As the coronavirus spreads in Ecuador, bodies are being left on streets

        QUITO, Ecuador —

The corpses have been overwhelming Guayaquil, a port city of 2.8 million at the epicenter of the coronavirus crisis in Ecuador.

Over the last few days, several were wrapped in plastic and left on the streets. Others have lain unclaimed in hospitals and clinics that have been overwhelmed by infections. The city morgue is full.

The majority of the dead are believed to be victims of the virus, but nobody can say for sure how many. There has been little testing.

The country has confirmed 2,700 infections and 93 deaths — 60 of them in Guayaquil and its immediate surroundings. But municipal officials there said they have recovered at least 400 bodies in recent days....

Mayor Cynthia Viteri, who announced that she has tested positive for the virus, said the national government should be responsible for collecting the corpses.

“They’re leaving them in the villages, they fall in front of hospitals,” she said in a Twitter video message to residents last week. “No one wants to recover them.”

The majority of those whose bodies have been found on the street were probably indigent, said Hector Galarza, a publicist in Guayaquil. “But it is generating panic.”...

Ecuador's government is preparing an emergency burial ground on land donated by a private cemetery in Guayaquil, the country's largest city, to address a shortage of burial plots as the novel coronavirus hits the Andean country hard.

As of Tuesday, the country had 3,995 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 220 deaths, with 182 more deaths suspected of being linked to the virus. The outbreak has sparked a shortage of wooden coffins, prompting some people to bury their relatives in cardboard boxes donated by cemeteries.

Large lines of cars carrying coffins waited outside private cemeteries across the city this week, as families waited for hours for a chance to bury their deceased relatives. The outbreak has overwhelmed hospitals and emergency services, with some families keeping dead bodies in their homes for days.

The government, which last week began storing the bodies of coronavirus victims in giant refrigerated containers until graves were prepared, is aiming to bury some 100 people a day at the cemetery in northern Guayaquil, which has the capacity for some 2,000 plots.

Jorge Wated, who is coordinating the government's response to the handling of the dead, said the government was conducting burials itself and would publish a guide on the internet to ensure relatives knew where their loved ones were buried.

"At the cemetery, they will be buried person by person, without cost to the families," Wated said.

The city of Guayaquil also said it would prepare two public cemeteries with the capacity to handle some 12,000 plots.

President Lenin Moreno said last week that some 3,500 people could die from the coronavirus in Guayas province, home to 68% of the country's cases and where Guayaquil is located.

Among the dead so far have been seven nurses, according to the Guayas College of Nurses, which added that some 147 nurses had been infected and 120 had resigned for fear of contagion.

                        April 8, 2020 11:12 AM National COE registers 4 450 covid-19 infections and 242 confirmed deaths related to covid-19

The National Emergency Operations Committee (COE) registers a total of 4,450 confirmed infections by covid-19 in Ecuador this Wednesday, April 8, 2020.

Mar?a Paula Romo, Minister of the Interior, indicated that 3 741 people are stable and complying with home isolation, 178 are stable hospitalized and 146 hospitalized with reserved prognosis of the total of 4 450 infected people. There are 242 deceased people of this group of people and 140 have been discharged from hospital.

The Government Minister indicated that there are 240 people who died probably with covid-19.

Romo added that citizens are going to see the curve with a figure of the day when the people's symptoms began. The capacity to test in the country has tripled, of the dammed results, 15 526 samples have been taken, he assured.

A single curve is made with the contagion report, because there is still a lag in the data, he said.

In one more week, the two isolation periods of 14 days each will be completed. In Ecuador next week, the isolation measures will be held for 28 days. Romo assured that the isolation will be extended with rigorous measures in many of the provinces, in all at first, but after evaluating city by city and province by province, to know in which activities the measures can be relaxed, for this It will create a traffic light to know which activities can or cannot be resumed. I mean

In Quito and Pichincha, the isolation is most likely to spread because it has gradually become the second province with the highest number of cases.

The Government has an artificial tool that allows, through the GPS of the phones, to know if the people who tested positive for covid-19 mobilized. It has been documented to send to the Prosecutor's Office and follow a judicial process for disobeying the order and putting the lives of Ecuadorians at risk. The penalty is up to three years in prison.

The collection of fines, for not complying with the traffic ban, will be through payments to basic services, Romo said.

Minister Mar?a Paula Romo said that if within 24 hours no member of the family has expressed the will to take care of the burial or cremation of a person who died by covid 19, at that time the State takes over.

Ba?os de Agua Santa is not without security. The National Police is guaranteeing security. The minister assured that the uniformed are responding to emergency calls and patrolling. The National Police Training School is not being used, he said.

People who have moved to other countries have to cover their return expenses. Humanitarian flights are maintained in a slow way, according to the calendar, where travelers are considered to be abandoned in isolation, in order to receive others.

Ecuador registered 315 deaths and 7,257 coronavirus infections
It is the Latin American country with the highest number of deaths from Covid-19 in proportion to its population as a result of poor crisis management.
                              April 11, 2020

Ecuador, one of the Latin American countries most affected by the coronavirus, registered this Saturday 315 deaths, with 7,257 positive cases of infection and 411 patients with hospital discharge after having passed the quarantine, reported the Minister of Government (Interior), Mar?a Paula Blunt.

Saturday's data confirms it again as the Latin American country with the highest number of deaths from Covid-19 in proportion to its population, revealing poor management of the drama from the start.

The official added that there are other 338 cases considered as "probable deceased of COVID-19", which until now has not been able to specify the cause of the deaths.

In addition, Romo indicated that 6,944 people, of the 22,649 diagnostic samples taken since March 29, have been discarded for the disease.

The minister specified that of the positive cases for the coronavirus, 6,123 are stable and quarantined in their homes, 186 in hospitals in stable conditions and 184 in intensive care units with a reserved prognosis.

The Emergency Operations Committee (COE), which integrates the authorities in charge of directing the actions to face the health emergency due to the coronavirus, reported that the province of Guayas, whose capital is Guayaquil, is the most affected by the pandemic in the country with 5,290 cases.

Guayas is followed by the province of Pichincha (whose capital is Quito) with 606 positive cases, Los R?os (227), Manab? (204), Azuay (154) and El Oro (149), among which more than one hundred patients.

Minister Romo recalled that this weekend a total restriction will be applied to the movement of vehicles, although transportation related to the health, processing and provision of food and medicine, and security sectors is excepted.

Ecuador reported its first positive case of coronavirus on February 29, on March 11 declared a "health emergency" throughout the country and five days later the Government ordered a State of Exception, with measures that limit vehicle traffic, the commercial and labor activity.

However, while a presumably strict protocol was applied, hundreds of people from all over the world entered Guayaquil. None of the travelers was controlled by the health and safety authorities.

In addition, Guayaquil is a dynamic port to which Ecuadorians of all conditions migrated, it is the engine of the private economy and reflects the complexities and inequities of Ecuador. In the heart of the city is one of the largest informal shopping centers in South America, selling all kinds of Chinese products, in warehouses run by citizens of that country: it was undoubtedly the center of expansion of the epidemic.

All in all, the country is currently undergoing massive and compulsory home isolation, as well as a fifteen-hour curfew per day, with the aim of preventing the spread of the coronavirus spread.
