More than five dozen residents of Pleasant View Nursing Home in Mount Airy, Maryland, have tested positive for coronavirus, according to health officials there.

Eleven of the residents are hospitalized. One resident with the virus, a man who was in his 90s and had underlying health conditions, died Saturday night, Carroll County Health Officer Ed Singer said during a news conference Sunday.

Singer said the facility, with 104 beds, reported two positive cases on March 27. The next day, the case count had risen to 66.

"Pleasant View Mt. Airy had previously implemented multiple prevention measures according to state and federal guidance," but the virus spread rapidly regardless, according to the Carroll County Health Department.

Nursing and rest homes across the country, which house some of those most vulnerable to suffer severe COVID-19 complications, are becoming hot spots for the virus. Many of the facilities are on lockdown, allowing only staff and residents inside, to try to slow the spread, leaving loved ones to worry from afar.

A nursing home in Kirkland, Washington, was the site of the first major U.S. coronavirus cluster, and since then nursing homes, assisted care facilities and other places that house the elderly and sick have faced similar outbreaks.

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 147 nursing homes in 27 states had patients with COVID-19, and the problem has only worsened since. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the virus spreading "like fire through dry grass" in such facilities.

"I don't think it's extremely unusual to see something like this, when it's unknown, to spread through a nursing home in this way," Singer said of the Maryland outbreak. He added that Pleasant View Nursing Home was continuing to comply with infection control guidance, and all staff was wearing personal protective equipment since some of the residents who tested positive were asymptomatic.

And "multiple state agencies are on the scene and working closely with the local health department and the facility as they take u...https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...ports-n1171921

10 nursing homes in Colorado have coronavirus outbreaks

State health officials announced outbreaks at five facilities on March 22, but declined to identify them or say how many residents and staff members had tested positive for COVID-19. The state is still not saying how may positive tests are tied to the care centers.

Six residents and one staff member at the Inglenook At Brighton facility in Adams County have tested positive, said Ralph Borrego, the facility’s director of nursing. All residents are isolated in the memory care unit and are recovering well, he said Saturday.

“They are all up, no fevers for past four to five days, eating, drinking and exercising,” Borrego said, adding that none of the residents in the independent and assisted living section of the facility have displayed any symptoms. “It is 100% contained within that unit.”

The staff member has been isolated at home....https://apnews.com/7b518d4424a72e2907870cc738fe2cbb

At least 6 Alabama nursing homes have coronavirus patients, report says

Alabama has reported at least eight patients spread across six nursing homes who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, according to a Saturday report.

The numbers represented a startling jump from just two weeks ago when the state’s nursing homes reported zero cases. Among the coronavirus patients were one employee and two nurses, al.com reported.....NHS Management, the company running South Haven Health and Rehabilitation in Hoover, outside Birmingham, announced in a statement that residents who received care from the infected nurses were being tested, and no residents have been “infected with the virus at this time.”

At another facility operated by the company, a resident tested positive for the virus after exhibiting flu-like symptoms last week, al.com reported.

RICHMOND, Va. -- The health director for Richmond and Henrico has identified three new COVID-19 clusters at area nursing homes.

Dr. Danny Avula, the health director for the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts, said there are three COVID-19 cases at Beth Sholom Rehabilitation and three positive cases at the Masonic Home in eastern Henrico.

The director said the health department is working with the staff at both facilities to help slow transmission to other patients.

Officials declined to name the third facility with new COVID-19 cases.

Canterbury Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, where eight residents have died of COVID-19-related illnesses, is seeing the largest outbreak in Central Virginia. Thirty-seven other residents as well as six staffers have tested positive for the virus.

However, Avula said Sunday infection prevention protocols put in place by the medical staff at the facility appear to be working....https://www.wtvr.com/news/coronaviru...ing-facilities

A Tucson nursing home and rehab center has reported 27 confirmed coronavirus cases among its staff and patients. Sapphire of Tucson, on the South Side, announced the test results Monday morning.

The facility, just south of Banner UMC South — the former Kino Hospital — has 24 residents and 3 staffers who tested positive for the virus, company representatives said.

"As soon as the first patient showed symptoms, we were immediately in touch with the Pima County Department of Health," the company said in a news release.

"The source of the infection is unclear and remains under investigation," the company said.

There are 187 reported confirmed cases of COVID-19 patients in Pima County, among 1,157 in Arizona. 6 have died here, among 20 deaths across the state.

"We continue to collaborate closely with Arizona Department of Health Services and county health officials. We are also in contact multiple times a day with additional health experts in Tucson, ensuring we are taking every possible step to provide the appropriate care to all our residents," said representatives for Sapphire, a 240-bed facility near East Ajo Way and South Country Club Road.

As modern living as we know it is drastically changing during this pandemic, so is assisted living. Already, many of us are facing difficult decisions about whether someone we know should stay in an assisted living facility or be taken out due to the coronavirus crisis. (In Worcester, Mass., the Beaumont Rehabiliation and Skilled Nursing Center nursing home is moving residents to other nursing facilities to make room for recovering COVID-19 patients.) If you're in the position of bringing someone to hunker down with you, is it even a good idea?

Here is our guidance as long-term care and medical experts, speaking partly based on our own experiences:

Recently, Lori Frank's husband asked his 89-year-old mother if she had thought about leaving her assisted living facility and moving in with them. She needs help to get dressed and to walk. The couple has a guest room, b....https://www.rand.org/blog/2020/03/sh...of-a-long.html

Kansas health officials confirm another Life Care Center coronavirus outbreak

At least eight people have contracted the novel coronavirus from an outbreak at a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility in Burlington, a city of less than 3,000 in eastern Kansas.

State health officials said they are studying how the outbreak in Burlington started.
