Thiruvananthapuram:
The district administration has drawn up an intensive clean up drive at Vizhinjam, one of the coastal areas where chikungunya has reared its ugly head.
Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans will lead the effort in the first phase of the programme, which begins on Tuesday.
A meeting convened by District Collector N. Ayyappan at Vizhinjam on Saturday finalised the details of the programme. As many as 500 CRPF jawans will join the drive which begins at 8 a.m.
They will be joined by social workers and non-Government organisations. The volunteers would be grouped into teams.
The first phase of the programme will cover 11 coastal wards, including Karimballikara, Chanthamukku and Kurissadi.
While the CRPF jawans would bring their cleaning equipment, the Christian diocese and Jama 'ath will provide additional tools. The district administration has also arranged for tipper lorries and excavators.
The solid waste collected from the coastal areas would be transported to the City Corporation's garbage treatment plant at Vilappilsala.
