Thiruvananthapuram:
The district administration has drawn up an intensive clean up drive at Vizhinjam, one of the coastal areas where chikungunya has reared its ugly head.

Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans will lead the effort in the first phase of the programme, which begins on Tuesday.

A meeting convened by District Collector N. Ayyappan at Vizhinjam on Saturday finalised the details of the programme. As many as 500 CRPF jawans will join the drive which begins at 8 a.m.

They will be joined by social workers and non-Government organisations. The volunteers would be grouped into teams.

The first phase of the programme will cover 11 coastal wards, including Karimballikara, Chanthamukku and Kurissadi.

While the CRPF jawans would bring their cleaning equipment, the Christian diocese and Jama 'ath will provide additional tools. The district administration has also arranged for tipper lorries and excavators.

The solid waste collected from the coastal areas would be transported to the City Corporation's garbage treatment plant at Vilappilsala.

<SMALL>The coastal region of Vizhinjam, reeling under the Chikungunya epidemic, was subjected to a massive cleaning drive on Tuesday assisted by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

As many as 600 jawans from the CRPF training centre at Pallipuram were pressed into service for the cleaning drive which focused on 13 areas in and around Vizhinjam.

The one-day drive, perhaps the first of its kind here after Vizhinjam fell prey to Chikungunya, was organised jointly by the City Corporation, Vizhinjam grama panchayat, Neyyattinkara taluk office, the local Jama-a?th and Church parishes, the CRPF and the Harbour Engineering Department.

The drive, which began at 8 a m and continued till evening, focused on areas such as Vizhinjam Harbour, No-man?s Land, Pallithara, Valiyaparambu, Kottapuram, Pattani Colony and Godavarma Road. The garbage was dumped in pits, but plastic waste was carted off to Vilappilsala.

Much of Vizhinjam, though thickly populated, lacks basic sanitation and the inhabitants of several colonies here live in squalor and unhealthy conditions. At present, there is little or no way to dispose of the tonnes of waste generated in the region. The Vizhinjam grama panchayat lacks the basic infrastructure to deal with the problem.

George Mercier MLA formally inaugurated the cleaning drive.
