Following the information that was broadcast on the national radio, on the Facebook page of Isanganiro radio and television and that has been shared through WhatsApp groups since July 16, 2024, on a suspected case of Mpox disease, also called "monkey pox", the Minister of Public Health and the Fight against AIDS, Lydwine Baradahana, released a clarification statement on Thursday, July 18, 2024. In this statement, she specified that after analysis of the samples by the National Reference Laboratory of the INSP, the results were revealed to be negative for MPox.
In this press release, Minister Baradahana explains that it is a 9-year-old girl who was consulted on July 7, 2024, at the Muramba clinic in Mugamba commune of Bururi province for generalized rashes, a cough, a fever of 40 degrees Celsius. Unfortunately, this girl died the next day, July 8, 2024. The same symptoms were observed in two other members of her family. Two other suspected cases were reported at the Kamenge military hospital and the police hospital in Bujumbura town hall and are under medical monitoring.
After learning of this information, the Ministry of Public Health and the Fight against AIDS quickly dispatched multidisciplinary teams, with the support of WHO, to conduct in-depth investigations and take samples for laboratory analysis. A total of 5 people were sampled. After analysis of the samples by the National Reference Laboratory of the INSP, she said, the results were negative for Mpox. As things stand, the investigation teams are busy carrying out differential diagnostic tests to eliminate other pathologies such as chickenpox, measles, herpes, syphilis and drug allergies.
Minister Baradahana urges the population to remain vigilant and to rigorously apply the recommended preventive measures against infectious diseases, especially in the current context where our sub-region is facing a resurgence of epidemic pathology such as Mpox in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
