samples taken from 5 suspected cases (1 at the CDS Vyuya of Mugamba, 2 at the hospital of Ijenda, 1 at the Military hospital of Kamenge and 1 at the Police hospital), the results came back negative.

It is on the basis of these results that the Minister of Public Health and the Fight against AIDS, Dr. Lydwine BARADAHANA, provisionally announced that the cause of death of the presumed case was not linked to Mpox. The samples were sent to Uganda to a specialized laboratory to eliminate any other type of Mpox not detectable by the kit used in Burundi.

      Monkeypox hits hard

      02/08/2024 Leandre Sikuyavuga

The monkeypox epidemic, also called monkeypox or Mpox, is currently raging. Cases have already been reported, with 22 cases recorded as of Thursday, August 1 , according to the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health. This epidemic is national in scope, scattered in several localities of the country, with a concentration in Bujumbura City. Images of people suffering from this viral disease are circulating on social networks, causing uncertainty, fear and anxiety. The Ministry of Health has issued press releases on the symptoms of the epidemic and the precautionary measures to be taken, including regular hand washing with soap and water or with a hydroalcoholic solution, avoiding contact with people showing signs of monkeypox.

However, the reliability of communication on this issue is being questioned and authorities are being criticised for a lack of responsiveness, leading to the spread of rumours and misinformation. The population seems to underestimate the seriousness of this highly contagious and deadly epidemic, which is spreading rapidly. For example, the disease is present in 25 of the 26 provinces of the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

The lack of effective measures for the prevention and control of infection is worrying, with widespread non-compliance with barrier gestures and basic hygiene rules such as hand washing and limiting contacts. Testing, containment and quarantine centers are also lacking. Compared to the management of the Covid-19 pandemic, where significant efforts have been made, including the provision of soap at a reduced price, the development of mass testing sites in Bujumbura and in the interior of the country, the establishment of a call center for the early investigation of alerts and increased awareness, it is urgent to learn lessons to act quickly in this situation.

In conclusion, the disease exists and it is really here. It is imperative that public authorities, health partners, civil society, religious denominations and the media join forces to raise awareness and take effective measures to stem this monkeypox epidemic.

Mpox: 171 cases recorded in Burundi

                        AFP / August 22, 2024 at 3:38 p.m., updated at 3:42 p.m.

Burundi has recorded 171 confirmed cases of the mpox virus, the health ministry announced on Thursday, after the first cases were discovered last month in the African Great Lakes country.

"Until yesterday evening (Wednesday), we already had a cumulative total of 171 confirmed positive cases, including 137 still active in at least 26 of the 49 health districts in our country," a ministry spokesman, Polycarpe Ndayikeza, told AFP. "So far, there have been no deaths from mpox in Burundi," he added.

At the end of July, Burundi announced that it had recorded three first cases of MPOX. On August 18, the authorities reported 153 confirmed cases.

A health ministry official told AFP that "the new variant" of the virus currently spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is also the one spreading in Burundi.

In parallel with a resurgence of MPOX cases in Africa, a new, more transmissible and more deadly variant, clade 1b, emerged in September in the DRC.

The resurgence of MPOX in the DRC, driven by this new variant - which has also appeared in other East African countries, Sweden and Asia - prompted the WHO to declare a public health emergency of international concern on August 14, the highest level of health alert.

MPOX is a viral disease that spreads from animals to humans but is also transmitted through close physical contact. The disease causes fever, muscle aches and skin lesions.

Burundi has confirmed 171 cases of mpox, the health minister said on Thursday, following confirmation of the first cases in the country last month.

Formerly known as monkeypox, mpox is an infectious disease caused by a virus transmitted to humans by infected animals that can also be passed from human to human through close physical contact.

"We already had a cumulative of 171 confirmed positive cases, 137 of which are still active," Health Minister Polycarpe Ndayikeza told AFP.

"So far there have been no deaths from mpox in Burundi," he added.

Three cases of mpox were detected in Burundi in late July, with the health ministry reporting 153 confirmed cases on August 18.

"The epidemic continues to gain ground," the ministry said last month, adding it was in the process of creating isolation wards in district hospitals to care for mpox patients.

An official told AFP the cases detected appeared to be the "new variant" spreading in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo...
