Kolkata, Apr 30 (IBNS): Two days after a four-year-old child died due to swine flu in a Kolkata hospital, officials on Sunday confirmed one more death of a young housewife due to swine flu at a privately-run hospital in the city.


Seema Ghosh, a nearly 28-year-old woman from Kalyani in West Bengal's Nadia district, had fallen sick on Apr 16 and died of swine flue at AMRI hospital in Kolkata's Salt Lake area on Saturday night.

Earlier on Friday (Apr 28), Suhana Ghosh, a minor from the same district, was declared dead due to H1N1 influenza at Mukundapur AMRI hospital.

Doctors said that both were tested positive for swine flue (H1N1 virus).

[h=1]H1N1 claims first victim in Kolkata this year; toll rises to 3 in West Bengal[/h]
KOLKATA: Swine flu took the first life in Kolkata this year on Friday. A 56-year-old man died in Woodlands Nursing Home in Alipore, less than a week after another patient succumbed to H1N1 last Saturday.

While deceased Arup Haldar was from Kolkata, the other two swine flu victims this year were from Nadia's Kalyani and Taherpur, respectively.

Haldar was brought to Woodlands on Wednesday. According to hospital sources, he was critical by the time he was wheeled in. Along with shortness of breath, Haldar was admitted with bouts of vomiting, loose motions and coughing.

"The patient was a diabetic and was on insulin. His condition kept deteriorating and he was put on ventilation and haemodialysis support within hours of admission," said a source in Woodlands.

Suspecting a case of H1N1 infection, the hospital sent her swab sample, which tested positive to the virus.Doctors said treating her was more difficult as he was already a patient with cardiac ailment.Last Friday a 56-year-old H1N1-positive man died at Woodlands Nursing Home.Even though the state health department has tried to downplay the current swine flu scenario, H1N1 has already claimed four lives in less than two months.

Swine flu claims infant, dad stops vandalism

KOLKATA: When Aradhya Dhanuk lost her battle to swine flu early on Saturday, the world fell apart for the 18-month-old's parents. Emotions ran high as relatives started arriving at the Institute of Child Health (ICH). Few among them even tried to create a ruckus. But the father of the child appealed to them to maintain peace.

The toddler was admitted at ICH on May 16 with symptoms of H1N1. Swine flu was confirmed three days after the admission. Due to severe respiratory distress, the infant was put on ventilation. According to doctors involved in treating the child, Aradhya also came with pneumothorax, a condition in which there is abnormal collection of air in the pleural space that causes uncoupling of the lungs from the chest wall. The baby never came out of ventilation. Later, she developed septicemia and septic shock caused her death around 1.30am on Saturday.

KALYANI: A former officer of Kalyani's Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Ram Krishna Roy (65) died of swine flu at a city hospital on Sunday afternoon. Roy was undergoing treatment for the past 14 days. He was a resident of B Block in Kalyani. With the death of Roy , the swine flu death toll in state rises to six.
